Abstract

ABSTRACT: Historizing a collective life requires moments of time which construct a shared memory, moments in time that have brought a revolutionary change in the collective life, moments of marking that shared life in the progressive time sequencing, and moments of repetitions of what has been lived and experienced in that collectiveness. Without a moment of revolutionary change, the finding of that moment in history would seek into other forms of acknowledgement. Accordingly, the Pekalongan city in Central Java has a significant role in the development of batik production in Indonesia; and so, in 2011, this city was launched as the “world batik city” by the government. This gesture was made to re-activate the dynamics of life in Pekalongan as it has experienced a decline in its industrial productivity. Other local potentials that support the characteristics of Pekalongan as a batik city have also been re-activated and upgraded, such as conserving the local batik kampongs, “Kauman” and “Pesindon”, to be part of the national batik tourist destination areas. This writing will analyze how the life in Pekalongan underwent its historical process and how the external and internal factors interacted and weaved the various texture of life as it became the local color and identity of Pekalongan. Qualitative analysis methods are used in this writing to redefine what is commonly understood as a process of historization, and how this understanding can be used to look at the different contexts of life in Pekalongan. The finding of this research will show other possibilities that can be explored in the process of redefining and historizing the life of this city.KEY WORDS: Historizing, collective life, batik, Pekalongan, world batik city, tourist destination area, local color and identity, and redefining of history.  About the Authors: Katherina Allo is a Doctoral Student at the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design ITB (Bandung Institute of Technology), Jalan Ganesha No.10 Tamansari, Bandung, West Java, Indonesia; and Prof. Dr. Yasraf Amir Piliang is a Lecturer at the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design ITB Bandung, West Java, Indonesia. Abstract

ABSTRACT Ahead of the 2014 election, political and social issues become topics that are often raised on the television talk shows. The existence of a talk show as visual discourse is interesting to study because it can influence public opinion on an issue which involves public figures. In addition to raising the popular issue, the talk show is also designed to perform a professional host and resource person who is in the issue. Mata Najwa talk show on Metro TV is one of the talk shows that features the visual power. By using the studio design as a talk space background, this program focuses on the visual power of Najwa Shihab as the host and resource person appearances where the body of participants become a construction of media to attract the audience’s attention. This study discusses one of epi- sodes of ‘Mendadak Capres’ that presents a public figure Rhoma Irama as resource person. Qualita- tive analysis with Social Semiotic approach puts participants  as part of discourse elements in the production.  The focus of discussion include visual signs which consist of facial expressions, hand gestures and body position of the host and the resource person to build their identity and power in the visual discourse of the conversation. The body language of participants becomes important because it can build the audience perception and support atmosphere for discussion. This study can also be a model  that the power of a talk show lies not only on the topic, but also on the visual power of the participants through their body language. Keywords: visual discourse, body language, and visual power  ABSTRAK Menjelang Pemilu 2014, isu sosial politik menjadi topik yang sering diangkat dalam pro- gram bincang-bincang  (talk show) di televisi.

Abstract

Film is a medium of visual communication that plays a role in the dissemination of women's concept discourse in Indonesia, one of which is due to its distinctive characteristics that can last for a long period of time, potentially wider in its dissemination, including also being a mass media hypnotic culture. The film is closely related to the concept of gaze, male gaze in the cinematography industry, which according to overly uses men's views, which is positioning women as subjects who have no power over themselves (self-possessiveness) but as objects of male gaze. Women become commodities in the film, a sex object that is commodified to construct an image that represents the position of women is as an additional role that is not important in one film narrative. In the male gaze narration, women in the film do not act, but become part of the actions of men. Morally, male gaze assumes that the behavior of women in films has a vacuum, but in Garin Nugroho's 'Setan Jawa’ using Deleuze's cinematic study, women are positioned to have other representations that differ from the ethics of cinematics which do not place women as signs of sex objectification for the sake of fulfillment of men's desires, but as subjects who are fully empowered and may wish of themselves.

Abstract

Kata kunci:  gaya visual, ilustrasi, konfluen budaya.ABSTRACTThe Industrial Revolution during the 18th century caused the emergence of urban environment consisted of various community types which interacted and turned into new social classes and groups. The culture of those new communities thus shaped some complex bonds of thought patterns which cannot be called ‘hereditary’ anymore, termed by Ulf Hannerz as cultural confluences. The usage of term ‘confluence’ refers to something fluid, flowing, and mixing, as a hint that culture is not a rigid tradition anymore. This research aims to analyse the history of cultural confluences in the development of Indonesia’s visual culture through sampling of Sajarah Banten manuscript’s illustrations made in 18th by using discourse analysis method. The result shows that the aesthetic style used in the illustrations shows adaptations from Indonesia’s traditional style with external influences like from the West or Middle East. In other words, cultural confluences had existed even before the Digital Revolution 4.0 in Indonesia and it is not a threat, instead it can expands the visual vocabularies of Indonesia. Keywords: cultural confluences, illustration, visual style.

Abstract

Abstract

The environmental and social issues raised by the linear fashion industry are addressed through circular fashion. It utilizes a closed-loop method that encourages mindful behavior along the entire fashion value chain, from creation to disposal. This article describes the application of a systemic design approach to collaborative circular fashion initiatives with a focus on creating sustainable partnerships and promoting circular fashion initiatives between fashion design Universitas Ciputra, the Surabaya city government Environmental Office, and representatives of 40 Kampung Zero Waste. The methodology used in this research study was based on a systemic design approach, which recognized the interconnection and interdependencies within the circular fashion system. Although the research study did not specifically assess the program's impacts it was a crucial first step in creating awareness and initiating collaborative efforts to promote the adoption of circular fashion in Indonesia. Focusing on the early stages of fostering circular fashion with the help of the Surabaya City Government Environmental Office and zero-waste communities produced insightful findings. Future projects and interventions could be built upon a strong foundation that was provided by the systemic design approach and interdisciplinary collaboration. The research results advance knowledge of comprehensive models and collaborative strategies for encouraging circularity in the fashion industry.
