Abstract

This research examines Mahabharata epic puppet (wayang) comics, created by three renowned comic artists: R. A. Kosasih, Teguh Santosa, and Gun Gun, who respectively have Sundanese, Javanese, and Balinese cultural backgrounds, through the lens of Indonesian identity articulation. The comics of wayang which translates ‘puppet’, are a distinctive genre that employs panels to depict puppetry tales. While being influenced by foreign cultures such as American comic art and the Indian Mahabharata epic, these artists intentionally incorporate Indonesian elements into their works. This is evident from 1955 to the present. This research used a critical qualitative descriptive approach to investigate the articulation of the identity discourse within the cultural realm of comics. The comic works of the artists are analysed through articulation and hegemony theory. The research concludes that the artists’ works establish a cultural connection and relate cultural comic art to Indonesian readers. This not only constructs Indonesian identity but also promotes cultural diversity.

Abstract

The Mahabharata epic is better known to people in Bali, especially in shadow puppet plays. However, since 1955, the Mahabharata epic has been presented in the form of comics. This way of storytelling continued until 2014 with the printing of the Mahabharata epic puppet comic by Gun Gun, which presents Balinese cultural icons. This research aims to describe the representation of Balinese culture in Gun Gun’s Mahabharata epic puppet comic. The research method employed a critical qualitative design. Data collection was conducted through observation, interview, and literature study. The theories utilised are comic theory, hegemony theory, representation theory, and articulation theory. The findings indicate that Gun Gun’s Mahabharata epic puppet comic employs three forms of Balinese cultural representation. The three forms are as follows: (1) visual representation, whereby characters and backgrounds are depicted in comics in a manner that evokes Balinese architecture, including wantilan, pura, and togog; (2) verbal representation, which is evidenced by the presence of Balinese vocabulary in the dialogue of the characters, such as om swastiastu, kerahayuan, yadnya, Hyang Widhi, and darma; and (3) narrative representation, which is evident in the explicit portrayal of Hindu teachings, including karma phala. The dialogue of the characters, such as om swastiastu, kerahayuan, yadnya, Hyang Widhi, and darma, and the narrative representation that shows explicitly the teachings of Hinduism, such as karma phala, are also forms of cultural representation. The study of Balinese cultural representation in the Mahabharata epic comic contributes to the understanding that comics also serve as a medium for the adaptation of external cultural influences, thereby reinforcing Balinese identity. Keywords: Balinese culture, Mahabharata epic, comics, representation, Balinese identity

Abstract

The development of Indonesian and regional literature in the Archipelago is not only determined by internal conditions but also by external influences. Several years ago in Bali, an anthology of haiku in Balinese was published, which was clearly influenced by the form of haiku, traditional Japanese poetry. This article analyzes Balinese haiku collected in two anthologies, namely Bikul (Mouse, 2014) and Bubu (Fishtrapped, 2015), both by I Ketut Aryawan Kenceng. By applying a qualitative approach, this research data was collected through literature studies and interviews with poets and observers of modern literature in the Balinese language. The data were analyzed using structuralism and semiotic approaches. The results of the study show that Balinese haiku provides a cross-cultural identity (Japanese and Balinese) for modern Balinese literature. The results of this study contribute to our efforts to understand that this hybrid poem strengthens the opinion of scholars who say that Bali is an open fortress, meaning that it remains open to accepting outside influences but firmly maintains its artistic and cultural identity. Keywords: modern Balinese literature, Balinese language, haiku, cross-cultural identity, Japan

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the relationship between anime Naruto's text and creative and cultural industries in the creative industry products derived from anime Naruto. The method in this study is an informal method. There are three theories used, namely the storynomics theory proposed by Mckee (2018), the intertextual theory proposed by Kristeva (1980), and the semiotic theory proposed by Barthes (1957). Based on the results of the study, it is found that the word Naruto and Konoha village symbols are widely used in promoting a product. In addition, the psychological influence of the Naruto character affects the audience's interest in buying the product. Intertext also plays an important influence in product creation because the products sold are modified items that appear in the anime. Furthermore, the objects in the anime have existed since ancient times, one of which is hitaiate. In Japanese society, hitaiate is more popularly known as hachimaki. This hachimaki is often used by students, craftsmen and supporters of sports competitions. Abstract

The resistance to patriarchal domination in Japanese and Balinese societies between 1989 and 2019 is reflected in various literary works that portray women's struggles against restrictive social norms. In this vein, this study compares the forms and meanings of resistance depicted in the Japanese novels Out by Natsuo Kirino and Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata with the Balinese novels Tempurung and Kenanga by Oka Rusmini. Using qualitative research with a cultural studies approach, it identifies two shared forms of resistance: rejection of traditional gender roles and struggle for bodily autonomy. Differences appear in the forms, with radical resistance in the Japanese novels and subversive resistance in the Balinese novels, and in the backgrounds, where structural oppression shapes the Japanese texts while traditional customs influence the Balinese texts. Ultimately, these narratives critique both Japanese patriarchy and Balinese customary traditions that constrain women’s identities and choices.
