Abstract

Maternal readiness for home care is crucial for optimal LBW outcomes. However, there are still many mothers who feel unprepared. The quality of discharge teaching provided to mothers is an important factor in this readiness. This study aims to determine the relationship between the quality of discharge teaching with discharge readiness in mothers of low birth weight (LBW) in the NICU. This study used a correlational method with a cross sectional approach. The study sample was 30 respondents based on inclusion and exclusion criteria using total sampling technique. Bivariate analysis with Fisher's exact test was used to analyze the data. Of the 30 respondents, 15 (50%) had a good level of discharge teaching quality, and 19 (63.3%) demonstrated good discharge readiness. The statistical test results demonstrated a significant relationship between the quality of discharge teaching and discharge readiness in mothers of low birth weight (LBW) in the NICU (p-value 0.016 < α 0.05). Mothers who received high-quality discharge teaching had a higher proportion of readiness for discharge (75%) compared to mothers who received low/moderate quality teaching (16.7%). The quality of discharge teaching plays an important role in improving discharge readiness in LBW mothers. Therefore, efforts to improve the quality of discharge teaching are recommended through effective communication training for nurses, and use of interactive learning media.

Abstract

CTEV (Congenital et al.) is defined as a condition in which there is adductor in the front of the foot and supination in the back, varus in the toes in the subtalar complex, equinus in the hindfoot, and medial deviation of the entire foot towards the floor surface. The CTEV therapy process requires routine and periodic evaluations until the child ages 4-5. This, of course, impacts the level of knowledge and compliance of parents in accompanying their children during the therapy program. Examining how health education utilizing leaflet media affects parents' understanding of children with CTEV is the primary goal of this study. One group was given a pretest-posttest as part of this quantitative study's quasi-experimental methodology. The parents of children who are patients make up the population. Thirty participants were selected using a purposive sampling method. Using a questionnaire as its measuring instrument, this study examines two parts: part A, which focuses on respondent characteristics, and part B, which delves into questions on CTEV and the knowledge element associated with it. The analysis used is a bivariate analysis using the Wilcoxon test. There is a significant difference in the mean level of parental knowledge on the pre-test and post-test in the experimental group, with a p-value of 0f 0.019. Health education regarding CTEV for parents who have children suffering from CTEV using leaflets influences the level of knowledge of respondents. Hopefully,  these results can be an alternative intervention to increase parents' knowledge about CTEV.

Abstract

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic substantially altered adolescents’ daily routines, including eating habits, physical activity, and sleep patterns, all of which may influence nutritional status. Evidence from Indonesia remains limited, particularly regarding the simultaneous contribution of these behavioral factors during periods of prolonged social restriction. Objective: This study aimed to examine the associations between dietary patterns, physical activity, sleep quality, and nutritional status among adolescents in Pekanbaru, Indonesia, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from June to November 2021 among 75 adolescents aged 15–18 years in Pekanbaru, Riau Province, Indonesia. Participants were recruited through convenience sampling using school and alumni WhatsApp groups. Data were collected online using a structured self-administered questionnaire that included a Food Frequency Questionnaire for dietary patterns, the Indonesian version of the Physical Activity Questionnaire for Adolescents (PAQ-A), and the Pediatric Daytime Sleepiness Scale (PDSS) for sleep-related problems. Nutritional status was assessed using self-reported weight and height to calculate body mass index (BMI), which was then classified into underweight, normal, and overweight categories. Descriptive statistics and chi-square tests were used for data analysis, with statistical significance set at p < 0.05. Results: Of the 75 participants, most were 17 years old (40.0%) and female (70.7%). Overall, 68.0% had normal nutritional status, 18.7% were overweight, and 13.3% were underweight. Chi-square analysis showed significant associations between dietary patterns and nutritional status (p = 0.001), sleep quality and nutritional status (p = 0.001), and physical activity and nutritional status (p = 0.001). These findings indicate that unhealthy dietary patterns, poor sleep-related functioning, and lower physical activity were associated with abnormal BMI categories among adolescents. Conclusion: Dietary patterns, physical activity, and sleep quality were significantly associated with adolescent nutritional status during the COVID-19 pandemic. These findings highlight the importance of integrated behavioral screening and adolescent health interventions targeting diet, movement, and sleep to support optimal nutritional outcomes.

Abstract

Adolescents are vulnerable to nutritional problems due to unhealthy eating habits and insufficient physical activity. Sedentary behavior and lack of balanced nutrition knowledge may be related to adolescent nutritional status. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between sedentary behavior and balanced nutrition knowledge with nutritional status among adolescents. The study used a cross-sectional design on 106 adolescents with proportional stratified random sampling. Instruments included ASAQ questionnaire for sedentary behavior, balanced nutrition knowledge questionnaire, and anthropometric measurements of nutritional status based on BMI/A z-score using WHO Anthro Plus. Analysis used Spearman Rho test. Results showed that the majority of respondents were 14 years old (35.8%), female (52.8%), participating in extracurricular activities (69.8%). High category sedentary behavior (59.4%) averaged 6.31 hours/day. Nutrition knowledge was poor category (53.8%). Nutritional status was mostly normal (64.2%), with distribution of severe malnutrition (0.9%), undernutrition (8.5%), overweight (18.9%), obesity (7.5%). There was no significant relationship between sedentary behavior and nutritional status (p=0.315) and balanced nutrition knowledge with nutritional status (p=0.449). These results indicate that sedentary behavior is not related to nutritional status because it is influenced by social media and family factors. Nutrition knowledge is not related to nutritional status because adolescents find it difficult to apply knowledge due to peer influence and environment.

Abstract

The postpartum period is a critical phase that requires optimal care to prevent maternal and neonatal complications. However, postpartum mothers living in the wetland area of Sri Meranti Subdistrict, Pekanbaru City, still have limited knowledge and skills regarding postpartum care and proper breastfeeding techniques. This community service program aimed to analyze the effectiveness of community empowerment-based postpartum care education in improving the knowledge and breastfeeding skills of postpartum mothers in wetland areas. The program employed a pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest approach involving 30 postpartum mothers in the working area of the Umban Sari Public Health Center from July to September 2024. The intervention was conducted through health education, demonstrations, and re-demonstrations using booklets and educational videos. Evaluation was performed using a knowledge questionnaire and the LATCH Assessment Tool. Data were analyzed using a paired t-test with a 95% confidence interval. The results demonstrated a significant increase in postpartum mothers’ knowledge scores from 70.3 ± 8.5 to 89.7 ± 5.4 after the intervention (p=0.001). In addition, the total LATCH score increased from 5.4 ± 1.8 to 9.0 ± 0.9 after the intervention. All LATCH components showed improvement in breastfeeding technique ability  among postpartum mothers. Educational interventions grounded in community empowerment have the potential to enhance postpartum mothers’ knowledge and breastfeeding skills. Such interventions may be considered routine promotive strategies within maternal health services in wetland communities. Keywords: Community empowerment, health education, postpartum care, postpartum mothers, wetlands area.
