Abstract

Traditional communities have long been recognized as actors practicing nature-friendly behaviors. They are commonly deemed the champion of sustainable lifestyles. Since the 1980s, there has been a call to learn the so-called Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) embraced by traditional communities. One of the reasons is that the issues of climate crises should be addressed and tackled from various corners. This article attempts to delineate a TEK, an ecological ritual practiced by the traditional community living on the island of Sumba. The ritual, called WHL (warung hupu liku, which means giving the rope tips back [to nature]), could give us an idea of how the community perceives their relationship with natural surroundings, which in turn, exposes their ecological ethics. Primary research data were collected through interviews with four experts of Sumbanese culture/environmental activists and two ritual speakers (wunang). The research reveals that WHL ritual portrays the Sumbanese’s worldview of the human-nature relationship. WHL gives an idea of the Sumbanese ecological ethics, covering reciprocity with nature, mutual respect, modesty in consumption, and sustainable use of natural resources. Because Indonesia is rich in TEK, this time-enduring knowledge and practice should be exposed as a valuable contribution to ecological discourses and policies. The discussion on Sumbanese WHL suggests that traditional and modern approaches could work in tandem to address current environmental issues.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to develop a web-based virtual assistant chatbot using AIML (Artificial Intelligence Markup Language) as a media to share information of student organization activities. The Virtual assistant is developed with chatbot capabilities by applying AIML. Combining Chatbot with AIML enables virtual assistants to understand and respond the users more effectively and efficiently. Chatbot technology in a web-based virtual assistant system can help the student organization to get information of organizational activities. The AIML used in the chatbot system allows users to interact like humans talk. Designing the system is done firstly by creating a knowledge base using AIML. The voice API is used to convert the knowledge base into an audio stream, which involves a text to speech conversion process. Both processes were initiated using the O-master programming tool. The next process integrates the knowledge base and voice into the php code using JavaScript. The system involves designing a user interface and avatars for interaction with users. The system serves the results of knowledge base searching and plays the conversion of the voice using script-to-voice code. The last step is integrating the chatbot into the hologram system. The hologram system utilizes a four-sided prism. The result shows that the system can help students to obtain information in student organization activities interactively.

Abstract

The problem of plastic waste is being addressed in a variety of ways, ranging from manual waste sorting to reverse vending machines. On the other side, businesses are becoming increasingly concerned about waste management. Several ways to producing reverse vending machines have been tested, including the use of plastic sensors. However, the findings were unsatisfactory due to imprecise detection. This study looks into the use of ESP32-Cam combined with machine learning for high-precision plastic bottle detection in reverse vending machines. It is envisioned that high-precision plastic bottle detection would be used in reverse vending machines. It is intended that by providing an incentive for each identified plastic bottle, people will be motivated to collect plastic bottles and deposit them into reverse vending machines, thereby supporting digital humanities through enhanced waste management practices.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the influence of formal sensory aesthetics in encouraging ecological behavior among visitors at PVJ Sky Garden mall, Bandung, in the form of a model. Environmental damage is becoming increasingly uncontrollable due to human behavior that is not environmentally friendly, one of which is in the city of Bandung. Therefore, efforts are needed to encourage the community to adopt ecological behaviors through intensive green roof facilities. In addition to the ecological role of green roofs, aesthetics play an important role in influencing behavior. This occurs through the reciprocal relationship between aesthetics and behavior. The theory of aesthetics and ecological behavior is analyzed into a proposition model, then used as the basis for the research framework and tested on mall visitors. Qualitative research method with a case study approach by Robert K. Yin, through direct observation to observe aesthetics and behavior, questionnaire surveys on mall visitors and experts, interviews, and expert validation to deepen and develop data on the model. The research findings consist of a sensory formal aesthetic model that can influence the ecological behavior of visitors. The aesthetic aspects, which consist of elements of environmental education, spaces for cultural gatherings, designs resembling the original nature that evoke a sense of leisure, and the selection of local materials, play an important role in influencing the ecological behavior of visitors to the PVJ Sky Garden Mall.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the influence of the sensory formal aesthetics of green roofs in encouraging ecological behavior. Jakarta's ecological crisis stems from lack of green spaces and unfriendly community behavior. Optimizing green roofs and appealing to aesthetics can stimulate environmental protection efforts. Qualitative approach with Robert K. Yin's case study method to propose a model proposition based on the influence of aesthetics on ecological behavior, testing it on mall visitors. Data collection through observation, surveys, semi-structured interviews, and expert validation. The research findings regarding the formal sensory aesthetics of the Central Market green roof can influence the ecological behavior of visitors as demonstrated in the model. Aesthetics with the goal of environmental education within it, influence behavior through the understanding of sustainability in its design and facilities. The relationship between aesthetics and ecological behavior includes experiences of returning to nature, feelings of connection with nature, and environmental knowledge media, which influence environmental awareness and ecological behavior. Visitor characteristics, duration, and frequency of visits also influence the ecological behaviors that occur and sensory perceptions of aesthetics. This study emphasizes the role of education in aesthetics to influence ecological behavior, through relationships in form of experiences, feelings and environmental knowledge.
