Abstract

Nowadays, the use of profanity is becoming more widespread, and it seems to be particularly common among teenagers. However, swear words do not have a fixed, universal meaning, as their usage is context-dependent and pragmatic. A single swear word can have multiple meanings and functions depending on the situation. This study aims analyze the pragmatic purposes behind their usage, based on the themes proposed by Ljung in 2011. The research adopts a qualitative content analysis method since the data comprises the characters' spoken words in the movie. The data collection process involves gathering relevant information about swear words, and once sufficient material is obtained, the movie is rented from YouTube. The data analysis steps involve data reduction, data displaying, and finally drawing conclusion. The findings reveal that the functions of the swear words, replacive swearing emerges as the most frequently used function among the characters, followed by name-calling, and the third are expletive interjection, and emphasis with the same occurrence frequency, anaphoric use of epithet, adjectives of dislike, and the last are unfriendly suggestions, as well as adverbial/adjectival intensifiers which share the same occurrence frequency. The results indicate that swear words are heavily used in the Suicide Squad movie. This research provides a rich theoretical and empirical framework for future research, especially concerning the study of swear words.

Abstract

This research delves into how Chinese murals in Kya-Kya, a Chinatown of Surabaya, visually convey meaning from the semiotic landscape point of view. Through Widgren's Theory of Form, Function, Process, and Context, this study seeks to discover how Chinese and Peranakan Cultures are represented in two Chinese Murals in Kya-Kya. The data source of this research is taken from the researchers` photographs of a few representatives of Chinese Murals in Kya-Kya. The data analyzed in this study include text (words), pictures, and colors. The findings show that the murals' text, pictures, colors, and shapes carry messages closely tied to the area's history, culture, and norms. They act as complex communication tools. The first mural uses color and Chinese symbols that match traditional Chinese cultural meanings, showing solid cultural connections. The second mural focuses more on the area's history, especially the influence of Chinese immigrants and Peranakan culture on local business and daily life. This is shown through cultural icons like traditional clothes, food, and building styles, a mixture of Chinese, Peranakan, and Javanese cultures. Both murals celebrate Kya-Kya's rich cultural heritage. The implications of this research extend to developing conservation strategies that respect both the artistic qualities and cultural meanings embedded within the murals, ultimately contributing to a deeper understanding of how communities express and sustain their heritage in contemporary contexts.

Abstract

This research aims to see how a media displays an ideology by framing the discourse of an issue. The data in this study are words and sentences in captions that represent how the Palestinian-Israeli conflict is reported through the Instagram accounts of CNN (@cnn) and Aljazeera (@aljazeeraenglish) news channels. In this research, the author uses qualitative methods to collect and review the findings. The data is analyzed using Critical Discourse Analysis by Van Dijk which includes macro structure, superstructure, and micro structure. Based on the results of the data analysis, it can be concluded that there are differences in the way the Palestinian-Israeli conflict is represented. This shows that each media channel from both @aljazeeraenglish and @cnn on average reflects their respective ideologies by using their views on the conflict to frame an event. In general, it can be seen that the way the @aljazeeraenglish account frames an event is indirectly impartial and uses several words that express criticism regarding the conditions that occur in Palestine. While on the @cnn account, they frame the news directly factually, and optimistically without taking sides.  The use of words in news strongly influences how a media account carries the ideology it wants to convey.

Abstract

The primary goal of this research was to examine metaphors in selected Blackpink song lyrics. The study's objectives are to identify the types of metaphors syntactically based on Abdul Wahab (1986) and to analyse the metaphorical meanings of selected Blackpink song lyrics using Lakoff and Johnson's source and target (1980). A descriptive-qualitative approach is used in this study. The metaphors used in Blackpink's song lyrics were the data. The researcher applies Abdul Wahab's theory of syntactical types of metaphor to the identified data and analyses it using Lakoff and Johnson's concept of source and target in metaphor. Subjective nominative metaphor, objective nominative metaphor, predicative metaphor, and sentence metaphor were the four types of metaphor used in five selected Blackpink song lyrics. The writer finds that the phrase metaphor is the type of metaphor most commonly used in Blackpink's songs, followed by the objective metaphor of the predicative metaphor and subjective metaphor. Each of the types of metaphors collected in the following study contains abstract terms with real meanings.

Abstract

In this case, the researcher wants to analyse three advertising posters for the Avon Catalog 2022 product “WHAT'S NEW” out of a total of singers representing dark-skinned women using semiotics. The dark-skinned women who became the object symbolized that the advertised product was suitable for all skin types. This study employs a qualitative approach with descriptive analysis. Therefore, this study aims to identify the signs (icon, index, symbol) and find out the meaning of messages contained in advertising posters through Peirce's theory. The results of this study indicate that there are 13 signs on 3 Avon advertising posters (Eye Love It, Luxury In The Shade of You, Winter-proof Your Skin). Besides that, the researcher also found the meaning of each symbol by using dark-skinned women, which shows that they can also positively impact the beauty world. It could be concluded that each advertisement had a different sign, and this distinct difference had given different interpretations. From the semiotics analysis of ads, the advertiser's complex idea can be quickly delivered by the cons quickly

Abstract

Second language acquisition is the process of learning the second language after an individual's first language has been established. The successful second language learner is affected by many factors. Three significant Second Language Acquisition (SLA) factors are Language Input, Learning environment, and motivation. This descriptive qualitative research aims to analyze the three significant components of SLA of two successful EFL undergraduate students, as evidenced by their advanced TOIEC scores and academic transcript demonstrating great achievement in English. This research shows that the language inputs of the two participants come from both inside and outside the classroom. The learning environment experienced by the participants included all three types of SLA learning environments: physical, psychological, and academic. Moreover, both participants have instrumental motivation, followed by intrinsic and extrinsic motivations

Abstract

Politeness and hedging are central in shaping credibility and interpersonal dynamics in online academic communication. This study examines how these strategies affect persuasion in Q&A forums, particularly Academia and CrossValidated communities on Stack Exchange. It aims to measure their influence on persuasive success through three indicators: answer acceptance, scoring, and response timing. Drawing on a corpus of 20,000+ threads, the study applies computational tools to detect politeness markers and hedging terms. The analysis uses mixed effects logistic regression, negative binomial regression, and Cox proportional hazards models, while controlling for user reputation, message length, and thread depth. Results show that politeness and hedging significantly enhance persuasive outcomes. Posts with more polite and mitigative language are more likely to be accepted, receive upvotes, and get faster responses. The effects are stronger for users with lower reputation, indicating that politeness functions as a compensatory strategy in digital peer interactions. The discussion acknowledges the limits of automated detection tools and stresses the role of context, culture, and disciplinary norms in interpreting politeness and hedging. This study concludes that politeness and hedging are essential rhetorical resources in digital academic dialogue. The findings offer practical implications for AI-driven moderation and feedback systems that aim to support inclusive and effective scholarly communication.

Abstract

Social media platforms provide celebrities with strategic opportunities to construct and project identities, yet studies employing semiotic frameworks remain limited. This research investigates how Indonesian musician and public figure Ahmad Dhani constructs self-branding through a single Instagram post, analyzed using Roland Barthes’ semiotic theory. Employing a qualitative case study, the study examines how visual and textual elements interact to create layered meanings across denotation, connotation, and myth. The findings reveal that Dhani’s post—featuring orchestral imagery and the textual message “Sorry if I am different”—functions not as an apology but as an affirmation of uniqueness. At the denotative level, the tuxedo, conductor’s stance, and blurred audience emphasize authority, refinement, and public recognition. Connotatively, the warm color palette and self-referential caption highlight creativity and authenticity. At the mythic level, the post transforms perceived arrogance into a narrative of leadership, positioning Dhani as a visionary figure whose difference signifies intellectual depth and cultural capital. This analysis underscores how Instagram can serve as a site for myth-making, where visual and textual signs operate as strategic tools for personal branding and reputation management. While the study offers insights into the cultural work of celebrity self-representation, its scope is limited to a single post. Future research should extend this analysis to multiple figures and longitudinal datasets to capture the evolving dynamics of digital identity construction.
