Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine students’ perception of teacher talk in English teaching learning process in the fifth semester at English education study program during the COVID-19 pandemic. This research is quantitative research, using survey research. The population in this study were 172 students from class A, B, C, D, and class Pare-Pare who used voluntary sampling. Data collection techniques through the distribution of questionnaires. Data were analyzed by descriptive analysis. The results showed that student’s perception of teacher talk in the teaching and learning process of Fifth Semesters at English Education Study Program during COVID-19 Pandemic was in positive classification. The conclusion, students were enthusiastic with the Teacher Talk that applied by the teacher in English Teaching learning Process.

Abstract

This study aimed to find out the perceptions of SMA IT Wahdah Islamiyah Makassar’s Teachers and Students about Critical Thinking in the learning process. The researcher used a qualitative method. The population of this research are 120 students from four classes, which are XI IPA 3, XI IPA 2, XII IPA 3 and XI IPS 2 in academic year 2020-2021, also 2 English teachers at SMA IT Wahdah Islamiyah. The sample for this research is 39 students that were selected purposively by filling out questionnaires and providing opinions and examples of critical thinking that they know, so that the results of the questionnaire can be used to see their basic knowledge about critical thinking, it is intended that the sample who conducts an interview has an idea or basic knowledge about critical thinking. This study use interview to support the research and technique of data analysis by Miles and Huberman. The result of data analysis showed that English teachers’ perceptions about critical thinking is that critical thinking are the ability to make a summary, give opinion, evaluate the information and also the ability to think rationally about what to do/believe the information/ideas. While students’ perceptions about critical thinking are that critical thinking are thinking logically, confirming, and validating the correctness of an information, and the ability to solve a problem. Teachers’ perceptions of students’ ability to think critically can be seen from the activities that occur in the classroom and factors that become problems for students in thinking critically in the classroom. Students’ perceptions of their ability to think critically can be seen from their role in applying critical thinking in the classroom. Teachers' perceptions of their role in integrating critical thinking in the lesson is encouraging students to make questions or give conclusions from the material that provided by the teacher. Students’ perceptions of their role in integrating critical thinking in the lesson can be seen from two categories, such as the problem that the students faced when they are trying to think critically in the classroom and the classroom situation. The statements above are supported by the results of in-depth interviews through focus group discussion.

Abstract

The purposes of this research were to determine levels, causes, and solution of students’ speaking anxiety in EFL classroom. This research used a mixed-method research. The researchers chose the class of eleventh grade students of senior high school 5 Makassar. The instruments to collect the data were FLCAS questionnaire and semi-structured interview. The results of this research showed that most of the students at “mildly anxious” level with 16 respondents. There are 3 respondents who have “very anxious” level, 11 respondents have “anxious” level, and the last 5 respondents are in “relaxed” level. The researchers found there are five causes which are found by the researchers in this research, they are: fear of mistakes, lack of self-confidence, limited vocabulary, negative evaluation from teacher or friend, and embarrassment (afraid of being laughed). This research also showed that there are six solutions which are found by the researchers in this research, they are: using English websites, watching English films, speaking with native speakers, positive thinking, memorizing more English vocabulary, and others (calm down and ignoring the people).

Abstract

The goal of the objectives of this article was to see how far some of the clustering can improve students' writing skills. In this work, a quasi-experimental approach was adopted. the method with a sample size of 40 people, 20 from 20 participants in the experimental group from the control group. The research came to the conclusion that students a part of the experimental group who were taught using the clustering method were better than the control sample of students who were taught the conventional way. This is evidenced by the as an alternative (Ho) is accepted, while the absence of a hypothesis (HI) is rejected after applying the post-test when higher than or equal to the t-table value, the test is t-tested formula is used. The meaning of the application of grouping has a significant impact on students' writing skills at MA Pi DDI Mangkoso.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the development of students’ critical reading comprehension through short stories. The method used a quantitative design with a pre-experimental research design with a sample of 29 students from class XI MIA using a cluster random sampling technique. In obtaining the data, the researchers used the pre-test as an instrument. The results of the data analysis showed that by using short stories, the students’ critical reading comprehension developed. It can be proven by the t-test value was lower than P (0.000 < 0.05) which means that H0 this research was rejected and H1 was accepted. So, it can be concluded that the use of short stories develops students’ critical reading comprehension among the eleventh-grade students of SMA Negeri 8 Selayar.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the effectiveness of online learning in speaking classes at the State University of Makassar using digital technology as a research variable to find out what types of technology can support the online learning process in speaking courses. This research uses qualitative research methods using interviews and questionnaires as research instruments to be able to determine the effectiveness of learning speaking in online learning. Interviews were conducted with several speaking lecturers in the English department. Meanwhile, the questionnaire was given to several students majoring in English at the Faculty of Languages and Literature. Based on the results of the research by using interviews with lecturers as respondents, various answers were found but resulted in the same point, that is the ineffectiveness of learning speaking English in online learning as well as the results of the questionnaire, where the dominant students answered that learning English speaking was not effective using the online learning method.

Abstract

This study aims to determine students' perceptions of class 2020 of the English Education Study Program of Universitas Negeri Makassar about the use of translanguaging in the English teaching-learning process. The researcher used a mixed-method research design (quantitative-qualitative), using a questionnaire and interview to collect the data. The sample questionnaire is 165 participants taken by voluntary sampling technique and five participants for the interview taken by purposive sampling technique. The data analysis from the questionnaire revealed that the student had positive perceptions about the lecturer's use of translanguaging, as evidenced by a mean score of 36.41 and classified as positive because it helped them to have a better understanding and participated better and more efficiently in the lesson, and the student has moderate perceptions about their own translanguaging practices, as evidenced by a mean score of 17.27 and classified as moderate. The questionnaire result indicated that students have moderate to positive attitudes overall. The result of the interview showed that five students responded positively to the practice of translanguaging. Based on the interview result, the student perceived that when translanguaging occurred in the classroom, the English teaching-learning process was efficient because most students understood the material given better, participated actively, and were motivated to improve their English skills.
