Abstract

ABSTRACT Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of death among women in Indonesia, with low levels of knowledge and limited early detection behaviors among adolescent girls identified as important risk factors that require early intervention. This community service activity aimed to improve the knowledge, awareness, and skills of adolescent girls in Meranjat Village regarding early breast cancer prevention using the Breast Health application as a digital educational medium. The program integrates health education with application-based technology as an innovative strategy to enhance preventive behaviors, particularly in rural or semi-peripheral areas where such approaches are still limited. The implementation included health education sessions on breast cancer, demonstrations of breast self-examination techniques (SADARI), installation and training on the use of the Breast Health application, and ongoing assistance in utilizing its educational and reminder features. Evaluation was conducted using a pre-test and post-test design to measure knowledge improvement, along with monitoring participant engagement with the application. The results showed a significant increase in knowledge about early detection of breast cancer, improved ability to perform SADARI correctly and independently, and a high level of acceptance and satisfaction with the use of the application as a learning tool. In conclusion, this program proved effective in enhancing awareness, knowledge, and early detection practices among adolescent girls, with the Breast Health application offering a practical, accessible, and sustainable technology-based educational approach that can be recommended as an innovative model for community-level breast cancer prevention efforts. Keywords: Adolescent Girls, Breast Cancer, Early Detection, Health Education.

Abstract

Exclusive breastfeeding during the first 6 months of life is essential for infant health, yet coverage remains low worldwide. The International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes (BMS Code) was developed to protect breastfeeding from inappropriate formula promotion. This study aimed to examine the effect of education about the BMS Code on breastfeeding mothers’ knowledge and self-efficacy. A one-group pretest–posttest design was conducted among 88 breastfeeding mothers selected through purposive sampling in the working area of the Sako Community Health Center, Palembang, Indonesia. Data were collected using a validated questionnaire with acceptable reliability. Knowledge changes were analyzed using the marginal homogeneity test, while changes in self-efficacy were assessed using the McNemar test. The proportion of mothers with good knowledge increased from 3.4% before the intervention to 52.3% after the intervention. High self-efficacy also increased from 53.4% to 86.4%. Significant improvements were found in both knowledge and self-efficacy after the intervention (p < 0.001). Education on the BMS Code effectively improved breastfeeding mothers’ knowledge and self-efficacy and may help mothers recognize inappropriate formula marketing and make more informed breastfeeding decisions. Future studies should use larger samples, stronger experimental designs, and extend the follow-up period to determine whether the intervention effects can be maintained over time.

Abstract

Background: Good sleep is necessary for adolescents to maintain optimum health and cognitive function. Adolescents have a unique sleep behavior owing to the several hormonal changes they undergo and the variations in the circadian rhythms that regulate the sleep-wake cycle. One method for treating sleep problems in adolescents is ensuring sleep hygiene. We aimed to determine the relationship between sleep hygiene and sleep quality in adolescents aged 12–15 years at Junior High School 1 Indralaya. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional design. Samples were collected from 97 adolescents using the proportionate stratified random sampling technique with questionnaires. The data were analyzed using Chi Square test. Results: There was a significant relationship between sleep hygiene and sleep quality (ρ -value < 0.05). Sleeping is crucial for adolescents to maintain their performance in several activities, including the achievement of optimal learning outcomes. A superior sleep hygiene behavior will improve sleep quality. Conclusion: Provision of health education about sleep hygiene to adolescents by health workers is important for improving the adolescents sleep quality.

Abstract

Introduction: Maternal mortality in Indonesia remains high, and many cases are preventable through improved maternal readiness for childbirth. Family-Centered Maternity Care (FCMC) offers a holistic approach that enhances knowledge, emotional preparedness, and family support during pregnancy, yet studies evaluating its effectiveness remain limited. Objective: This study aims to assess the effect of FCMC on maternal readiness for childbirth. Methods:  A quasi-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design was used involving 77 pregnant women in the working area of Puskesmas Sako Palembang. Participants were recruited using a purposive sampling approach. Maternal readiness was measured before and after a structured FCMC intervention comprising four educational sessions.    Results: The study showed a significant difference in maternal readiness before and after the FCMC intervention. Maternal readiness increased from a mean score of 55.12 at pretest to 81.45 at posttest (p-value <0.0001). Conclusion: FCMC is effective in improving maternal readiness for childbirth. Its implementation may strengthen maternal outcomes by promoting holistic preparation for labor. Further research with more rigorous study designs and broader settings is recommended to support wider adoption of the FCMC model.
