Abstract

The purpose of this research is to study English learning using nature-based learning methods to increase students' motivation in learning. In the minds of some students there is still a paradigm that assumes that success in learning English is due to talent. This assumption encourages students to be lazy to learn English. They tend to be more desperate and give up when they encounter difficulties in learning. However, learning English can be done anywhere and anytime using any method. The goal is that students can be motivated to develop learning that is more interesting and has a positive impact. The learning environment makes students broader in thinking and expression. The benefits of environment-based media allow students to better understand natural phenomena that occur in everyday life. Utilization of the environment makes the learning process more meaningful with the outdoor model. Students can explore the natural environment and learn practical skills to understand and appreciate aspects of environmental life. Learning activities will be more interesting for students. In addition, the use of the environment encourages an increase in student learning activities using nature-based learning methods

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyze the optimism dimensions and impacts of optimism found in the main characters in Interstellar, a movie by Christopher Nolan released in 2014. A descriptive qualitative method with a content analysis method was employed in this study. The data were collected using a literary study technique from the movie conversation. The data were analyzed using the optimism theory suggested by Seligman (2006). The results revealed that the optimistic dimensions found in this movie consist of permanence or immortality, pervasiveness, and personalization. These values are viewed as having impacts on the other movie characters, which reduces the attitude of pessimism and prejudice as well as leads experience to an optimistic stance. The findings imply that optimism values influence people to act, or even change their perspectives. A much deeper investigation of another crucial value in this movie is recommended as a reflection of the current literary works.

Abstract

As the effort to provide a pedagogical input for the development of teacher education of English as a foreign language in Indonesia, this paper aims to reveal the verb nature of Indonesian students majoring in English education program. To obtain the purpose of study, a qualitative research approach and a text-analysis method were employed. As the participants, four second-year students and six third-year counterparts participated in this study. The participants were given five argumentative-essay questions to answer. Overall, more than 90% of verbs of each participant were already accurate while the rest were still incorrect. The verb errors of both groups were not only evaluated based on the formal grammar perspective but also were further discussed based on the functional perspective. The findings of this study reveals that there is a different tendency between both analyzed data sets. The second-year students tended to make errors in missing ‘be’ either in relational and material clauses. In comparison, the third-year counterparts had the tendency to make errors in subject-verb agreement in material clauses. Based on the findings, it is expected that there will be different emphases of teaching grammar especially verbs for different levels of Indonesian students majoring in English education.

Abstract

The research object chosen in the film Mulan is because the narrative contained in the film Mulan discusses things that are very closely related to the phenomenon of patriarchal culture as is often the case in Indonesian society today. In this thesis there is a problem formulation, namely how patriarchal culture was formed and also the causes of the emergence of patriarchal culture in the film Mulan. Patriarchy is a structure that places men at the center compared to women. Patriarchal culture places women in a second position with limitations and is not allowed to exceed men's position as the main actor. This research is a qualitative descriptive method obtained through literature study. The conclusion of this thesis is that the writer concludes that Mulan's character in her behavior is able to fight discrimination and obstacles imposed on women by showing behavior as a leader, responsible, independent and brave enough to take risks. The writer hopes that similar research can use other approaches such as a feminist perspective and for filmmakers the writer hopes to raise the issue of gender equality so that it can help in building public awareness of the importance of gender equality.

Abstract

This study examines the impact of the debate technique on improving English public speaking skills among college students learning English as a foreign language. Conducting a Classroom Action Research (CAR) with 38 participants over 12 weeks, the researchers identified initial deficiencies in speaking abilities such as vocabulary, pronunciation, and fluency, highlighted by students' anxiety and low confidence. The intervention, implemented in two cycles, utilized British Parliamentary debate formats to develop critical thinking, argumentation, and public speaking proficiency. Results demonstrated substantial enhancement, increasing from 44.74% to 94.74% in students meeting required competency benchmarks, specifically being able to master public speaking with scores exceeding the passing grade. The findings affirm that debate techniques significantly foster confidence, fluency, and overall speaking abilities. This research highlights the importance of dynamic teaching methods in developing effective communicators in a globalized context. Keywords: Public Speaking; Debate; Classroom Action Research
