Abstract

Breast cancer is a malignancy of breast tissue that may arise from the epithelium of the ducts or lobules. Preventive measures by carrying out early detection by self-examination of the breast (BSE) can help find symptoms of breast cancer at an early stage so that the treatment given has high success. Street children are teenagers who are on the streets every day to get a source of life such as food, clothing and other living expenses. These adolescents are also susceptible to breast cancer if they are not given early education about breast cancer prevention. The objectives of this activity are (1) to form youth reproductive health cadres whose function is to educate and train their peers about BSE, (2) increase the knowledge and skills of street children about BSE, (3) early detection of breast cancer in street children (4) there is an immediate solution if there are adolescents who have detected symptoms of breast cancer. The activity was carried out in March 2023 at the Medan Maimun Lurah office. The research design was a quasi-experiment, the sample technique was the total sample, the number of samples was 42 people and the data analysis was the dependent t test. Health education is carried out 3 times a week with a duration of 1 hour. The material presented includes breast cancer (definition, causes, early detection, treatment and complications) and BSE (definition, purpose, benefits, tools and procedures); BSE examination training is carried out 5 times a week for 1 hour. The characteristics of the street children who participated in the activity showed that the majority of the youth were aged 16-20 years (90.47%), high school education (88.09%), Islam (90.47%) and Javanese (59.53%). The results of statistical tests on the effect of BSE training on knowledge obtained a value of P = 0.001 (<0.05) so it can be concluded that there was an effect of BSE training on adolescent knowledge, on attitudes obtained by a value of P = 0.001 (<0.05) so it can be concluded that there was an effect of BSE training on adolescent attitudes, to action obtained P value = 0.001 (< 0.05) so it can be concluded that there is an effect of BSE training on adolescent actions. This activity is proven to be able to increase the knowledge, attitudes and actions of adolescents towards BSE. Therefore it is hoped that the heads of KOPA and PUSKESMAS will carry out routine activities by empowering adolescents who have been trained.

Abstract

Violence against children continues to increase in many parts of the world, including Indonesia. School-aged children are particularly vulnerable to violence. Mothers have an important role as the primary caregiver closest to the child and the first person who can detect changes in behavior or emotions in children and signs of child abuse. This service activity aims to increase the role of mothers in preventing violence in school-age children by increasing mothers' knowledge of violence prevention. The community service activity was carried out on 4 December 2024, involving 35 mothers with school-age children, who were given education, pre-test, and post-test questionnaires. The pre-test and post-test results showed an increase in knowledge related to violence prevention in education participants. Before the education was given, there were 11 people (31.4%) who had good knowledge about preventing violence in children. In comparison, after the education was given, there were 17 people (48.6%) who had good knowledge about preventing violence in children. Providing education can improve mothers' knowledge of preventing violence in school-age children. There is a need for continuous education on child abuse so that mothers can detect early signs of child abuse as an effort to prevent violence.

Abstract

Sexual violence is a forced sexual act without consent and has consequences for health problems, namely reproductive health, physical health, and mental health, which can be felt in the short and long term. It has become a global issue that requires immediate attention. This study aims to analyze the relationship between parent-adolescent communication and adolescents' ability to protect themselves against sexual violence in Medan City. The research employs a quantitative approach using a descriptive correlation method, involving 52 respondents-students in grades X and XI at MAS Al-Jamiyatul Washliyah school in Medan City-selected through purposive sampling. The Chi-Square test was utilized for data analysis. Research data collection was carried out by distributing questionnaires using the google form application in May 2024, and computerized data processing using SPSS with univariate and bivariate data analysis. The findings revealed that 73.1% of respondents exhibited good parent-adolescent communication, 98.1% demonstrated effective self-protection skills, and 94.2% were considered at low risk of sexual violence. The results of the Chi-Square test indicated a significant relationship between parent-adolescent communication and the incidence of sexual violence, with a p-value of 0.003 (α = 0.05). However, there was no significant relationship found between adolescents' self-protection skills and the risk of sexual violence, as indicated by a p-value of 0.803 (α = 0.05). In conclusion, both parent-adolescent communication and self-protection skills are essential preventive measures against sexual violence. It is expected that schools can provide education related to the importance of parent-adolescent communication to prevent sexual violence.
