Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of various organic fertilizers and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on the growth and production of alfalfa plants in the tropics. This study used a completely randomized design (CRD) factorial pattern consisting of two factors with ten replications. Factor A included the types of organic fertilizer, including chicken manure, cow manure, goat manure, and vermicompost. Factor B was the dose of AMF, which included 0 g and 10 g. The results revealed an interaction effect (p<0,01) between the type of organic fertilizer and AMF factors on AMF colonization in alfalfa roots and leaf chlorophyll. The single factor of the type of organic fertilizer had a very significant effect (p<0,01) on increasing the pH, plant height, number of branches, number of leaves, root fresh weight, shoot fresh weight, and shoot dry weight of the media. Moreover, the single factor AMF had no significant effect (p>0,05) on the observed parameters. In conclusion, the application of various types of organic fertilizers with 20% media volume effectively increased the growth and production of alfalfa plants, and the type of organic fertilizer, cow manure, was the best treatment. The application of organic fertilizers alone or in combination with 10 g of AMF did not significantly affect the growth and production of alfalfa plants

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of manure on the production and nutrients of Indigofera zollingeriana legumes on a field scale. This study used a completely randomized design (CRD) with 6 treatments (FS0 = 0 ton ha-1 manure, FS5 = 5 ton ha-1 manure, FS10 = 10 ton ha-1 manure, FS15 = 15 ton ha-1 manure, FS20 = 20 ton ha-1 manure, FS25 = 25 ton ha-1 manure) and 5 replications. The data obtained were tested using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and if there was a significant difference, it was continued with the Duncan test. The results showed that the use of manure effectively increased (p<0.05) soil pH, number of leaves, plant height, stem circumference, number of branches, fresh biomass production, dry biomass, leaf stem ratio, and nutrient biomass (crude protein and crude fiber), but has not been able to improve the nutrient quality of Indigofera zollingeriana on a field scale. It can be concluded the use of manure at a level of 25 tons ha-1 resulted in the best production of Indigofera zollingeriana plants.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the quality of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF) inoculum produced using various nutrient fortification methods for Desmanthus virgatus plants in helping to cope with salinity stress. This study was conducted at the Agrostology Laboratory of IPB University with a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) Factorial Pattern 5 x 3 with 8 replications. Factor A was types of AMF, namely AMF without administration (JM0), commercial/superior AMF (JMU), AMF fortified with AB Mix 1000 ppm (JM1), AMF fortified with AB Mix 2000 ppm (JM2), and AMF fortified with AB Mix 3000 ppm (JM3). Factor B was levels of soil salinity, namely control soil (JT0), medium saline soil (JT1), and high saline soil (JT2). Each plant was given 20 g of AMF, compost, and NPK fertilizers. Both plants without AMF and with AMF were given different doses of fertilizer, namely 100% dose and 50% dose. The results showed that inoculation of JMU, JM1, JM2 and JM3 had the same AMF colonization consistency in JT0, JT1 and JT2. AMF inoculation of JMU, JM1, JM2, and JM3 effectively increased (p<0.05) the vertical height of Desmanthus virgatus on high saline soil (JT2). The production of dry weight of JM3 shoots on high saline soil (JT2) was the highest (p<0.05) among other treatments. Leaf chlorophyll of JMU, JM1, JM2, and JM3 in control soil (JT0) was significantly higher than JM0, but it was not significantly different in medium saline soil (JT1) and high saline soil (JT2). AMF inoculation with JMU, JM1, JM2, and JM3 effectively reduced leaf proline content in highly saline soil (JT2), while salinity significantly (p<0.05) increased the leaf proline levels of Desmanthus virgatus. The conclusion was that AMF could increase the productivity of Desmanthus virgatus legumes on high-salinity soil. Desmanthus virgatus has an acceptable tolerance level on medium and high saline soils. Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi JM3 (result of AB Mix 3000 ppm fortification) has a better production ability than JM1, JM2, and JMU on high saline soil. Key words: forage crops, marginal land, legumes

Abstract

This study aims to measure the effect of different doses of cow manure and urea fertilizer on plant growth and the production quality of Pakchong grass cuttings. A factorial Randomized Block Design (RBD) (3 doses of cow manure and 3 doses of urea) was used with 3 replications. The first factor was the dose of cow feces (0-, 5-, and 10-tons ha-1), while the second factor was the dose of urea (100, 200, and 300 kg ha-1). The results showed that there was no interaction between cow manure and urea fertilizer on plant height, stem diameter, total leaves, number of tillers, number of tillers ready for harvest, and production of Pakchong grass cuttings. However, each factor significantly affected (p<0.05) the growth and cutting production of Pakchong grass. The use of cow manure fertilizer at a dose of 10 tons ha-1 and urea fertilizer at a dose of 300 kg ha-1 provided optimum results in increasing plant growth and the production of Pakchong grass cuttings. Abstract

Gamma-ray irradiation can induce plant mutations, resulting in stable genetic changes that persist in future generations. This study aims to assess the morphological characteristics of the potential mutant of Hedge Lucerne (Desmanthus virgatus) that has developed adaptation to high salinity conditions as a result of irradiation using gamma-ray. A total of 36 candidate mutants first generation (M1) of D. virgatus were used in this study, and they had developed adaptation to high salinity conditions (8.4 dS/m) and were observed 64 wk after planting. The collected data underwent a descriptive statistical analysis and succeeded by applying the Shapiro-Wilk test to assess the normality of the data distribution. A concentration index greater than one (>1.00) signifies a high value of the plant’s morphological characteristic. All levels of gamma irradiation groups produced an excellent survival response in the mutant candidate. The high diversity in morphological characteristics was reflected in the number of compound leaves, the width of compound leaves, and the number of leaves per pinnae, flowers, and pods. The dominant color of the lower leaves was 7.5 Green Yellow (5/6), and the middle leaves were 7.5 Green Yellow (5/6), while the dominant color of the upper leaves was 7.5 Green Yellow (6/8). The mutant candidate of D. virgatus exhibited the best characteristics, as determined by the concentration index, were those subjected to 200 Gray and 300 Gray irradiation. Fifteen superior mutant candidates were identified, namely GDV100.1, GDV100.2, GDV100.4, GDV100.5, GDV200.2, GDV200.3, GDV200.7, GDV200.9, GDV200.10, GDV300.3, GDV300.4, GDV300.5, GDV300.12, GDV300.13. and GDV 500.1. The three best mutant candidates (M1) were GDV100.2, GDV200.3, and GDV500.1. The three best mutant candidates (M1) were GDV100.2, GDV200.3, and GDV500.1.

Abstract

Pakchong elephant grass (PEG) is a super fodder with significant nutritional content and high production levels. The purpose of this research is to quantify the growth and yield of PEG through nitrogen fertilizer engineering with different dosages and repeated fertilization methods. A completely randomized design (CRD) was employed in the investigation, with 4 different levels of urea dosage (100; 200; 300; and 400 N kg/ha). And 10 replicates. ANOVA was used to evaluate the data, and Duncan's Multiple Range Test was then used to determine whether the treatments were substantially different (P<0.05). The findings demonstrated that the addition of nitrogen fertilizer at dosages of 200–400 N kg/ha was better compared to 100 N kg/ha at the end of maintenance (8 weeks after planting) for the quantity of leaves, leaf length, the height of plant, production of both fresh and dry biomass of PEG. There were no significant effect (P>0.05) in nitrogen fertilizer levels at the end of maintenance (8 weeks after planting) for leaf width, leaf chlorophyll content, stem sugar content, quantity of tillers, and the leaf-to-stem ratio of PEG. The research's conclusion indicates that adding nitrogen fertilizer up to 400 N kg/ha is generally safe and feasible for the growth and production of PEG. A nitrogen fertilizer dosage of 200 N kg/ha is optimal to meet PEG's growth and production needs.

Abstract

The lowland area of Indonesia has economic potential to develop as a major centre for dairy farming businesses. Still, there is a foremost matter: overheated irradiation immersed in damped air would increase the heat stress level. The present study was conducted to assess the heat stress tolerance level of lowland Indonesian Holstein cows, characterized by a dominant level of Black and White (B/W) pigmented skin coat. This study involved 34 heads of Holstein cows that were cared for in Eastern Jakarta. Breathing frequency (BF), rectum's warmth (RW), pulse rate (PL), white-skinned spot temperature (WSST), black-skinned spot temperature (BSST), average temperature rounded skin (ATRS), back region temperature (BRT), chest region temperature (CRT), upper-leg temperature (ULT), lower-leg temperature (LLT), skin's temperature (ST), body's temperature (BT), and heat tolerance coefficient (HTC) as variables were checked statistically with R 4.4.2 type software comprised correlation and independent t-test. Cows B/W classification performed with the imageJ 1.54g series program. Those analyses showed that most lowland Indonesian Holsteins were characterized by black-pigmented dominant cows (BDC). The pigmentation of both lateral sides of the body generated a significant correlation (p<0.05 and p<0.01) with several vital symptoms, including WSST, ATRS, ST, BT, and HTC, but only in the BDC Holstein class. The test of mean distinction between the two classes (BDC and WDC) produced statistically insignificant differences (p>0.05) in all measurable vital symptoms; all variables showed trends indicating that the BDC class had a greater response to heat stress. The BDC Holstein type selection base had high expectations of elevating the HTC score in Indonesian lowland cows, as the closing decision.
