Abstract

Sukorejo Village is one of the villages in Jember Regency, where the reading interest among school-aged children remains low. Reflecting the common challenges faced by the younger generation today, Sukorejo Village requires concrete efforts to foster a reading culture, enabling the youth to perceive books as gateways to the world, thereby enhancing their knowledge and insights. Sukorejo Village features a tourist attraction known as the "Suko-Suko Canal," a serene destination with stunning natural landscapes along the river, surrounded by local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This community engagement initiative aims to explore the development of a nature-based library at the Suko-Suko Canal as a means of promoting reading interest among the younger generation. The method employed involves conducting a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) to design the concept and management of the nature-based library, followed by its establishment and culminating in a formal launch event. The outcomes of the initiative reveal that the library was designed and established to harmonize with the surrounding environment, featuring a collection of books focusing on environmental literacy, local culture, and children's education. During the socialization phase, various literacy activities, such as group reading sessions and educational games, successfully increased student participation and reading interest. The establishment of this nature-based library not only promotes literacy but also supports environmental conservation, offering an innovative solution to improve the literacy culture in Indonesia. Through an educational-recreational approach, the Suko-Suko Canal nature-based library has the potential to serve as a model for literacy development integrated with tourism in other regions. Abstract

Coffee is one of Indonesia's primary export commodities that contributes substantially to regional economic growth. Karangpring Village in Jember Regency holds considerable potential for producing high-quality coffee, yet faces persistent challenges in quality assurance, business legality, and international market access. This community service program aimed to strengthen the capacity of local farmers and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) through halal certification training, product diversification, branding development, and export literacy. Activities were conducted through structured workshops, technical mentoring, and digital marketing facilitation in collaboration with local institutions. Program outcomes included greater awareness of business legality requirements, the creation of coffee-based product innovations such as coffee bakpia, and the institutional development of BUMDes as a production and marketing coordinator. Halal certification raised consumer confidence and broadened export market opportunities. This initiative offers a replicable model of sustainable, export-oriented community development in rural Indonesia.

Abstract

Rose cultivation in Karangpring Village, Jember Regency, has long been trapped in a low-value commodity chain — sold as fresh cut flowers for grave ceremonies, with farmers earning well below the regional minimum wage. This community service program addresses that gap by applying a creative economy approach to transform raw rose commodities into marketable food and non-food products, including rose syrup, rose jam, bakpia, reed diffusers, and aromatherapy candles. The program was carried out through Focus Group Discussions (FGD), hands-on production training, and structured mentoring sessions with the Women Farmers Community (Kelompok Wanita Tani), covering product development, brand identity, and digital marketing through platforms such as Shopee and Instagram. Beyond product diversification, the program pursued a broader objective: building a self-sustaining creative economy community under village government oversight, capable of managing production, distribution, and market expansion independently. Outcomes indicate a positive shift in community capacity, with consistent participation across five to ten sessions and early market traction through repeat orders at the local level. The program also contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in the areas of economic welfare, commodity literacy, and responsible resource use. Scaling this initiative from a community unit to a full creative industry will require strategic investment and partnership — a challenge that remains open.
