Abstract

Poultry as an industry was continuously growing worldwide and demands for poultry meats were markedly increasing. However, the limited use of antibiotics as treatments and as growth promoters became a serious problem due to the emergence of antibiotic resistance. Therefore, exploring other alternatives such as using feed additives like beta-glucans were widely studied and used to meet the demands of the consumers. This review focused on the different functions and effects of beta-glucans in poultry. Beta-glucans were known to have immunomodulation effects by upregulating the cytokines and other immune cells to overcome a disease. Aside from its immunomodulation effects, it can also increase the intestinal villi and crypts. Furthermore, an increase in growth performance was also observed. This evidence is promising but further research is required to properly establish the various functions of beta-glucans in poultry.

Abstract

The study was conducted to evaluate the effects of citric acid and mannanase feed supplementation on the growth performance of broiler chickens. Three hundred twenty day-old unsexed Cobb broiler chicks from a commercial hatchery plant were used in the study. The chicks were randomly assigned to four treatment groups following a completely randomized design. The following treatment groups were used: T1: Control, T2: 3% (w/w) Citric Acid supplementation, T3: 80 ppm β-Mannanase supplementation, and T4: 3% (w/w) Citric Acid and 80 ppm β-Mannanase supplementation. The supplementation of citric acid and mannanase significantly improves the growth performance of broiler chickens. Body weight and body weight gain were significantly higher (P<0.05) in the citric acid and β-mannanase combination group compared to all the treatment groups. The evaluation of feed intake revealed that T3 and T4 had significantly lower (P<0.05) feed intake than the other groups. The combination of citric acid and β-Mannanase also resulted in a significantly more efficient (P<0.05) feed conversion ratio. No mortality was observed during the experiment. It may be concluded that the supplementation of citric acid and β- mannanase resulted in a better performance in broilers.

Abstract

A four-week feeding trial was conducted to determine the effect of liquid toxin binder supplementation on the production performance of broiler chickens. A total of 400 seven-day-old Cobb broiler chicks were randomly distributed to four treatments following a Complete Randomized Design (CRD). The treatment groups consisted of the control group, continuous liquid toxin binder supplementation, reduced feed toxin binder inclusion, continuous liquid toxin binder supplementation, and intermittent liquid toxin binder supplementation. Each treatment was replicated four times with 25 chicks per replicate. The feeding trial was conducted from the age of 8th to 35th days of age. The acidifier used was a blend of activated charcoal, selenium, vitamin E, probiotics, prebiotics, mannan oligosaccharides, and bacterial cell wall components. The results showed significant effects (P<0.05) on the broilers' body weight gain, average daily gain, and feed efficiency from 8 to 14 days of age. Income over feed, chick, and medication cost of broilers was increased with continuous supplementation of liquid toxin binder and reduced feed toxin binder. This study indicates that continuous supplementation of liquid toxin binder and reducing the feed toxin binder is economically more advantageous to use in broiler production.

Abstract

Toxocara canis and Toxocara cati are important zoonotic parasites of dogs and cats. The increasing use of medicinal plants as anti-parasitic agents are attributed to its advantages like less side effects, with lower risk of anthelmintic resistance, and as cheaper alternatives. Although there are still no reports of anthelmintic resistance in Toxocara spp, the tendency of it happening should always be anticipated. This review summarized the in vitro and in vivo studies of the anti-Toxocara activity of plants, to enumerate the different plant extracts and the isolated active compounds in relation to their activity. In vitro studies investigated were primarily done in Toxocara larvae, mostly second-stage larvae, while in vivo studies were performed in animals mainly to assess the effect of the plant extracts on larval migratory behavior. Among the all plants described in this review, family Asteraceae was the most studied for their anthelmintic activity against toxocara species. The isolated active compounds with promising results were pyrethrin, kaurenes, palasonin, certain piperamides and curcuminoids, asarone, ascaridole, quercetin, thymohydroquinone (TQ), and secondary metabolites like flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, saponins, and glycosides. However, The mechanism of action of each active ingredient of the plant as an anti-toxocara requires further research.

Abstract

Feed additives are one of the most essential parts of broiler production. Feed additives such as citric acid and microbial phytase are usually used separately despite the theory that they can work together. In this study, 320 broiler birds were reared and then fed four different treatments. 10 birds were reared per pen and there were 8 replications per treatment. The birds were reared using normal broiler management and health management protocols. The growth parameters and mortalities were recorded after each growth period. Production cost and the market price during the duration of the experiment were used to assess profitability. Out of all the treatments, the combination of the citric acid and microbial phytase gave the highest body weight, weight gain, second-lowest feed intake, best feed conversion ratio, and the highest profitability. Results indicated that there is a synergistic interaction with the combination of 3% citric acid and 500 U/kg microbial phytases. The concurrent supplementation produced a significant increase in the growth parameters and profitability.

Abstract

Abstract

Poultry production contributes significantly to the agricultural economy. Nutrition is one important factor in having competent poultry production. Currently, there is a lot of research about natural alternatives or feed additives that are low in cost and can help increase the overall performance and improve poultry health conditions without any adverse effects. Macroalgae such as green seaweeds can meet these parameters. It is easily available and is considered a rich source of proteins, polysaccharides, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, pigments, and antioxidants. Most often, seaweeds are used as feed additives for broiler chickens as they can induce a beneficial impact on production parameters (body weight (BW), average daily gain (ADG), feed consumption (FC), and feed conversion ratio (FCR) and meat quality. However, there are several challenges in using green seaweed as a protein alternative for broiler chickens such as its toxic and antinutritional components, as well as varying available supply due to seasonal effects, diseases, location, and environmental pollution. Furthermore, the main objective of this review is to evaluate the different research conducted on green seaweed as a potential protein source in broilers.
