Abstract

In the Society 5.0 era, students are expected to not only solve mathematical problems but also articulate their reasoning clearly. However, many students struggle with mathematical communication, especially in expressing, justifying, and representing their thinking. This study investigates the effectiveness of the Deep Learning-Based Course Review Horay (CRH) model in enhancing students’ mathematical communication skills through an interactive and technology-supported approach. A sequential explanatory mixed-methods design was employed involving 15 eighth-grade students at MTs. Nurul Hidayah, Sumenep. The intervention integrated Course Review Horay—a collaborative, game-based strategy—with deep learning analytics that provided automated, personalized feedback on students’ written responses. Quantitative data were collected using a validated Mathematical Communication Test (pre- and post-intervention), while qualitative insights were drawn from classroom observations and student interviews. Findings revealed a significant improvement in mathematical communication scores, from a pretest mean of 42.87 to a posttest mean of 78.93, t(14) = 4.38, p 0.001, with a large effect size (Cohen’s d = 1.13). Thematic analysis showed increased participation, clearer expression of reasoning, and enhanced student confidence supported by real-time feedback. The Deep Learning-Based CRH model effectively fostered cognitive and communicative growth by combining active learning and intelligent feedback. It supported students in verbalizing, representing, and justifying mathematical ideas in a low-anxiety, reflective environment. This model presents a scalable, student-centered approach aligned with the goals of Society 5.0 and 21st-century education.

Abstract

This study investigates the implementation of ethnomathematics-based STEAM learning and its impact on numeracy literacy skills and the Pancasila Student Profile of students at SDN Karangnangka II. The research aims to integrate local cultural values into mathematics education and assess its effectiveness in enhancing students’ numeracy literacy. A mixed-method approach with a sequential exploratory design was used. Data were collected through observations, interviews, and tests. Ethnomathematics elements were identified within Asta Tinggi Sumenep, including its main gate, tomb dome, and landmark, which incorporate various geometric shapes. The learning process followed the steps: Observe, New Idea, Innovation, Creativity, and Society, integrating six dimensions of the Pancasila Student Profile. The implementation of ethnomathematics-based STEAM learning significantly improved students’ numeracy literacy. Pre-test and post-test results showed an increase in average scores from 48.00 to 81.00. Normality tests (Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Shapiro-Wilk) indicated that data were normally distributed (? 0.05). A paired-sample t-test revealed a significant effect (? = 0.001 0.05), confirming the positive impact of this learning model. The findings highlight the effectiveness of integrating local cultural elements into STEAM education. The approach fosters both numeracy literacy and the development of Pancasila Student Profile competencies, aligning education with cultural heritage. Ethnomathematics-based STEAM learning enhances students’ numeracy literacy and character development. Future research should explore its scalability and long-term benefits in broader educational contexts.

Abstract

Developing students' 21st-century competencies—critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity (4C)—remains a significant challenge, especially in remote and resource-limited schools. This study investigates the effectiveness of a Deep Learning STEAM model in improving 4C skills among elementary students. A mixed-methods sequential explanatory design was employed with 21 fourth-grade students at SDN Masalima IV, a remote island school in Sumenep Regency, Indonesia. The intervention integrated Deep Learning principles (meaningful, mindful, joyful learning) into a five-phase STEAM model: Observation, New Idea, Innovation, Creativity, and Society. Data were collected through pre- and post-tests of 4C skills, classroom observations, interviews, and student project documentation. Quantitative data were analyzed using paired-sample t-tests, while qualitative data underwent thematic analysis. Statistical analysis showed a significant increase in students’ 4C scores from a mean of 47.19 to 81.67 (p 0.001), with a large effect size (Cohen’s d = 4.72) and normalized gain (n-gain = 0.75). Thematic findings revealed enhanced student engagement, reasoning, collaboration, and creative output during project-based learning, supported by increased self-confidence and reflective thinking. The Deep Learning STEAM model proved effective in enhancing 4C skills within a low-resource context by aligning cognitive depth with interdisciplinary and experiential learning. It offers a scalable, context-sensitive strategy for implementing 21st-century skills education in remote areas.
