Abstract

AbstractThe purpose of this research was to improve reading comprehension in narrative texts to the ninth grader at SMPN 1 Singkawang. The researcher applied four strategies taken from Westwood: carefully viewing and overviewing what to be read, self questioning, selectively reading and summarizing. These strategies were implemented through three sequences; pre-viewing, while viewing and post viewing. The study showed that the use of video subtitles gave positive implication which effected on learning improvement. A set of sequences in video subtitles assisted the students in understanding the text, interpreting words, and improve their vocabularies. The students’ attitude towards their reading comprehension have improved, which was shown engaged actively during the learning process and their responses towards the strategy used. Moreover, the students also improved their score. Thus, it indicated that the learning process have run well and have increased individual performance. Abstract

Abstract This research entitled ?An Analysis of the Main Character?s Conflicts in Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher? was purposed to describe the main character?s conflicts. This research was in qualitative form. The method used is descriptive method. The source of data was taken from the novel Thirteen Reasons Why, published by Razorbill, USA 2007. This novel consists of 288 pages. The data in this research was taken from quotation words, phrases and sentences in the novel Thirteen Reasons Why. The research approach used in this research was structural approach. Based on the results of data analysis, it can be concluded that: First, the internal conflicts that happened to Hannah manifested by disappointment, sadness, confusion, anxiety, fear, suspicion, panic, trauma and boredom. Second, the external conflicts that happened to Hannah between the other characters shown as quarrel, oppression, debate, betrayal, and disagreement. The results of this research, especially for the students in English Education Study Program, are recommended to use this novel as one of the supporting materials for literature. For the readers of Thirteen Reasons Why, it can be used as a material of reflection and self-introspection in the face of reality of daily life that is full of problems. Keywords: Conflicts, Main Character, Novel

Abstract

AbstractThis thesis aimed to know the use of picture series in power point presentation in improving students’ writing in narrative text to the tenth grade students of MAN 1 Pontianak. This study was conducted through classroom action research. The subject of this research was 40 students of class X A. The writer worked collaboratively with the English teacher in the class. The writer did three cycles in this research. The data collected through qualitative and quantitative approach. The result of this study showed that the use of picture series in power point presentation can improve the students’ writing in narrative text. Based on the qualitative data, the use of picture series in power point presentation as the media in teaching and learning process helped the students to enjoy and get more attention to follow the lesson. Through picture series the students became more active and involved in teaching learning process. By looking at the order of the picture series in power point presentation the students were able to generate and develop their ideas. Based on quantitative data, the students also gained significant improvement in their writing performance. It could be seen that the students’ writing ability improve from first cycle to the third cycle. It can be concluded that picture series in power point presentation proved the students’ writing ability of tenth A grade students of MAN 1 Pontianak. Abstract

AbstractThe objective of the study was to find out whether or not the use of pantomime video can increase the students’ descriptive text writing achievement. The data was collected and analyzed with the non-equivalent control group design. Based on the test result, the writer discovered a good result that was shown by the effect size which was 1.24 and it was qualified as strong effect. In this case, the use of pantomime video can attract the students’ attention in learning descriptive text writing. The students know how to organize their ideas and state that ideas on a paper. In conclusion, the use of pantomime video to the Tenth Grade Students of SMA Negeri 1 Siantan in Academic Year 2016/2017 can increase their descriptive text writing achievement with strong effect. Abstract

Penelitian ini dilakukan di kelas XI SMA Negeri 2 Pontianak di tahun ajaran 2013/2014 yang bertujuan untuk mengetahui apakah benar atau tidak kegunaan tehnik Socratic Seminar efektif untuk mengajar berbicara dan mengetahui berapa besar keefektifan kegunaan Socratic Seminar tehnik di dalam meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara bahasa inggris siswa melalui teks hortatory exposition. Desain penelitian yang digunakan adalah experimental semu non-equivalent control group design. Tehnik samplingnya adalah cluster dan sample penelitiannya adalah kelas IPA 3 sebagai kelas ekperimental dan kelas IPA 4 sebagai kelas control. Berdasarkan hasil keefektifan, t-test lebih besar dari t-table dan hal tersebut mendukung hipotesis alternative untuk diterima. Sedangkan efek dari tehnik yang dilakukan menunjukan angka 0.99 dan itu menandakan bahwa efek yang diberikan sangat besar. Kesimpulannya adalah Socratic Seminar efektif dan memberikan pengaruh yang besar dalam pencapaian kemampuan berbicara pada siswa. Kata Kunci : Socratic Seminar, Berbicara, Teks Hortatory Exposition   Abstract: This research was conducted to the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Pontianak in academic year 2013/2014. The purposes are to know whether or not the use of Socratic Seminar technique effective in teaching speaking on hortatory exposition text and to know how significant the effectiveness of the use of Socratic Seminar is in improving students’ speaking on hortatory exposition text. A Quasi-experimental with non-equivalent control group design was used by the writer as the research method. Cluster sampling is the technique sampling and the samples of this research were class IPA 3 as the experimental group and class IPA 4 as the control group. The computation of t-test is higher than t-table, thereforethe alternative hypothesis is accepted. The effect size of the treatment was 0.99 and it was qualified as very strong. The results of this research arethe Socratic Seminar technique is effective andstrong effect toward students’ speaking achievement. Keywords: Socratic Seminar, Speaking, Hortatory Exposition Text

Abstract

Abstract: The purposes of this research are to find out the effectiveness and how effective the implementation of self-assessment in teaching reading comprehension on narrative text to the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 7 Pontianak in academic year 2014/2015. In this research, the writer used pre-experimental research and the sample was class X IIS 1 which consists of 33 students. The research found that the students in the school need an effective assessment which might help them engage in the learning process and give them feedback that hence improved future learning. The result of this research shows that self-assessment helps students in reading comprehension on narrative text which is represented by the t-compution is 28.39 with the effect size is 16.39 or categorized as strong effect. It indicates that the implementation of self-assessment is effective in teaching reading on narrative text.   Keywords: Self-Assessment, Reading Comprehension, Narrative Text Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui keefektifan dan tingkat efektifitas dari penerapan self-assessment dalam pengajaran komprehensi membaca pada teks narrative terhadap siswa kelas 10 SMA Negeri 7 Pontianak tahun ajaran 2014/2015. Penilitian ini dilakukan dengan metode pre-eksperimen dan sampel penilitian adalah kelas X IIS 1 yang terdiri atas 33 siswa. Dari penilitian yang dilakukan ditemukan bahwa siswa di sekolah tersebut memerlukan cara penilaian yang efektif untuk membantu mereka terlibat dalam proses belajar and memperoleh umpan balik untuk perkembangan pembelajaran. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa self-assessment­ membatu komprehensi membaca siswa pada teks narrative yang dibuktikan pada t-compution 28.39 dengan tingkat efektifitas 16.39 atau dikategorikan memiliki efek yang kuat. Hal ini menandakan bahwa penerapan self-assessment efektif dalam pengajaran komprehensi membaca pada teks narrative.   Kata Kunci: Self-Assessment, Komprehensi Membaca, Teks Narrative

Abstract

Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendesain model pembelajaran kontekstual dengan menggunakan modul pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris untuk meningkatkan keterampilan membaca bagi mahasiswi di Akademi Kebidanan Panca Bhakti Pontianak. Metode penelitian yang di gunakan adalah Penelitian dan Pengembangan atau yang biasa dikenal dalam istilah Bahasa Inggris R&D (Research and Development) dengan produk akhir berupa modul pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris untuk keterampilan membaca bagi mahasiswi kebidanan. Sampel penelitian dilakukan terhadap 20 mahasiswi kebidanan. Hasil analisis data dari akumulasi penilaian secara keseluruhan untuk aspek tampilan dari modul, aspek penyajian materi yang dimuat dalam modul,dan aspek manfaat penggunaan modul dalam proses belajar mahasiswi mencapai 81% dengan ketercapaian baik.   Kata kunci : Model kontekstual, modul,keterampilan membaca Abstract: The purpose of this research was preceded the design of model contextual teaching learning to improve students reading comprehension skill at Midwifery Academy of Panca Bhakti Pontianak. This research used research and development method as a form to conduct the result of the research. The final product in this research was an instructional module. Sampel in this research consist of 20 students of midwifery. The result of this research from the layout module, material presentation, and the benefit aspect got 81% and the criteria average to good. Key words: Contextual, module, reading comprehension

Abstract

 AbstractThis research is aimed at improving students’ speaking activeness using flashcards media in teaching learning process. The subject of this research is class VIII C students at SMP Kemala Bhyangkari Sungai Raya in academic year 2017/2018. This research was done by asking and answering the materials to make the students active in speaking. In this research, the researcher implemented flashcards as the media. Therefore, the method used in this research is a classroom action research in which the researcher concerned with the improvement of students’ activeness in every meeting. This research was conducted in two cycles. In collecting the data the researcher observed the improvement of students’ activeness in speaking through observation checklist, field notes, and activeness table. The result of this research showed that flashcards media can improve the students’ activeness in speaking by asking and answering the materials. The students’ individual score in activeness also improved in teaching learning process. From the result, it can be concluded that students’ activeness in speaking by asking and answering the materials taught by flashcards media was improved. Abstract

Abstract The researcher conducted a research about teaching simple past tense in writing recount text by using inductive method. The purpose of this research was to investigate how inductive method improved the use of simple past tense in writing recount text. Based on the students’ problems in the class, the researcher used a classroom action research as the method of research. The subject of this research was the eighth grade students in class A of MTsN 2 Pontianak in academic year 2016/2017. The result of this research showed that there was an improvement of students’ correct use of simple past tense in writing recount text. It was known from the observation and students’ writing assessment. In conclusion, the use of simple past tense in writing recount text improved by using inductive method. This inductive method is recommended for the English teacher when she/he teaches simple past tense in writing recount text.. Keywords: Simple Past Tense, Writing, Recount Text, Inductive Method

Abstract

Abstract: This research discussed the requirements in the background of the students in writing the ideas (content). The researcher took the latest five year of the students’ thesis background writing as the sample; there were 25 samples be analyzed of the students’ thesis background writing of English Education Study Program of FKIP Untan year 2009/2010-2013/2014. The researcher applied the documentary research as the technique of data collecting and the method of this research was descriptive study. There four major points were analyzed on the students’ thesis background are the reason of choosing topic, the hope and fact, the other related theories, and the relevant information. As the results, the researcher found that there four samples were not conveyed completely about one of the four points in thesis background.   Keywords:Analysis, Research background, documentary technique Abstrak: Penelitianini bertujuan untuk mendiskusikan tentang komponen-komponenyan harus tertulis dalam menulis sebuah latar belakang suatu penelitian .Penelititelah mengambil 5 sampel latar belakang penelitian dari masing-masing populasi di tahun 2009/2010-2013/2014 (lima tahun terakhir) dari program studi bahasa Inggris di FKIP Untan. Jadi jumlah keseluruhan sample adalah 25 sample yang dipergunakan dalam menganalisis data.Dalam teknik menumpulkan data, peneliti menggunakan dokumen serta latar belakang penelitian mahasiswa sebagai  instrument dalam penelitian ini dan menggunakan metode deskriptif dalam menganalisis data.Adapun keempat komponen yang terdapat dalam sebuah latar belakang penelitian yang telah dianalisis yaitu: alas an dalam memilih suatu topic penelitian, ekpektasi dan fakta di lapangan, informasi yang relevan dan teori-teori  yang berkaitan. Alhasil, peneliti menemukan bahwahanya 4 sampel yang tidak lengkap terulis tentang salah satu dari keempat hal yang seharusnya terdapat dalam latar belakang penelitian.   Kata kunci: Analisis, latar belakang penelitian, teknik dokumentasi Â
