Abstract

The study attempts to find out the effectiveness of an online learning platform provided by the English Department language center at Universitas Sumatera Utara regarding to the English Literature class of 2018 students’ writing skill. The thesis was conducted by analyzing the result of the questionnaire given to the students via google form. The research used the qualitative descriptive method and the indicators proposed by Slavin. Based on the questionnaire result, it showed that Learn Social online platform is effective for students’ writing skill. It is shown through the students’ feedback by answering the questionnaire where the result is positive. The indicators used in order to measure the effectiveness of the online platform are instruction, the appropriate level of instruction, incentive, and time where all four of the indicators get a positive result.

Abstract

Bullying is a serious issue within school environments that affects student well-being and the learning climate. This research aims to explore the effectiveness of implementing the Discord application as a tool to prevent and address bullying cases at T.P Daya Cipta Private Junior High School. The research results indicate an increase in student awareness regarding the importance of respecting differences, as well as a decrease in the number of reported bullying cases during the research period. Additionally, school staff reported an improvement in their ability to respond to and address bullying cases effectively through the Discord application. These findings suggest that the implementation of the Discord application can be an effective strategy for preventing and addressing bullying within school environments. This study provides a significant contribution to our understanding of the role of technology in creating safe and supportive school environments for all students.

Abstract

Happiness among people has been something quite familiar but unshaped, it has been difficult for people to feel happy in this era and many has started to wonder what is the real happiness. Do we need to feel the happiness in order to fell alive. This study explores the happiness in human live that consider to be important. This research undertakes the live of a character from a literary art that symbolize the authentic happiness itself. The findings indicate that characterization allow us to observe a character stages of emotions and feelings. findings also showed the three stages of happiness are the major evidence of experiencing True happiness itself and does it do. Findings showed that the happiness played a key role to help people condition and gave them the quality of living. However, research is limited to view extent considering the time allowance for the study, as well as the financial constraints experienced by the researcher. It is recommended to implement the three stages of happiness to give better Quality of living in human life.

Abstract

Community service activities are a mandatory responsibility for university lecturers as part of the Tri Dharma. This research aimed to investigate attitudes and behaviors towards environmental conservation and analyze the impact of theme-based learning on children in Sei Tuan Village, contributing to broader community-level efforts to protect and preserve the environment. A mixed-methods approach was employed, involving both qualitative and quantitative paradigms to collect and analyze data from 13 children residing in Sei Tuan Village, Deli Serdang Regency. A Pre-Test – Treatment – Post-Test methodology and observations were utilized in conducting the research. The results revealed that 85% of children in Sei Tuan Village demonstrated proficiency in distinguishing between healthy and unhealthy environments. Additionally, all individuals exhibited concern for the environment, including methods of preservation and the benefits of a pristine environment. Notably, 77% of students received comprehensive instruction on categorizing trash into organic, inorganic, and hazardous types. Moreover, 88.5% of individuals articulated positive effects resulting from nurturing environmental affection. Theme-based learning was found to enhance children's recognition of environmental and climate change issues, sparking their interest in learning, particularly in applying basic English vocabulary to care for and protect the environment.

Abstract

This research is intended to describe the double discrimination towards black women in society found in Hidden Figures and Where Hands Touch, and to find out the similarities and differences of double discrimination towards black women between the two films. This study used a qualitative descriptive method, which involves gathering, categorizing, and analyzing data. The data were dialogues and scene shots related to double discrimination. Based on the data analysis, there are racial and gender discrimination that is found in internal and external conflicts. After analyzing the data through the analysis of the intrinsic elements, similarities and differences are found between the two films. The two main characters; Katherine and Leyna, were similarly mistreated and harmed by society as black women. Katherine fought against double discrimination, while Leyna could do nothing but surrender. Their races and backgrounds are also different. Katherine was born to black American parents and lived in Virginia, United States. Meanwhile, Leyna was born biracial to black African and white German and lived in Berlin, Germany. In America in 1961, there was still tolerance, even though black women were still distinguished from white women. However, in Germany in 1944, there was no place for black women
