Abstract

This study aims to describe the effect of the lottery card method on student learning outcomes in acid-base solution material during video-assisted discovery learning. This study used a pre-test and post-test control group design. The study population consisted of all 247 ninth-grade students at SMA Negeri 5 Palu, across eight classes.  Two classes were selected as samples, namely class XI Merdeka 5 (control) and class XI Merdeka 6 (experimental), each with the same number of 34 students, using simple random sampling. Data were collected using pre-tests and post-tests. The control class used only the discovery learning model, while the experimental class used the lottery card method in video-assisted discovery learning. From the analysis results, the N-ngai score for the control class was 0.49, and for the experimental class was 0.67, both of which were classified as moderate. Although both were moderate, the N-ngai score for the experimental class was higher than that for the control class. The t-test results showed a significance value of 0.001, which is less than 0.05, so it can be concluded that Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. Therefore, it can be said that the lottery card method in discovery learning assisted by video media has an effect on student learning outcomes in acid-base solution material.

Abstract

Acid-base material is often considered difficult for students because it is abstract, leading to misconceptions and poor learning outcomes. The ability to ask questions reflects cognitive engagement and is closely related to the critical thinking required to understand abstract concepts. Therefore, it is important to examine this skill to obtain evidence of its role in improving chemistry learning outcomes and as a consideration for teachers in determining the appropriate learning process. This study aims to analyze students' questioning skills and critical thinking abilities in acid-base learning and examine the relationship between these skills and students' learning outcomes. A quantitative descriptive approach was employed and conducted at SMAN 1 Dampal Utara. The research subjects comprised 30 students, including 17 females and 13 males. Male students. The sample was selected using a purposive sampling technique. The instruments used for data collection included the questioning skills test and the critical thinking skills test. The results indicated that students’ questioning skills were categorized as moderate with a percentage of 57.5 %, similarly, their critical thinking abilities also fell into the mild category with a rate of 48.33 %. Correlation analysis revealed a significant relationship between questioning skills and learning outcomes (r= 0.386;α=0.035). Meanwhile, the relationship between critical thinking and learning outcomes was shown to be insignificant (r= 0.225;α= 0.173). These findings suggest that questioning skills can contribute to optimal learning outcomes.

Abstract

The phenomenon of environmental damage due to unlicensed gold mining activities harms aquatic ecosystems. Mercury (Hg) waste from the mining process has the potential to cause bioaccumulation in aquatic biota such as fish and crabs, which can lead to mercury contamination in the human body through the food chain. The bioaccumulation process can also produce toxic organic compounds that harm human health. Therefore, this research aims to determine whether mercury bioaccumulation occurs in yuyu crabs in the Janja River, Malomba Village, Dondo District, Tolitoli Regency, due to gold mining activities. The method used in the research is the calibration curve method with Cold Vapor Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (CV-AAS) analysis at a wavelength of 253.7 nm. The results obtained from this research indicate that bioaccumulation has occurred in yuyu crabs that live in the Janja River. The highest accumulated mercury metal levels were obtained at upstream locations with an average of 5.24 ppb; the lowest was in the midstream, which is 1.53 ppb. At the downstream location, it has a mercury concentration of 4.53 ppb. So it shows that the mercury contamination in the yuyu crab samples is below the quality standard threshold, Indonesian National Standard No. 7387 of 2009, for the heavy metal mercury in other types of crabs and crustaceans is 1.0 ppm or 1000 ppb.

Abstract

The study aims to utilize waste from manga fruit, especially seed shells, as raw material for chromium metal adsorbents in water. Utilizing this waste is one way to support the principle of zero waste for agricultural and plantation products. The biochar preparation process is carried out by pyrolysis, namely, burning in the absence of oxygen. To determine the adsorption capacity of biochar from mango seed shells for chromium ions, analysis was carried out by varying the biochar weight and chromium concentration. The results showed that at carbonisation temperatures of 350 oC, 400 oC, and 450 oC, the water content was 7.5 %, 6.4 %, and 6.2 %, respectively, while the ash content was 6.3 %, 5.9 %, and 5 %, respectively. 6 % respectively. The optimum biochar weight was determined using 20 mg, 40 mg, 60 mg, 80 mg, and 100 mg of biochar. In contrast, the optimum concentration was determined using biochar concentrations of 20 ppm, 40 ppm, 60 ppm, 80 ppm, and 100 ppm. The research results showed that the optimal weight of mango seed shell biochar at a biochar temperature of 450 °C was 100 mg, with a chromium absorption percentage of 92.96%. Meanwhile, the optimum concentration is 20 ppm across all biochars, with chromium absorption of 92.05% for the 450 °C biochar. Manga seed shells have economic value and environmental remediation applications, as they can be converted into adsorbents for chromium metal.

Abstract

Anthocyanin-containing plants have potential as environmentally friendly natural acid–base indicators. However, information regarding the suitability of Ruellia tuberosa L. flower extract as a titration indicator remains limited. The aim of this study was to explore the potential of purple trumpet flower extract (Ruellia tuberosa L.) as an alternative acid-base titration indicator. The method used for flower extraction was stepwise maceration with n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and 70% ethanol. The extract was tested for anthocyanin content, color response in buffer solutions at pH 1–14, and performance in strong acid–strong base, weak acid–strong base, and weak base–strong acid titrations. The extract exhibited red at pH 1–3, pink at pH 4–5, colorless at pH 6–8, green at pH 9–12, and yellow at pH 13–14. Endpoint detection was comparable to phenolphthalein and methyl orange, with only slight differences in endpoint pH values. Purple trumpet flower extract shows potential as a natural acid-base indicator and may serve as an alternative for educational and laboratory applications, although further research on stability and quantitative anthocyanin content is still needed.
