Abstract

In order to better equip teachers for the profession, this research looks at the difficulties encountered by those who take part in Indonesia's Teacher Professional Education Program (PPG). The purpose of this research is to learn about the difficulties encountered by PPG members and the strategies they used to overcome them. A qualitative technique is utilized in this study's methodology. Ten teachers who had finished the PPG program at Ganesha University of Education in 2020 were involved in this research. In this study, internet interviews served as the data collection tool. There were five steps to the data processing process in this study: reading, transcribing, highlighting, keywords, and categorization. Problems with technology adoption and insufficient technical knowledge were identified as difficulties experienced by PPG members in this survey. not having a complete grasp of software expertise, being confused when selecting assessment tools, and having trouble creating lesson plans. Participants work on their problem-solving skills by studying on their own or using the YouTube app. The study's findings suggest that participants might utilize their experiences with the obstacles they faced to better prepare for the future of technology in online education.

Abstract

This study addressed the gap of research on the innovative learning medium Wordwall for working adult learners by investigating the perceptions of students of Apollonia Hotel School in Denpasar, Indonesia, regarding how well Wordwall helps in increasing their English vocabulary during online learning. The method used by the researcher was qualitative. Data were collected from 10 respondents who had been selected with qualifications of activeness while studying, and always participated during the process. Data obtained from short questionnaire distributed through Google Form, then analysed using a qualitative descriptive model according to Creswell, (2012). From the data analysis, the researcher found that the students had high enthusiasm in learning vocabulary through the Wordwall application. This application provides various types of creative and interactive vocabulary games. The disadvantage is that this application does not provide a place to explain explanations for students' answers, both right and wrong. Students have the opportunity to learn about context and changes to sentences in games. Based on this analysis, it proves that Wordwall is an effective learning media to help increase students' vocabulary as a future career opportunity. In addition, Wordwall is also effectively used during online learning to provide interesting vocabulary questions. From this study, it is suggested for hospitality lecturers to use Wordwall application because it can help students to be more motivated to learn English vocabulary.

Abstract

English for arts and design is a vocational English developed to facilitate non-English students, studying visual design communication. The goal of the course is to enable the students to use English and communicate effectively in the context of visual design business. To achieve this learning goal, the lecturer should design a meaningful and effective course design.  Among various approaches to ESP course design, this article describes the text-based approach. Because the students are from a non-English department, this strategy will help them learn English more effectively. When the lecturer uses this approach, they provide students with sufficient scaffolding. These scaffolding are useful for assisting students to gain confidence in using English. Gradually, their learning goals can be achieved effectively.  Thus, this article aims to describe how to design an effective ESP course for Visual Design Communication students and report its implementation in the classroom. This paper will hopefully provide some practical insights in designing ESP courses and in using text-based approach  in ESP classrooms.

The majority of ESL/EFL students is that writing is challenging and frustrating. Limited vocabulary and low idea gathering appears to be most difficult issues in writing process. This research was quasi-experimental, with a control group that was only used for the post-test. This research aims to analyses the effectiveness of infographics as instructional media on students' writing proficiency. Two classes totalling 64 students made up the sample, which was drawn using random cluster sampling. A writing test served as the research instrument. An independent t-test was used to assess the data. The findings indicated that the experimental group's students were more proficient writers. The experimental group did better than the control group in terms of means (85.97 > 83.48) and the t-test results (3.126 > 3.125). In comparison to the conventional instruction, it was shown that using infographics as instructional media had a substantial impact on students writing proficiency. The effect size computation yielded a result of 0.78, which was examined in the Cohen's d table. Abstract

This study has the purpose to explore the politeness strategies of students in a vocational school, how the teachers and students apply the politeness strategies, and the implication of politeness strategies applied to the student’s good character improvement. Descriptive qualitative research was applied in this study which explored the phenomena of politeness in the teaching-learning process. There were 16 classes which consisted of 464 students of XI grade in one of the vocational schools in Buleleng Bali as the participants of this research. 140 students from the hospitality department and  10 teachers were taken as samples for this study. The sources of the primary input were the teachers’ and students’ interactions in the classrooms which were observed and recorded. Ten transcriptions were collected from the observations of ten teachers observed when they taught in the Tourism Department. These transcriptions then were analyzed and reviewed according to Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory in 1987. This research showed that the vocational students applied some types of expressions such as greetings, thanking, addressing, apologizing, and filling. Some expressions or terms were derived from the daily language, which was applied to soften the students’ and teachers’ interactions. All the expressions were grouped into politeness which is positive and negative. The results of this research could be applied as a recommendation for the teachers and students to make the interaction in the classroom effective.
