Abstract

Abstract

Refill Drinking Water Depot workers rely on physical strength to work, so they are at risk of experiencing Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs) complaints. Based on the initial survey, 13 out of 15 workers (86.7%) experienced MSDs. This research aims to determine the relationship between individual and work factors and MSD complaints among refill drinking water depot workers in Padang City. The study used a cross-sectional design. We collected data from November 2022 to July 2023 with a sample of 83 people, selected using proportional random sampling techniques. The dependent variable in this study is complaints of Musculoskeletal Disorders (high risk if NBM score > 20). The independent variables are age (at risk ³ 35 years), work period (at risk ³ five years), smoking habits (at risk if IB values ³ 200), Working posture (at stake if REBA score ³ 7), physical workload (at risk if ³ 100 beats/minute) and BMI (at risk if < 17 and > 25). Data analysis uses univariate and bivariate analysis (chi-square test). The results of the study showed that 71.1% of workers experienced MSD complaints, 34.9% of workers with a risky age, 19.3% of workers with a problematic work period, 32.5% of workers had a smoking habit, 9.6% of workers with a risky BMI, all workers are not at risk of physical workload and 56.6% of workers work with dangerous work postures. The bivariate test results showed that there was no significant relationship between the variables age (p=0.954), years of service (p=0.192), smoking habits (p=0.233), BMI (p=0.330), and work posture (p=0.499) with complaints of MSD. There was no relationship between age, length of service, smoking habits, BMI, and work posture with MSD complaints. We recommended that business owners collaborate with the Community Health Center to provide education about ergonomics when working for refill drinking water depot workers.

Abstract

The brick-making industry is an industry with rough work that relies on the physical strength of its workers. The posture of workers when carrying out the work process is often not ergonomic, so workers are at risk of experiencing musculoskeletal disorders and discomfort due to posture when doing work that is not ergonomic and heavy physical workload because it is done manually relying on strength. This study was conducted to determine the description of MSDs complaints experienced by brickmakers and the factors influencing them. This study is a quantitative study with a cross-sectional design. Conducted from March to September 2024, with the research location in Sarilamak Village, Lima Puluh Kota Regency, West Sumatra. The study population was all workers, totaling 76 people in 35 brick production sites; the number of samples was 66 workers. Data collection was carried out using questionnaires and weight and height measuring instruments. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate analysis. The study shows that 80.3% of brick workers experience high-risk MSDs complaints. The body parts most complained about by workers during and after work are the waist, back, and calves. There is no relationship between age (p-value = 0.512), work period (p-value = 0.799), BMI (p-value = 0.191), work posture (p-value = 0.713), and workload (p-value = 0.517) with MSDs complaints in brick workers. There is no relationship between age, length of service, BMI, work posture, and workload with MSD complaints in brick workers. Business owners are expected to provide workers with ergonomic work equipment and help them improve their body position while working.

Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major infectious disease in Indonesia. Data from the Ampalu Community Health Centre in 2023 showed 93.5% service coverage for suspected TB patients (430 people), with 26 confirmed cases. However, from January to August 2024, only 33.3% of the screening target (66.7%) was achieved, revealing a gap in early detection and the need to enhance community participation. The TB Friend Action program was developed as a community-based intervention integrating education, case screening, and health information dissemination to improve knowledge, reduce stigma, and strengthen community involvement in TB control. The activity was implemented in September 2024 in Korong Palak Juha, Ampalu District, Padang Pariaman Regency, involving 48 participants from local communities and at-risk families, supported by cadres, community leaders, and community health centre staff. The intervention comprised three components: interactive outreach using lectures and the Emo-demo method, sputum collection for case screening, and the distribution of educational media (leaflets, posters, banners, and x-banners). Evaluation through pre- and post-tests, observation, and screening analysis showed a significant improvement in knowledge, with the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test yielding Z = -5.98 and p < 0.001 (pre-test 57.52 ± 14.57; post-test 68.10 ± 9.21). High community engagement was evident from active participation and the collection of 26 sputum samples for laboratory testing. The TB Friend Action effectively enhanced community understanding, reduced stigma, and fostered collaboration between communities and health workers. Integration with routine health centre programs and regional policy support is recommended to ensure sustainable TB prevention and control.

Abstract

Background: El Niño and positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) events can disrupt monsoon circulation and increase air pollution exposure in Southeast Asia, particularly PM2.5, which poses significant public health risks. Objective: This study aimed to analyze PM2.5 exposure during the 2023–2024 El Niño period and assess its potential public health risks in Southeast Asia. Methods: Daily PM2.5 concentrations in major Southeast Asian capitals during the 2023–2024 El Niño period were analyzed to evaluate temporal variability, exceedances of WHO and national standards, and potential transboundary pollution using Spearman correlation analysis. Results: Jakarta and Hanoi showed the highest daily median PM2.5 concentrations, exceeding 100 µg/m3. However, exceedances of WHO and national air quality standards occurred in almost all ASEAN capitals. Strong positive correlations were observed between Yangon and Vientiane (r = 0.753, p < 0.01), Vientiane and Bangkok (r = 0.695, p < 0.01), and Yangon and Bangkok (r = 0.670, p < 0.01), likely due to shared continental and monsoonal influences. In contrast, weaker correlations were found among maritime cities such as Jakarta, Singapore, and Kuala Lumpur because of variable sea–land circulation and tropical convection. Elevated PM2.5 concentrations during El Niño may increase respiratory and cardiovascular health risks. Conclusion: PM2.5 concentrations during the 2023–2024 El Niño period exceeded WHO and national standards in most Southeast Asian capitals, highlighting the need for cross-border mitigation strategies and integrated early warning systems to protect public health.
