The method used in this study is the descriptive analysis method. The theory used in this study is the theory of New Historicism by Stephen Greenbalt. The results show, there are five historical facts, the establishment of tonarigumi, the creation of the tatemono sokai policy, the air attack on Kure, the attack on the Hiro Naval Base, and the dropping of Atomic Bomb on Hiroshima, which also affected Kure area which is 20 kilometres to southeast Hiroshima. In addition, as a result of the occurrence of World War II, the mindset of the Japanese people regarding war changed from those previously zealous in warfare to preferring to maintain peace. Abstract

This article discusses one of the Japanese mythological creatures in the youkai category, the kappa which is believed to be river guardians. Data is taken from the anthology of Japanese folklore Mangga Nippon Mukashi Banashi 101 edited by Sayumi Kawauchi. Folklore used as the object of research are two titles that were chosen selectively which are "Kasa Uri Ohana" (Ohana the Umbrella Seller) and "Kappa no Amagoi " (Rain Calling Prayer from Kappa). Data were analyzed with Peirce's semiotic trichotomy theory, namely icons, indices and symbols, and literary anthropological theory. This article concluded three things related to the form of a kappa, where they are believed to be present and the status of kappa in the Japanese belief system. Kappa in Japanese mythology resembles a frog's shape but has scales and has a weakness in its skull. Kappa is believed to live in rivers in Japan. Kappa is present and has a special place in Japanese society's trust, evidenced by the existence of kappa temples. Unlike other Japanese youkai, the kappa is believed that before the form of the kappa he was a god whose rank was demoted, therefore it was believed that he could be begged for rain. The existence of kappa, thus, not only has negative attributes but also positive ones.

Abstract

Japan is famous as an advanced manufacturing industrial country as a result of the high rationality in their works, however in daily life Japanese people still highly believe in the existence of Youkai, mythological creatures. This study examined the figures and meanings of Tengu, mythological creatures that are classified as Youkai which one of them is, as described in the Japanese folklore, having long nose and fully-red colored body. The data for this study are the folklore taken from the anthology book Nihon Mukashi Banashi 101 edited by Sayumi Kawauchi (2007). The figures and existence of Tengu in the folklore were practically analyzed using the Peirce's semiotic theory, with the focus on the meaning of icons, indexes, and symbols of Tengu in the folklore and the Japanese belief system. Moreover, this study revealed two figure types of Tengu namely daitengu, is a tengu whose long nose and kotengu whose eagle-like wings. In the Japanese belief system, it is believed that Tengu are mountain guardians, for example the Mount Takao, one of the places which is believed to be a Tengu habitat. Tengu is as well believed to have objects with supernatural powers such as kakuremino (a cloak) and ha uchiwa (a fan). The descriptions in the folklore clearly show that these Tengu actually exist, although the fact in reality is different. Regardless of either the presence or absence of these mythological creatures in the real world, furthermore, the folklore narrative shows that modern Japanese society still has a strong belief in the existence of Tengu. Stories about Tengu along with other mythological creatures continue to be passed on from a generation to another in both oral and written forms that indicates that Japanese people do not ever detach themselves from their old belief system.

Abstract

The development of Indonesian and regional literature in the Archipelago is not only determined by internal conditions but also by external influences. Several years ago in Bali, an anthology of haiku in Balinese was published, which was clearly influenced by the form of haiku, traditional Japanese poetry. This article analyzes Balinese haiku collected in two anthologies, namely Bikul (Mouse, 2014) and Bubu (Fishtrapped, 2015), both by I Ketut Aryawan Kenceng. By applying a qualitative approach, this research data was collected through literature studies and interviews with poets and observers of modern literature in the Balinese language. The data were analyzed using structuralism and semiotic approaches. The results of the study show that Balinese haiku provides a cross-cultural identity (Japanese and Balinese) for modern Balinese literature. The results of this study contribute to our efforts to understand that this hybrid poem strengthens the opinion of scholars who say that Bali is an open fortress, meaning that it remains open to accepting outside influences but firmly maintains its artistic and cultural identity. Keywords: modern Balinese literature, Balinese language, haiku, cross-cultural identity, Japan

The depiction of the form of youkai contained in the Onmyoji Arena game has several things related to the concept of youkai in Japanese beliefs. The depictions seen in the youkai in the Onmyoji Arena game are (1) Youkai Tanuki who is related to sake and the science of shapeshifting. (2) Youkai Zashiki Warashi which is related to luck and house guardian spirits. (3) Youkai Yumekui who likes to eat dreams. (4) Youkai Kiyohime who has a tragic love.
