Abstract

BACKGROUND: The relationship between periodontitis and venous thromboembolism (VTE) remains controversial. Some studies show an association, while others do not show an association between periodontitis and VTE. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to determine the relationship between periodontitis and the risk of VTE using a meta-analysis approach. METHODS: A meta-analysis study, registered in PROSPERO, was conducted from August to September 2024. The sources for article searches in this study were Scopus, Embase, and PubMed. Data on the proportion of VTE occurrences in the periodontitis and non-periodontitis groups were collected from each article, and pooled point estimates were calculated using the Mantel-Haenszel test. RESULTS: We identified 40,397 VTE cases and 2,215,063 controls from six articles. Among these six articles, three showed an association between periodontitis and an increased risk of VTE. Additionally, we identified one article reporting that periodontitis was associated with a decreased risk of VTE. Furthermore, two articles revealed that periodontitis had no association with VTE occurrence. Our calculations using the Mantel-Haenszel test showed that, overall, an increased risk of VTE was found in individuals with periodontitis compared to those without (RR: 1.61; 95% CI: 1.09 – 2.39; Egger's p: 0.7917; Heterogeneity p: <0.0001; p: 0.0200). CONCLUSION: We have identified that periodontitis is an important factor in the occurrence of VTE.

Abstract

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Glaucoma can lead to irreversible blindness, but normotension glaucoma (NTG) often shows no early symptoms. However, to date, there is limited knowledge regarding the potential parameters for early detection. Therefore, in this study, various metabolic parameters and biomarkers which may contribute to NTG in metabolic syndrome (MetS) patients were evaluated.METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted in the National Cardiac Center Harapan Kita Hospital. Mets were confirmed following the IDF criteria. NTG was determined based on normal intraocular pressure (IOP) with a mean defect (MD) of the visual field, thinning of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), and enlargement of cup disc ratio (CDR) by ocular coherence tomography (OCT). Metabolic parameters results of waist circumference (WC), body weight, body height, body mass index (BMI), blood pressures, HbA1c, fasting blood glucose (FBG), lipid profiles; and biomarkers including thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), leptin, adiponectin, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), and endothelin-1 (ET-1) were analyzed. Statistical analysis was performed using comparative and correlative tests.RESULTS: From 29 subjects, 19 subjects (65.5%) were included in the NTG group and 10 subjects (34.5%) were included in the non-NTG group. In the NTG group, we found significant correlation between MD with systolic blood pressure (p=0.035); CDR with ET-1 (p=0.049); and CDR with adiponectin (p=0.010). The non-NTG group had a significant correlation between MD with BMI (p=0.043); CDR with LDL (p=0.042); and CDR with TG (p=0.031).CONCLUSION: There are correlation between adiponectin and ET-1 with NTG in MetS patients. Therefore, they might be considered as potential early detectors for NTG in MetS patients.KEYWORDS: normal tension glaucoma, metabolic syndrome, biomarker, endothelin-1, adiponectin

Abstract

ABSTRACT Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS), as the acute manifestation of Coronary Heart Disease (CHD), remains a major contributor to global morbidity and mortality, accounting for 85% of deaths from heart attacks and strokes (Universitas Muhammadiyah Magelang, 2025). In Indonesia, while the specific CHD prevalence was reported at 0.85% in 2023 (SKI, 2023), the incidence of ACS cases is high, exemplified by 840 cases reported in the ED of NCCHK Jakarta (January–May 2025). Recurrent ACS is a serious threat, primarily driven by poor patient adherence to secondary prevention regimens (Universitas Muhammadiyah Magelang, 2025) and atherosclerosis progression(Universitas Hasanuddin, 2025). This is compounded by profound physical (chronic fatigue, pain) and psychological impacts (anxiety, PTSD) (Jackson, 2021; Lee & Chen, 2023). Given the complexity of medication management challenges (Smith, 2021) and the need for holistic healthcare support (Brown, 2020), this study aims to explore the subjective experiences and preventive behaviors of patients facing recurrent ACS. Method: This qualitative study utilized an exploratory phenomenological approach to describe preventive behaviors and analyze risk factors for recurrent heart attacks in ACS patients. Results: Five key themes were identified: 1) Physical Impact, including chest pain, weakness, and reduced functional capacity. 2) Psychosocial Impact, encompassing anxiety, fear, restlessness, and thoughts of death. 3) Post-Attack Medication Management, highlighting adherence barriers and treatment ineffectiveness due to irregular medication consumption. 4) Behavioral Changes, involving the adoption of positive healthy behaviors. 5) Healthcare Support, indicating a strong need for more optimal, comprehensive, and continuous health education from healthcare providers. Conclusion: The study identifies five core themes detailing the complex post-recurrent ACS experience, dominated by significant physical and psychological burdens. Non-adherence to treatment exacerbates this experience, underscoring the necessity for more holistic, patient-centered healthcare support.  Keywords: Patient, Experience, Recurrent ACS     ABSTRAK Sindrom Koroner Akut (SKA), sebagai manifestasi akut Penyakit Jantung Koroner (PJK), merupakan kontributor signifikan terhadap morbiditas dan mortalitas global, menyumbang 85% kematian akibat serangan jantung dan stroke (Universitas Muhammadiyah Magelang, 2025).
