Abstract

The study focused on the preservation of the Pulau Sawah Temple complex under the management of Batusangkar Historical and Archaeological Heritage Conservation Agency (SPSP) Batusangkar to the Cultural Preservation Centre (BPK) III Region West Sumatra. The temple site had previously received inadequate attention, both from the community and the local government, even though it marked the heritage of the Buddhist Malay Kingdom. The situation improved when the SPSP was established and began operations, leading to increased attention and conservation efforts for the Pulau Sawah temple complex through various stages. Through primary and secondary source research, the study found that the conservation of the Pulau Sawah temple complex has involved numerous stakeholders. Various local stakeholders, supported by the Batusangkar SPSP as the precursor to the BPK III, have played a crucial role in the preservation process. Preservation efforts are not limited to collection management but are also supported by the management of the organisational structure of the institution responsible for the site complex. Therefore, the preservation of the temple structures on Pulau Sawah, which, when examined closely, can evoke the identity of Dharmasraya, is of great value and should be passed on to future generations.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study examines the socio-cultural dynamics in a transnational marriage between a Minangkabau woman and a South Korean man. The focus of the research is directed toward three aspects: (1) challenges experienced by the couple prior to marriage; (2) post-marital life dynamics, particularly in terms of cultural adaptation, relationships with extended families, gender roles, and language; and (3) the impact of marriage on offspring. This research employs a qualitative method and applies the theory of cultural hybridization through in-depth interviews with the couple. The findings reveal that pre-marital challenges include difficulties in obtaining family approval, religious differences, differences in pre-marital rituals, legal and administrative complexities, as well as socio-psychological pressures. After marriage, the couple encounters differences in daily cultural adaptation, challenges in establishing harmonious relationships with extended families, disparities between matrilineal and patrilineal kinship systems, and language barriers. Conflicts arising from these differences can be managed through compromise, more egalitarian role-sharing, and the use of English as the primary medium of communication. In the life of the child, transnational marriage brings significant influence. The child receives education through a hybrid pattern that integrates Korean and Minangkabau values. The child becomes multilingual, mastering Indonesian, Korean, English, and Palembang, and develops a multilayered, hybrid cultural identity. In terms of citizenship, the child occupies a unique position by holding dual or even triple citizenship (the United States, Indonesia, and South Korea). In conclusion, a transnational marriage between a Minangkabau woman and a South Korean man produces a complex process of cultural hybridization, both in the marital relationship and in the formation of the child’s identity. These findings demonstrate that compromise, negotiation, and adaptive strategies are key factors in sustaining transnational marriage.

Abstract

The Port of Tuapeijat is the principal port in the Mentawai Islands Regency and serves a strategic role as the main gateway for the movement of people and goods within the archipelagic region. This study aims to examine the development of the Port of Tuapeijat from the establishment of the Mentawai Islands Regency in 1999 until 2023, analyze the flow of passengers and cargo, investigate the port management structure, and assess its contribution to regional development. The research employs the historical method, consisting of heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. Primary sources include port archives, government documents, statistical data, and interviews with port officials and local communities. Secondary sources comprise books, journal articles, theses, and other scholarly works related to maritime history and port studies. The findings reveal that the Port of Tuapeijat evolved from a timber transportation port into the main maritime hub of the Mentawai Islands. This transformation was significantly influenced by the designation of Tuapeijat as the capital of the Mentawai Islands Regency in 1999. The port has played a crucial role in logistics distribution, economic growth, transportation infrastructure development, and tourism expansion. Furthermore, it has facilitated social transformation and accelerated modernization within the archipelagic community. Therefore, the Port of Tuapeijat functions not only as a maritime transportation facility but also as a catalyst for economic growth and regional development in the Mentawai Islands.
