Abstract

This study applies Yule's theory to evaluate the use of deixis in the lyrics of Sam Smith's song "Love Goes," which appears on his album "Love Goes." 'Deixis' is derived from the Greek word deiknymi, which literally translates as "to demonstrate" or "to point out." In this case, it is employed to draw attention to the elements of the speech that are pertinent to the current context. According to the research, the many types of deixis, their meanings, and why they are utilized in specific song lyrics are explained. The writer explores the numerous sorts of deixis that may be derived by listening to and reading song lyrics from Sam Smith's album "Love Goes," which is based on the descriptive qualitative technique. In the next section, the writer identifies and categorizes the deixis that can be found in song lyrics. The writer's next step is to conduct an analysis of the data, which is supported by Yule's theory at this point. The writer discovered deixis types such as person deixis, geographical deixis, and temporal deixis after examining all of the data from Sam Smith's song lyrics from the "Love Goes" album. All of the tracks on the "Love Goes" album feature 486 deixis per person, 41 deixes per spatial location, and 44 deixis per time. Each of the three forms of person deixis has its own classification: first-person, second-person, and third-person. The first person deixis is employed in order to identify the person who is speaking. This song uses the second person deixis to convey the addresser's identity, which in this case happens to be his girlfriend in the song. The third person deixis is supposed to show an undetermined referent; nevertheless, in this album, it alludes to the persons who are in the immediate vicinity of the singer and his love interest. Spatial deixis is used in every song to identify the location of a participant in a speech event to which the singer or speaker belongs, whereas temporal deixis is used to signify a specific time period that the singer or speaker has lived through or experienced. Abstract

Some song lyrics may have been banned or rescheduled for their radio and television broadcasts. Those song lyrics were claimed to propagandize negative contents. Recently West Java Broadcasting Commission has regulated the broadcast of 17 western songs for the prejudice of negative contents. Based on semantic analysis of those song lyrics, the authors finally found out that they qualitatively describe lust, profanity, drug and alcohol abuse, etc. through periphrasis, simile, litotes, meiosis, and other speech figures. Clauses were selected to deliver the figures of speech of the lyrics sung by mostly male singers and the male-female duets in pop and r and b music genres.

Abstract

Spoken communication demands the students' intelligible pronunciation of English speech sounds since unintelligible pronunciation hampers successful communication. However, the pronunciation of English speech sounds is problematic for many EFL learners even after years of learning English. The pronunciation problem is more complex when the speech sounds occur in a text. This is because, in an English class, the focus of pronunciation practice is usually on isolated words, phrases and sentences. Thus, they find difficulties when they apply the words, phrases, and sentences in a text. This study focused on teaching English diphthongs using the text-based approach. It investigated how text-based teaching can enhance the EFL students’ mastery to pronounce English diphthongs in a text. This study is an experimental design, comparing two groups of students’ pronunciation competence taught with genre/text-based approach and conventional approach. The research results revealed the effectiveness of text-based teaching since there was a significant difference in the students' competence taught with text-based teaching compared to those taught with the conventional method. Drilling techniques which were also applied played a vital role in the pronunciation practice. Based on the conclusion above, it is recommended that English teachers apply the text-based approach and drilling techniques as an alternative strategy to teach English diphthongs.

Abstract

The current study investigated Bimbos Song lyric entitled Belalang in a Discourse Perspective. It has come to be known that Bimbo is a senior music group, specializing in deep philosophical touches of romantic songs. Belalang is a song attempting to create an analog of an insect (mantis) with special mating behaviors to human love affairs tied in dangerous wedlock. The lyric was analyzed in two ways, (1) to find out the field, tenor and mode of the discourse, employing the analytical framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) in a macro sense, and (2) to find out the eco-psychological phenomena, employing the analytical framework of eco-psychology. The findings show that both mantis (with its special mating behavior) and humans (in showing true love to the destructive wife) have a similar patternto preserve the ecosystem or in other words to create a conducive environment. The moral teaching seems to support the old saying that to love does not necessarily own despite the presence of love-chemistry. A seemingly peaceful marital life has to come to its end due to an unexpected mystical curse of Bahu Laweyan. Yet, secondary love can be made possible in search of peaceful lives, to avoid self-destruction.

Abstract

The data were analyzed using a reference (pragmatic inference). The research findings reveal the following. First, the characters in Paranorman use four kinds of impoliteness strategies. They are bald on record, positive, negative, and sarcastic. Second, each impoliteness strategy has its own representation. Direct, clear, and unambiguous statements are used to express impoliteness. Positive impoliteness occurs as disassociating from others, calling the other names, and using  taboo words. Negative impoliteness occurs as condescending, scorning, or ridiculing the other. Sarcasm or mock politeness is only performed by using insincere politeness. This is the most representation. Third, the movie shows three responses, namely no response, accepting, and countering the face attack. Countering a face attack has two parts, namely offensive and defensive. Keywords: impoliteness strategy, negative impoliteness, positive impolitenessAbstrak. Abstract

This study aims to reveal hybridity and liminality in Jhumpa Lahiri's short story entitled A Temporary Matter. This research is a qualitative research with a postcolonial approach. The theory used in this research is postcolonialism theory by Homi K. Bhabha. The methods applied in this study include data collection methods and data analysis methods. The data obtained were taken from the speech of the characters and the narrator in the short story A Temporary Matter. Bhabha in The Location of Culture (1994) discusses hybridity in society during the post-colonial era and is applied to diaspora literature. Hybridity is related to human culture and identity. Culture and identity are formed dynamically, they experience development, progress, and decline according to conditions and circumstances. Diaspora literature is produced from the writings of people living outside the country and/or writings that contain diaspora experiences. In the process of hybridity, there is a gap between the two cultures. The gap is called liminality in which there is repression of the (colonial) past that is not revealed. One of the writers included into the category of diaspora writers is Jhumpa Lahiri. In A Temporary Matter, she shows the hybridity experienced by the two main characters of Indian descent living in the United States. They were husband and wife; Shukumar and Shoba. They experienced cultural adaptation to cultures outside India. In their lives, cultural mixing occurs. This mixture is seen in the food, clothing, and language they use. Between these mixtures, several gaps fill the transition. This is found in the main character's utterances.

Abstract

Studies about rhetorical moves in the introduction section have been widely conducted. However, the studies focusing on the research problem statement is still limited. This current study investigated the rhetorical structures, strategies, and linguistic features of the problem statement written by undergraduate students, which aimed to contribute to the teaching model in teaching academic writing. This research was a qualitative case study belonging to genre analysis, using Swale’s CARS model. Thirty undergraduate students’ problem statement texts were explored, and interviewers were further conducted to collect the data. The results indicated that nine types of rhetorical structures were employed, most of which were characterized as incomplete. The rhetorical strategies employed by the students were making a centrality claim, making topic generalizations, reviewing previous research, indicating a gap, establishing need and problem, continuing a tradition, outlining purposes, and announcing the state of the present research. Specific linguistic features were used in each move and step although the students admitted that they had lack of knowledge with linguistic features. Based on the research finding, a Critical Genre-Based model for teaching problem statements in writing is proposed because this model has facilitative effect on consciousness-raising of the genre’s rhetorical structure.
