Abstract

Abstract: This study presents the ability of fourth semester students of English Study Program University of Riau in writing summary of a short movie .This study was based on fourth semester students’ experiences that have learned writing summary text in second semester. Moreover, fourth semester students’ also have learned about literature in third semester in Introduction to Literature subject. Because the fourth semester students will learn literature subjects in next semester, they should be able to write summary in another source, for example from movie. The participants were 38 students of fourth semester students English Study Program University of Riau. The participants were selected randomly from two classes. This study was conducted in one writing test based on Harris (1986) criteria. The instruments of the research were one writing form and short movie entitled Now or Never (Youtube.com). The research finding showed there were fewer students got satisfied score, which was the average of fourth semester students’ ability in writing summary of a movie fall into poor to average level. Based on this finding, it was suggested to fourth semester students of English Study Program University of Riau to develop their skill in grammar, mechanic, fluency and organization because these were the important aspects in learning a language especially in writing.Keywords: writing summary, using short movie, fourth semester students’ ability.

Abstract

Abstract: Based on the writer’s small observation in the process of teaching and learning English and an interview with one of the English teachers in SMA Negeri 11 Pekanbaru, most of students faced difficulties in speaking English and their speaking score were lower than KKM so that the teacher needed to find the appropriate teaching technique to improve their speaking ability. Therefore, this research was aimed to find out whether the application of Information Gap technique could improve the speaking skill of the students. The participants were 28 students of XI IPA 3 class. This research was conducted in two cycles, three meetings in each cycle. The instruments of this study were collected quantitatively by asking the students to tell story based on the picture sequences in the pre test, post test 1, post test 2 and qualitatively by asking the collaborator to fill the observation sheet and field note. The writer used the score in Pre-test as a guidance for her to conduct this research. The research finding showed that the application of information gap as the teaching technique could improve students’ speaking ability both at the first cycle and second cycle. The finding also proved that the students’ average score was only 68.10 in the pre-test, then it improved to 73.48 in the post-test 1, and finally improved to 82.10 in the post-test 2, it could increase students’ interest and motivation to speak and share ideas with their partners in pairs or groups since the core of information gap was a collaboration between groups or pairs, and it also improve students’ ability to speak English in terms of grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, fluency, and comprehension.Keywords: information gap technique, students’ speaking ability, picture sequences

Abstract

Abstract: This pre-experimental research aimed to find out whether there was a significant effect of using Listen-Read-Discuss strategy on reading comprehension ability on recount texts by the second year students of SMPN 13 Pekanbaru. The research design is a pre-experimental research with one group pre-test and post-test dessign. The sample was VIII-10 chosen by using cluster sampling technique. The result of the data analysis showed that mean scores of the pre-test was 60.69 and the mean score of the post-test was 70.35. In other words, the mean scores of the post-test is higher than the pre-test. The result also showed that the value of t-obs was higher than t-table (9.869 > 2.023) at significance level of 5%. It can be concluded that the Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and Null Hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. Hence, there is a significant effect of Listen-Read-Discuss strategy on reading comprehension ability on recount texts by the second year students of SMPN 13 Pekanbaru.Keywords: Effect, Listen-Read-Discuss, Reading Comprehension, Recount Texts.

Abstract

Abstract: This research was designed to experiment the effect of using PQ4R method on the ability of the first year students of SMK Pesantren Darel Hikmah Pekanbaru in comprehending recount texts. The aim was to find out the effect of using PQ4R method on the ability of the first year students of SMK Pesantren Darel Hikmah Pekanbaru in comprehending recount texts. This research took place in SMK Pesantren Darel Hikmah Pekanbaru, that collected from April to May 2018. The try out class was X TI class (17 students) and the sample was X Perbankan Syari’ah (25 students) chosen by cluster random sampling. This is a pre-experimental research with one group pre-test, post-test design. This research used quantitative data and the instrument used to collect the data was a reading test in multiple choice forms. As the result, the mean score of pre-test is 48.28 and the mean score of post-test is 56.20. In other words, the mean score of post-test is higher than the mean score of pre-test. The result also showed that the value of t-test (2.283) is higher than t-table (2.064) at the significance level 5%. It means that Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and Null Hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. It means that, there is any effect of using PQ4R method on the ability of the first year students of SMK Pesantren Darel Hikmah Pekanbaru in comprehending recount texts. It is suggested that in understanding recount text is one of alternative , the teacher needs to focus on the students’ understanding the sentences on the texts.Keywords: Comprehension, PQ4R Method, Recount Text.

Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to find out the effect of Team Word-Webbing on the ability of the first year students of SMAN PLUS RIAU in reading comprehension. The writer used Cluster Random Sampling technique to choose the sample. For 96 students of the population, class X M.S 4 was chosen as the sample. The instrument of this research was in form of test which consisted of pre-test and post-test. The test was narrative text. The test had five texts and each text had eight questions based on reading comprehension components so there were 40 questions for each text. The writer used SPSS 16.0 Program to analyze the data. Based on the results, the t-table was higher that the t-test and the Paired Samples Correlations was 0.914 which can be interpreted as very strong. It can be concluded that there is a significant effect of Team Word-Webbing on the ability of the first year students of SMAN PLUS RIAU in reading comprehension. It is suggested that this technique being applied in teaching reading narrative text or other texts. This technique can be applied not only in senior high school level but also in junior high school level. Fresh ideas or some improvisations from further researcher are really needed to make this technique better in its used.Key Words: Effects, Team Word-Webbing, Reading Comprehension

Abstract

Abstract: Teachers tend to increase the students’ ability by appliying techniques in teaching and learning process. One of them is as the topic of this article. This article is based on a research report about using KWL technique to increase the students’ ability in comprehending narrative texts. The purpose of this research is to find out whether or not using KWL technique could increase students’ ability in comprehending narrative texts and factors that could increase the ability. Classroom action research was designed in two cycles at XI IPS 2 of SMA N 5 Pekanbaru as the participant of this study. The data were collected through tests and observation sheets. This research found that KWL technique could increase the students’ ability in comprehending narrative texts. The average score of the data increased from 62,3 in pre-test, 72,3 in post-test I, and 80,3 in post-test II. It is in line with the students’ observation sheets in which there were also improvements in the students’ activeness during the teaching and learning process. The data showed that the average score of students’ activeness in cycle I was 58,5% and increased in cycle 2 to 87,5%. Based on the writer’s observation, the improvement of the students were due to some factors dealing with the KWL technique. They were using chart, leading the students to think independently, and making the students became more active. This study suggests that the students can apply this tekhnique continuously in learning reading subject. Moreover, the teacher should be able to manage the time, so the teaching and learning process will be going effectively. In addition, it is expected that other researcher will conduct this technique in other genre of the texts.Key words: KWL technique, reading ability, narrative texts

Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to find out the second year students’ ability of SMA 2 Tambang in writing announcements. This research focuses on grammar, vocabulary, mechanic, form, and fluency based on writing announcements. The instrument used by the writer to collect the data for this study is writing test, that is writing announcements. Based on the research finding in SMA 2 Tambang, it can be found that, first, the ability of the students in writing announcements is in good level. Second, the students’ mean score in grammar is 63, vocabulary is 68, mechanic is 65, fluency is 56, and form is 54.The highest score obtained by the students for vocabulary that in at good level, and the lowest score that the students got is for form at in mediocre level.Keywords: Ability, Writing, Announcements.

Abstract

Abstract: After doing a small observation in the process of teaching and learning English and having an interview with one of English teachers in MTs Bustanul Ulum Pekanbaru especially in the second year students. Most of the students were lack of interest to learn writing ability and their writing score were lower than KKM so the teacher and the researcher needed to find out the way to attract the students’ interest in learning writing ability. Students Teams Achievement Divisions (STAD)method was chosen to improve the students’ writing ability in writing recount text because STAD method could attract the students’ interest by giving a reward to the students in the end of meeting. Then, the researcher also want to introduce about cooperative learning method to the students through STAD method. This research was aimed to find out whether STAD method could improve the students’ writing ability. The participants were 31 students of second year students. All of the students were girls. The data were collected from August 21 until Sept 25, 2015. This research was an Classroom Action Research (CAR) which consisted of three cycles, two meetings in each cycle. The research finding showed that STAD method could improve the students’ writing ability, the improvement could be seen from pre-test with average score was only 44,3 (Moderate) and post test-three increased to 70,6 (Good). STAD method was attracted and motivated the students in learning writing. It also helped the students to build their confidence and became more active in achieving their objectives. Abstract

Abstract: This research aimed to find out whether there is a significant effect of fishbowl technique on the speaking ability of the first year students of SMAN 12 Pekanbaru. This is a pre-experimental research conducted by using a pre-test – treatment – post-test design. The instrument administered in this research was oral speaking tests (pre-test and post-test). The population of this research was 420 of the first year students of SMAN 12 Pekanbaru and the sample of this research is the X4 of social science class of SMAN 12 Pekanbaru. The total number of students is 36 students. The collected data were analyzed by operating statistical analysis in form of SPSS 23.0 in order to compare the results of students’ speaking ability in the pre-test and post-test. The results of data analysis showed that the mean score of pre-test was 55.26, and the mean score of post-test was 69.74. Based on the data analysis, it can be concluded that there is a significant difference between the pre-test and the post-test because the t-test observed was higher than t-table. In other words, the alternative hypothesis of this research was accepted. It means that teaching speaking by fishbowl technique was effective to improve students’ speaking ability.Key Words : Speaking Ability, Fishbowl technique

Abstract

Abstract: This study was aimed at investigating students’ strategies and challenges in improving speaking ability in a context of Vocational High School 1 Rengat. This case study employed combining quantitative and qualitative research methods. There were 27 students of Vocational High School 1 Rengat chosen as participants of this study. All of them was asked to fill in a survey of the questionnaires, then 10 out of 27 students were randomly selected to have semi-structured interviews. The results of the study showed that students of Vocational High School 1 Rengat have some challenges in improving speaking ability. Based on the data from questionnaires and semi-structured interviews, it was found that most participants (99,3%) are lack of grammar mastery, some others (74,8%) choose to speak a local language in learning process, and (68,1%) feel nervous when they are asked to speak English. Then, at the same time, they also have some strategies in improving speaking ability. The results show that an interesting topic that is given by the teacher is the one of strategies that is needed by the students (78,6%), and other participants show that (71,1%) find partner as the next strategy that is needed by the students. Meanwhile, at the next strategy (69,6%) participants likes to listen to western music to improving their speaking ability.
