Abstract

Abstract

Background: Environmental degradation caused by artisanal and small-scale gold mining in Bombana, Southeast Sulawesi, presents serious ecological and public health risks, including mercury and arsenic contamination. Previous studies highlight the importance of culturally grounded education in promoting sustainable conservation practices, yet few have tested the validity and reliability of instruments designed to measure learning outcomes in this context. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the EcoMoronene Initiative, an educational model that integrates Moronene local wisdom—such as sacred forest stewardship, water resource protection, and biodiversity conservation—into youth-based conservation learning. Methods: A quasi-experimental pre–post control design was applied with 80 participants divided equally into an experimental group, which received the EcoMoronene module, and a control group, which followed regular activities. Data were collected through a knowledge–attitude questionnaire, a conservation behavior rubric, and observation, then analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-tests, Cronbach’s alpha, and confirmatory factor analysis. Findings: Findings revealed significant improvements in the experimental group’s knowledge (mean increase from 6.2 to 8.5, p = 0.001), alongside positive shifts in attitudes and behaviors, while the control group showed negligible changes. Reliability analysis confirmed strong internal consistency (α = 0.86 for the Knowledge–Attitude questionnaire; α = 0.83 for the Behavior rubric), and validity was supported by good model fit indices (χ²/df = 1.8, CFI = 0.94, RMSEA = 0.05). These results demonstrate that embedding local wisdom into conservation education enhances motivation, cultural identity, and pro-environmental actions among youth. Conclusion: research study that distinguish it from previous work. It includes unique contributions, new methods, or findings that have not been explored before in the field. Novelty/Originality of this article: This study uniquely integrates Moronene local wisdom into conservation education, validating reliable instruments and demonstrating significant improvements in youth knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors, distinguishing it from prior research in environmental education.

Abstract

Abstract

Background: Peri-urban residential development can replace agricultural and ruderal habitats, simplify ecological structure, and alter adjacent freshwater communities. Baseline studies are often presented descriptively without checking taxonomic or arithmetic consistency. This study evaluated terrestrial and aquatic biological conditions at the proposed Sunville Residence site and the connected Tamangapa Canal in Gowa Regency, Indonesia. Methods: The 2025 baseline dataset included count-based inventories of herb and shrub vegetation, direct observations and community information for terrestrial fauna and nekton, and phytoplankton observations at two canal stations. Shannon diversity, Pielou evenness, and Simpson concentration were independently recalculated from the tabulated abundances. A planning-level biomass estimate used the reported 29.67 ha conversion area, a crop-biomass assumption of 12 t/ha, and an urban-tree biomass equivalence of 35 t/ha. Findings: The source listed 50 herb records and 51 shrub records. Herb counts summed to 1,938, rather than the reported 1,926, and produced H′=3.103; the reported H′=3.116 was reproduced only when the lower denominator was used. Shrub counts summed consistently to 6,473, but recalculation produced H′=3.452, compared with the reported 3.1162. The faunal survey recorded two mammals, three birds, one amphibian, two reptiles, one annelid group, six arthropod groups, and three fish taxa, with several identifications requiring taxonomic verification. Phytoplankton diversity was moderate at the upstream station (H′=1.364) and downstream station (H′=1.197); both communities were uneven and dominated numerically by Navicula and Oscillatoria records. According to the source classification table, these values indicate moderate rather than light pollution. The biomass assumptions yielded 356.04 t of existing biomass and an equivalent tree-based green-space area of 10.17 ha. Conclusion: The site retains diverse but disturbance-associated vegetation, limited observed vertebrate richness, and a canal plankton community that warrants physicochemical and seasonal verification. Development approval should be linked to riparian avoidance, taxonomic confirmation, functionally diverse green infrastructure, invasive-species control, and repeated post-construction monitoring. Novelty/Originality of this article: The study combines terrestrial and aquatic baseline evidence with an explicit audit of biodiversity indices, totals, pollution interpretation, and biomass calculations, then converts the corrected evidence into measurable biodiversity-management actions for a peri-urban housing project.

Abstract

Background: Rapid conversion of peri-urban land to housing increases impervious cover, accelerates runoff, and can overload small drainage corridors. This study evaluated the hydrological baseline and proposed stormwater infrastructure for the Sunville Residence development in Paccinongang, Gowa Regency, Indonesia. Methods: The assessment integrated creek geometry and velocity surveys conducted in June and December 2025, NASA Global Precipitation Measurement rainfall for 2015–2024, a 24-month comparison with nearby Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency gauge maxima, partial-duration screening above 50 mm/day, reported Gumbel design rainfall, Mononobe rainfall intensity, the Rational Method, open-channel hydraulic checks, detention-volume calculations, and suspended-sediment loads. Satellite validation used bias, mean absolute error, root mean square error, Pearson correlation, percent bias, and Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency. Findings: Observed creek discharge ranged from 0.495 to 0.660 m³/s. NASA rainfall underestimated gauge maxima by 8.98 mm on average, with a mean absolute error of 18.13 mm, root mean square error of 24.75 mm, correlation of 0.68, percent bias of −19.82%, and Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency of 0.36. The reported 10-year design rainfall and intensity were 122.91 mm and 7.34 mm/h. Estimated runoff increased from 1.29 m³/s during construction to 1.80 m³/s during operation as the runoff coefficient rose from 0.25 to 0.35. The proposed channel capacity was 1.90 m³/s, leaving only 0.10 m³/s or 5.6% hydraulic margin. An illustrative aggregate bias adjustment increased operational runoff to 2.24 m³/s, above the stated capacity. A 13,000 m³ sedimentation pond marginally exceeded the corrected 8-hour storage requirement of 12,960 m³. Estimated sediment load increased from 1.25 t/day upstream to 1.40 t/day downstream. Conclusion: The proposed system is nominally adequate under the reported design event, but its narrow capacity and storage margins require reconciliation of input inconsistencies, sensitivity testing, clogging allowances, and integrated source-control measures before final engineering approval. Novelty/Originality of this article: The study combines hydrological calculation with a reproducibility audit that identifies numerical and documentation inconsistencies that materially affect drainage safety decisions in a fast-growing Indonesian residential catchment.
