Abstract

Soaking Gerbera Cut Flowers (Gerbera jamesonii) in a Mix of Coconut Water Solution and Wuluh Starfruit Extract to Extend Vase Life Gerbera is a flowering ornamental plant that is used as cut flowers and has high economic and aesthetic value. Gerbera flowers are often damaged such as wilting, easily broken stems, broken buds and flower discoloration. The very short shelf life of cut gerbera flowers requires proper postharvest handling to maintain freshness. This research aims to determine the effect of coconut water (Cocos nucifera) and wuluh starfruit (Averrhoa bilimbi) extract and its interaction in increasing vase life and to determine the best soaking solution dose for gerbera cut flowers. The research used a Completely Randomized Design consisting of two factors, that is coconut water with doses of K1: 40 ml, K2: 60 ml, and K3: 80 ml, and wuluh starfruit extract with doses of B1: 10 ml, B2: 20 ml, and B3: 30 ml, there were 9 treatment combinations and each treatment was repeated three times. The results showed that the interaction between coconut water and wuluh starfruit extract had a significant effect on the solution acidity and vase life variables. Treatment of 80 ml coconut water + 10 ml star fruit extract (K3B1) was able to maintain the appearance of gerbera cut flowers in a vase up to 13,83 days.

Abstract

Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) is a type of ornamental plant that has considerable potential to be used as a commercial cut flower. For this reason, it is necessary to add nutrients in the form of organic and inorganic fertilizers. The application of organic fertilizers in plant cultivation can improve plant growth media and as a source of macro and micro nutrients. The use of organic fertilizers is also important for ornamental plants in affecting the quality of flowers and flower vase life. This study aims to determine the effect of the type and dose of fertilizer on the growth of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) and to determine the effect of the type and dose of fertilizer on the postharvest quality of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.). The design of this study used a factorial randomized block design (RBD) with 2 factors. The first factor was the type of organic fertilizer consisting of 3 levels and the second factor was the dose given which consisted of 4 levels repeated three times. The selected manure has been composted for approximately 28 days. The results showed that chicken manure had a better effect than cow manure and goat manure. As for the dose treatment, it was found that the dose of P3 manure (dose of 211.95 gr) had the best effect on plant height and vase life variables of sunflowers.

Abstract

Microgreens are young seedlings of edible vegetables, herbs, and flowers. Growing media plays a vital role in plant growth and the biosynthesis of multiple metabolites that improve the nutritional profile of microgreen. This study evaluated the effect of growing media from a combination of soil, husk charcoal, and perlite with a specific ratio of 1:1:1 (TAP 111), 2:1:1 (TAP 211), 1:2:1 (TAP 121), and 1:1:2 (TAP 112) on the nutrition profile and fresh weight of several microgreen plants, including water spinach, red spinach, green mustard, red lettuce, green spinach, and bok choy. The nutrient contents of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium in the growing media were quantified in this study. The data analysis was performed using Duncan’s multiple range test to assess the quantity of vitamin A, vitamin C, antioxidant capacity, and fresh weight at a 5% confidence level. The results showed that TAP121 media exhibited moderate levels of nitrogen (0.23%), very high phosphorus (238.68 ppm), and high potassium (324.69 ppm. The highest vitamin A was found in red spinach in TAP111 (27.77 mg 100 g-1) and TAP112 (22.72 mg 100 g-1) media. The highest vitamin C was found in green mustard in TAP111 media (66.44 mg 100 g-1) and in bok choy in TAP112 media (61.25 mg 100 g-1). The highest antioxidant capacity was found in Bok choy in TAP121 media (386.4 mg AAEAC 1000 g-1) and the highest fresh weight was found in water spinach in  TAP121 media (4.03 g). In conclusion, TAP121 media can be recommended to support the balanced growth and nutritional quality of microgreen plants, especially bok choy, and water spinach. This study provides insights into how specific combinations of growing media can enhance the growth and nutritional content of microgreens. Future studies could focus on optimizing nutrient levels and environmental conditions to maximize the antioxidant properties and other bioactive compounds in microgreens.

Abstract

Market demand for baby romaine lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. var. longifolia) continues to rise alongside the public’s growing preference for healthy lifestyles, yet its productivity still needs improvement. This study aims to evaluate the effect of seedling density per planting hole on the growth and yield of baby romaine lettuce using the Deep Flow Technique (DFT) hydroponic system and to determine the optimal number of seedlings. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse in Pelaga Village, Bali, using a completely randomized design (CRD) with a single factor comprising five seedling densities (1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 seedlings per hole) and six replications, totaling 120 plants.  Growth and yield parameters were analyzed using ANOVA and LSD at a 5% significance level, with regression applied to fresh shoot and crop weight. Results showed that increasing the number of seedlings significantly affected plant height, stem diameter, chlorophyll content, fresh and dry shoot weight, and total fresh biomass. Shoot fresh weight increased linearly (Y = 97.86 + 11.71X; R² = 0.975), while crop fresh weight followed a quadratic trend (Y = 70.64 + 8.10X – 1.00X²; R² = 0.863), with the optimal yield obtained at three seedlings per hole. It is concluded that planting three seedlings per hole offers the best outcome in terms of both quality and quantity in a DFT hydroponic system.
