Abstract

Society services activity on cattle waste management system have been implemented in Sido Mulyo Livestock Farmers Group at Pulosari, Jumoyo, Salam, Magelang. Animal byproducts that consist of feces and urine of cattle wastewas processed into organic fertilizer compost and liquid fertilizer. Sido Mulyo Livestock Farmer Group has one unit of 20 m3 biodigester to accommodate the feces from approximately 30 cattle owned by the group member. Biogas has been used as a fuel source for family group members located around the cage. Slurry resulted from anaerobic digestion of biodigester disposed to pastures located on the right side of the cage. Ownership system in the groupis every group member hasa responsibility for taking care of their own cattle. The number of livestock owned by each member of the SidoMulyoLivestock Farmers Group ranged between 1 to 4 cattle. Society services methods that have been implemented was in the form of mentoring for a member of the Sido Mulyogroup. The other activities that have been implemented was the training and development of cattle industry, especially the handling of livestock waste in the form of feces, urine, and the feed residue. The activities was continued by the manufacture of compost packaging design, followed by the last series of activities such as monitoring and program development. The enthusiasm of the group members in joining to the extension activities is very good. The timing of the extension are determined in the afternoon after members of the group have finished searching feed for their cattle. The sustainability forwaste processing into organic fertilizer compost and liquid organic fertilizer becomes a major concern, because it is highly dependent on consumer demand.

Abstract

Proteolytic enzyme, which is able to hydrolyze keratin efficiently, is called keratinase, produced by microorganisms including fungi, bacteria and actinomycetes, and considered useful for various biotechnological approaches to waste management. Keratin is a fibrous, structural and insoluble protein, and it has high stability. Keratin is one of the main components for cell cytoskeleton, including hair and wool. Hair is difficult to degrade because it contains a lot of keratin with dense polypeptide structure, which is tightly bound by several hydrogen bonds, hydrophobic interactions, and cross-linkage of protein chain with cystine bridge. This condition makes hair have mechanical stability and resistant against degradation of proteolytic enzymes, such as pepsin, trypsin, and papain. Keratin has great strength, but it is not accumulated in nature because it can be hydrolyzed by several keratinolytic microbes. Keratinase enzyme is a part of alkaline protease group, which is active in alkaline condition. Several keratinolytic bacteria produce keratinase enzyme which remains active at pH 8 to 13. The activity of keratinase enzyme also greatly varies by temperature. Keratinase enzyme has stable activity at 20 to 70oC. Enzyme is protein which has catalytic activity and has certain molecular weight. Keratinase enzyme mostly has molecular weight which is less than 85 kDa. Enzymatic hair removal process can be used as an alternative to avoide problems caused by using sodium sulfide in tannery. The benefit of enzymatic hair removal process is perfect hair removal, so that the skin is clean and smooth; removed hair is intact; and sodium sulfide usage is minimized. Keratinase enzyme specifically degrades keratin without damaging other structural proteins, such as collagen, so it has high potential for leather industry.

Abstract

Beta-casein in milk is known to be a bioactive peptide producer because of its amino acid sequence. Bioactive peptides have prospected molecules that can adhere with SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, so they can inhibit the virus from hooking up with human cell receptor protein. The research is aimed to find any peptides from goat’s milk beta-casein that are prospective candidates as SARS-CoV-2 spike protein inhibitors. Goat’s milk beta-casein was simulated as being digested by the digestive tract. Pepsin, trypsin, and chymotrypsin enzymes cut the beta-casein amino acids sequence into small peptides. Then, their bioavailability was predicted by Lipinski’s Rules of 5 (Ro5), any most fitted peptides to the rules will be simulated to dock to SARS-CoV2 spike protein besides Curcumin as the control ligand. Peptides with the best bind activity with the spike protein will be selected as inhibitor candidates. Peptide QPK is selected as a SARS-CoV-2 inhibitor candidate because it has better affinity energy than Curcumin or other selected peptides.

Abstract

The village of Rawa Subur in Central Kalimantan, specifically in the Kapuas region, shows promise in the livestock sector, particularly in duck farming. Local residents process duck eggs into salted eggs to improve product marketability. The rising demand for salted eggs has driven the community to explore more efficient processing methods, including the use of ovens. The salted egg production process involves cooking at 80°C for 24 hours, followed by steaming for several hours. However, there's limited knowledge about the optimal steaming duration for achieving the best salted egg quality. This study aims to reveal the impact of varying steaming durations post-oven treatment on texture, visual appearance, and salt content in salted eggs, aiming to formulate a suitable Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). Using a completely randomized design, the study includes four steaming duration treatments (0, 2, 4, 6 hours) after a 24-hour oven treatment. Simple Linear Regression analyzes the data to identify the relationship between steaming duration variations and salt content. Laboratory tests show that salt content in salted eggs for steaming durations (0, 2, 4, 6 hours) is 16.85%, 20.97%, 22.33%, and 24.87%, respectively, with a Significance (Sig.) value of 0.021 (<0.05). This confirms that steaming duration significantly influences salt content. Detailed analysis reveals a substantial impact of steaming duration on salt content, accounting for 95.8%, as indicated by the coefficient of determination (R-squared) value of 0.958. In conclusion, prolonged steaming increases salt content in salted eggs. In response, the Village Family Welfare Development Group in Rawa Subur has begun implementing SOPs for food processing, involving the use of ovens and steaming for four hours.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the quality of sheepskin after the tanning process using mimosa and to analyze the microscopic structure of mimosa-tanned sheepskin that had been eco-printed. The research method used sheepskin samples that had undergone optimal with mimosa. The sheepskin tanning research evaluated samples subject to four different treatments: treatment A (15% mimosa), treatment B (20% mimosa), treatment C (25% mimosa), and treatment D (30% mimosa). The sheepskin eco-print research compared the sheepskin eco-print samples treated with treatment 1 (temperature 60oC), and treatment 2 (temperature 65oC). The evaluation of tanned leather quality was conducted by measuring several parameters, such as tensile strength, elongation, tear strength, thickness, plasticity, and shrinkage temperature. The quality of the sheepskin eco-print was evaluated by measuring the color fastness to rubbing, and SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopic). The data obtained were analyzed statistically using variance analysis of a complete randomized design with a unidirectional pattern. In instances where significant differences were identified, a mean difference test was performed with Duncan's Multiple Range Test. The results showed that tanning leather using mimosa, conducted in stages had a significant effect (p < 0.05) on the parameters of tensile strength, extensibility, tear strength, thickness, goldenness, and shrinkage temperature. The application of tanner with 30% mimosa on sheepskin emerged as the best tanner concentration. The treatment resulted in a tensile strength value of 1332.28 N/cm2, elongation of 45.90%, tear strength of 102.9 N/cm, thickness of 2.06 mm, plasticity of 5.33 mm, and shrinkage temperature of 81.73oC. Additionally, the results of the color fastness test against wet and dry rubbing, along with SEM from the 60oC produced good eco-print results.
