Abstract

Crude oil from Well X contains both hydrocarbon and non-hydrocarbon components, and during its transportation from Field D to Port E, it encounters technical challenges due to wax formation at low temperatures. This wax formation increases the crude oil’s viscosity, complicating the pumping process and raising operational costs. This study aims to reduce the viscosity of crude oil by injecting a chemical viscosity reducer at various doses: 0 ppm, 500 ppm, 1000 ppm, 1500 ppm, and 2000 ppm. The method involved viscosity testing following the addition of the chemical viscosity reducer at each dose level. The results indicate that the optimal dose is 2000 ppm, which successfully reduces the average viscosity from 604 cP to 313 cP. This reduction is attributed to the interaction of non-polar compounds in the chemical viscosity reducer that dissolve wax and inhibit paraffin crystallization, as well as polar compounds that disperse asphaltene molecules. These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of chemical viscosity reducers in enhancing crude oil transport performance and operational efficiency, particularly under low-temperature environmental conditions.

Abstract

The limited number of studies on the use of modified silica gel as a stationary phase in ion chromatography, particularly for magnesium ion (Mg²⁺) analysis, forms the basis of this research. The primary objective is to modify silica gel with 3-glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS) and sulfonate groups to develop a novel stationary phase selective for Mg²⁺ analysis. A quantitative experimental method was employed using Mg²⁺ samples at concentrations of 100, 200, and 300 ppm. Analysis was conducted using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) with two types of eluents: tartaric acid (0.05 M, 0.07 M, 0.09 M) and methanesulfonic acid (0.01 M). The results show that tartaric acid failed to produce distinct chromatographic peaks at all concentrations, likely due to its low ionic strength, which caused Mg²⁺ ions to remain strongly bound to the stationary phase, resulting in signal-to-noise (S/N) ratios below the quantification limit. In contrast, methanesulfonic acid generated sharp peaks with a retention time of 7.47 minutes, peak height of 53.68 mAU, and peak area of 4.42, indicating effective Mg²⁺ detection. These findings suggest that the high ionic strength of methanesulfonic acid makes it a more suitable eluent for silica gel GPTMS-sulfonate-based ion-exchange chromatography systems. The main conclusion of this study is that GPTMS-sulfonate silica gel exhibits high potential as a stationary phase for Mg²⁺ ion analysis using ion chromatography, with optimal performance when methanesulfonic acid is used as the eluent.

Abstract

The high consumption of iced tea beverages in the community increases potential exposure to artificial sweeteners, particularly sodium cyclamate, whose use is regulated in Regulation of the National Agency of Drug and Food Control (BPOM) No. 11 of 2019. The use of cyclamate that does not comply with regulatory limits may pose health risks, thereby requiring effective monitoring through analytical laboratory methods that are accurate, precise, and validated. BPOM has established a standard method for the determination of sodium cyclamate using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC); however, in practice there are still variations in HPLC operating conditions across laboratories, such as differences in column type, mobile phase composition, and detection parameters, which may affect analytical results. Therefore, this study aimed to develop and validate an HPLC method that is compatible with specific laboratory conditions while still meeting analytical performance requirements. The results showed that a new HPLC method was successfully developed and validated for the analysis of sodium cyclamate levels in iced tea beverages. This method met all validation parameters, including linearity, precision, accuracy, limit of detection (LOD), and limit of quantitation (LOQ), and is thus suitable for determining sodium cyclamate content. The use of a methanol–water mobile phase with a 5:95 ratio proved optimal, as it provided good separation efficiency, adequate analysis time, and simplified the testing procedure. Overall, the developed method offers a practical, economical, and reliable analytical alternative to support food safety surveillance related to the use of artificial sweeteners in iced tea beverages.

Abstract

Corrosion engineering has taken great interest in many industries that required high cost management to overcome the serious problems. This work has investigated the role of watermelon peel extract as green inhibitor to protect carbon steel in seawater. This investigation has studied the corrosion rate and inhibition efficiency applying weight loss method.  The laboratory result shows the optimum inhibition efficiency found to be 71.64% at 5% inhibitor concentration in 100 ml seawater at room temperature. The effects of temperature and immersion time on inhibition efficiency have also been examined.  This study has used Arrhenius equation based on activation energy to determine type of adsorption encountered with corrosion process. The result shows a chemical adsorption justified by its high adsorption heat and strengthened by FTIR and UV-Vis examinations. The phytochemical examination of watermelon peel extract gives positive response to flavonoid, alkaloid, and saponin. The finding is useful for many industries encountered with carbon steel corrosion in corrosive medium using green inhibitor.

Abstract

Methylene blue is a cationic dye that has the potential to contaminate aquatic environments and therefore requires an effective treatment method, one of which is adsorption. This study aimed to analyze the adsorption isotherm characteristics of methylene blue on EDA/Cu-modified silica xerogel and determine the most appropriate isotherm model. The study was conducted experimentally by varying the initial methylene blue concentration from 400 to 1,100 mg/L under optimum adsorption conditions. The adsorption equilibrium data were analyzed using the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models through a linear regression approach. The results showed that the Langmuir model exhibited a higher goodness of fit, with an R² value of 0.9967, than the Freundlich model, which obtained an R² value of 0.5763. Analysis using the Langmuir model yielded a maximum adsorption capacity (Qm) of 235.63 mg/g and a Langmuir constant (KL) of 0.201 L/mg, whereas the Freundlich model yielded a Kf constant of 109.3 and an n value of 6.44. These findings indicate that the adsorption of methylene blue on EDA/Cu-modified silica xerogel is better described by the Langmuir isotherm model, indicating the formation of a monolayer on the relatively homogeneous adsorbent surface. This study strengthens the understanding of the equilibrium adsorption mechanism of dyes on modified silica materials and demonstrates the potential of EDA/Cu-modified silica xerogel as an adsorbent for treating dye-containing wastewater.
