Abstract

Abstract: As a product of mass media, news photograph is an image which provides the viewers with a valuable source of information and news story. All events captured in photographs turn into a news photo. Besides covering the news with fact, news photographs do not only have surface meanings, but also deeper meanings to be interpreted by each viewer. The phenomenon of demonstration, particularly the massive demonstration in Egypt in 2011, offers a good chance to discover how visual messages have been presented to guide interpretation of foreign news events. Principally, demonstration is an expression of the people’s voices, and thus, their voices are related closely with their demands, grievances and wishes related to the new government. Here, the photographs are able to portray and reflect the people’s voices through the compositions and contents (meanings) involved in the photos. This study is aimed at discovering the portrayal of the voice of the people (the protesters) in the news photographs of the Indonesian online newspaper, The Jakarta Globe. The data consist of 15 news photographs taken from The Jakarta Globe online newspaper published in January – October 2011. The study employs qualitative method framed with semiotic analysis using Roland Barthes’ theory of orders of signification and photographic message. The results of the study show that The Jakarta Globe visually constructs this event (demonstration) by focusing on the human action (the protesters). Thus, the voice of the people is portrayed in the photo subjects (the protesters) and the included objects of the photo. Meanwhile, the technical aspects of the photos play a meaningful role in emerging the portrayal of the people’s voice. There are four voices revealed by the people in the 15 photographs, namely the voice of freedom, the voice of peace, the voice of justice and the voice of human rights. The photo text including headlines and captions also interact with photographs to produce meaning in supporting the people’s voices. The headlines tend to explain the people’s voices implicitly, while the captions tend to explain the people’s voices explicitly. Abstract

This article delineates a case study investigating the development of levels of reflection encapsulated in reflective teaching practice of four Indonesian EFL pre-service teachers during their field teaching. Data were garnered mainly through their reflective teaching journals and were analysed using thematic analysis technique to identify the emerging themes in level of reflection and to extract their narratives of experience. The findings indicated that regarding framework of level of reflection, the EFL pre-service teachers’ level of reflectivity is mostly in the range of dialogic reflection Level 3 and dialogic reflection Level 4. Within the range of dialogic reflection, the pre-service teachers revealed the ability to further describe, analyse and evaluate their instructional practices. No one, however, indicated the quality of critical reflection since it requires more experiences as invested in time and field teaching exposure.

Abstract

Washback refers to influences of testing on teaching and learning. In Thailand and Indonesia, washback of the Ordinary National Educational Test (O-NET) and Ujian Nasional (UN) inevitably occurs on teaching and learning in classrooms at every level. This present study aims to explore and compare the washback effects of the O-NET and UN on English language learning as perceived by Thai and Indonesian ninth-grade students. It is a multi-case study (Thailand case and Indonesia case) by using triangulation design as the research design. The questionnaires concerning washback effects of national exams on English language learning were distributed to 200 ninth-graders in the two cases. In addition, six students from each case were interviewed. The results reveal that in both cases, the participants focus to learn on contents and skills that were likely to appear in the national exams. The participants learned English harder to perform well in the tests rather than to improve their English ability. Moreover, the students had high anxiety during the test preparations and feared for low O-NET and UN scores. The results of the study contribute to future washback study and improvement of English language teaching and learning at ninth-grade in Thailand and Indonesia.

Abstract

Assessment as an essential part of teaching and learning might be perceived differently by teachers, whereas teachers' conception of assessment influences strategies and implementation of assessment. The International Baccalaureate curriculum is one of the international curricula widely used with its own assessment principles and implementation. This research aims to explore how teachers in IB secondary schools perceive English assessment in IB curriculum. By implementing a mixed-method approach, six teachers from five different IB secondary schools and two teachers from one IB secondary school participated in the questionnaire and interview. From the data, this research revealed that teachers perceive English assessment in IB curriculum as a valid and reliable means to improve teaching and learning, school accountability, and student accountability. The teachers also believe IB curriculum objectives have been well embedded in the English assessment process. Although the teachers have a positive perception of the assessment process in IB curriculum, several challenges are found, primarily in giving an authentic and personalized assessment. To solve the challenges, the teachers collaborate and share about the assessment practices they conducted in classes. Further research can be done to explore the perception of English assessment in IB curriculum from the students' point of view.

Abstract

Assessing students' performance is an essential part of a teacher's job. Hence, they are believed to be familiar with various kinds of assessments, especially classroom-based assessments (henceforth CBA). Language teaching and assessment are two interrelated that affect each other to a great extent. Undoubtedly, language assessment becomes a more complicated activity in the field of language teaching. The major objective of this study was to describe how EFL secondary teachers’ self-perceived on the basic principles of assessment and their own practice in CBA. This study was conducted in the form of a descriptive survey research. Shim's (2009) survey instrument was adapted to collect data and gathered using an online survey. 48 respondents willingly fulfilled the online survey containing 80 statements concerning classroom assessment procedures. The data obtained were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The findings of the current study revealed that teachers seemed to practice assessment for learning (henceforth AfL), in which most teachers conducted assessments to support students’ learning and used the results as feedback to improve and revise their teaching. The teachers in this study appeared to be literate and excellent in understanding the concept and using it in practice. However, a question remains as to whether their classroom practice was excellent. Since most studies have largely reported results on teacher's assessment literacy (henceforth TAL), future programs and research should be directed toward classroom-based research on how the CBAL can improve students' learning and improve the quality of teacher instructions. The implications of the result are expected to provide a clear understanding and theoretical foundations of CBAL.

Abstract

There is a need to build rapport in classroom interaction since it influences the language learning process. To build rapport, EFL teacher needs to conduct several activities. By providing a self-assessment, the EFL teacher can monitor and evaluate their own teaching to fulfill the needs of building rapport in classroom. However, any researchers have not developed the instrument of teacher’s self-assessment of rapport building in EFL classroom. Therefore, this study was established to fill the need of self-assessment instrument for building rapport in classroom by constructing a self-assessment for teacher in building rapport in EFL classroom. By applying design research from a curriculum perspective, the results revealed a self-assessment instrument of maintaining rapport for EFL teacher consisted of eleven sections with 35 statements. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficient (α= .928) of this instrument indicated high reliability and the instrument can be considered as a reliable instrument to be used for the study sample. EFL teacher needs to do self-monitoring and self-evaluation on their rapport building in classroom interaction using this instrument. Furthermore, EFL teacher can reflect on their own teaching and find additional activities to enhance positive rapport to foster positive learning environment.  Additionally, further research in investigating the effect of using this instrument in assessing teacher’s quality on rapport building is required. Keywords: Rapport, rapport in EFL classroom, teacher’s self-assessment, teacher development

Abstract

Deaf students need special treatment for gaining communication skills. Regarding this problem, there has been a new method called Maternal Reflective Method (also known as MRM) that encourages the deaf students to speak using their articulation organs simultaneously with the Indonesian Sign Language. This study aims to discover how nonverbal communication, including touch, body movement, and paralanguage are implemented in a teaching-learning discourse in the kindergarten classroom for the deaf children. The method used by the teacher in delivering the teaching material is the main focus to see the variation of pedagogic multimodal resources. The modes found are also scrutinized due to their communicative implication nature; in regard to Jakobson’s framework on the language functions: referential, emotive, conative, phatic, metalingual, and poetic. The results indicate that most of the time the teacher uses multimodal resources for commanding, prohibiting, and inviting the students in relation to the conative function of language.[Siswa Tuli membutuhkan penanganan khusus dalam mendapatkan kemampuan komunikasi. Berdasarkan hal tersebut, terdapat satu metode bernama Metode Maternal Reflektif (dikenal sebagai MMR) yang mendorong siswa Tuli untuk berbicara menggunakan organ artikulasi bersamaan dengan bahasa isyarat. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menelaah bagaimana komunikasi non-verbal, termasuk sentuhan, pergerakan tubuh, dan aspek paralingua diimplementasikan dalam wacana belajar-mengajar di kelas taman kanak-kanak untuk siswa tuli. Metode yang digunakan oleh guru dalam menyampaikan bahan ajar merupakan kunci dalam pencarian variasi sumber daya multimodal pedagogis. Moda-moda yang ditemukan juga diklasifikasikan berdasarkan ciri komunikatifnya; menggunakan teori Jakobson dalam fungsi bahasa: referensial, emotif, konatif, fatis, metalingual, dan puitis. Hasil penelitian mengindikasikan bahwa guru seringkali menggunakan sumber daya multimodal untuk memerintah, melarang, dan mengajak siswa sesuai dengan fungsi konatif bahasa.]

Abstract

This study is a transitivity analysis of the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee (1960). This study aims to investigate representation of a colored man named Tom Robinson through the types of process related to Tom Robinson. By using qualitative research, the research used the theory of Transitivity proposed by Halliday (1994). The data sources were in the form of eighteen clauses that specifically represent Tom Robinson and were sorted by concordance software Antconc 3.8.1. The findings of the research showed that there are four processes found in the clauses related to the character. Material process is the most frequent process (50%) followed by Relational process (27%) which are divided into two: Attributive Relational process (22%) and Identifying Relational Process (5%), Mental process (17%), and Verbal process (7%) are the second lowest and least frequent type in this research. The result of the research indicates that Tom Robinson as one of the people of color in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird is represented as a man who experienced social injustice.Keywords: Representation, Systemic Functional Linguistics, Ideational Meaning, Transitivity

Abstract

Language testing development intervened with cognitive processes and higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) has impacted the English tests, included Indonesian university entrance exams within a decade. State universities in Indonesia which are in demand to the high quality of their candidates have conducted a highly reputable entrance exams to select their best candidates. However, less research was conducted to investigate the trend of English questions in the scope of university entrance tests. This study aimed to investigate trends of English questions tested in both the SBMPTN (national university entrance exams) and the SIMAK UI (Universitas Indonesia’s entrance exams) in a decade (from 2009 to 2018). The study design was a mixed-method employing content analysis to English questions (quantitatively and qualitatively).  The findings revealed; 1) types of questions tested, 2) comprehension processes, 3) and higher-order thinking questions, and 4) construction MCQs to promote critical thinking skills in both entrance exams. Finally, implications of the findings were elaborated.Bahasa Indonesia Abstrak: Ujian Saringan Masuk (USM), khususnya soal bahasa Inggris, dipercaya dapat mengambarkan pemahamanan dan kemampuan berpikir kritis para kandidat. Oleh karena itu, penelitian terhadap USM menjadi sangat signifikan. Nyatanya, penelitian tentang USM sangat jarang dan tren terhadap soal-soal bahasa Inggris terbatas. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki tren dalam proses pemahaman dan kemampuan berpikir tingkat tinggi yang termanifestasi dalam Ujian Seleksi Masuk UI (SIMAK UI) dalam satu dekade belakangan (2009-2018). Dengan menggunakan metode campuran content analysis, pertanyaan-pertanyaan dianalisa secara kualitatif dan kuantitatif dan menghasil beberapa temuan seperti 1) jenis pertanyaan yang diuji, 2) proses pemahaman, 3)  pertanyaan  untuk kemampuan berpikir tingkat tinggi, dan 4)konstruksi pembuatan pertanyaan pilihan ganda yang bertujuan meningkatkan kemampuan berpikir kritis. Implikasi dari temuan ini juga dijelaskan.
