Abstract

This research is motivated by the existence of a gap between the concept of Grice's cooperative principle and its application in the culture of the Riau people. The problem in this research is what is the reason for the violation of the maxim of manner in the culture of the Riau people? This study uses a qualitative approach with the grounded theory method. Informants in this study amounted to 79 informants who came from a number of districts in Riau and Riau Islands. The data analysis technique in this study consisted of three stages, namely: open coding, axial coding, and selective coding. The conclusion of this research shows that cultural differences make Grice's principle of cooperation, especially the maxim of manner, not universally applicable to all languages. There are a number of reasons for violating the maxim of manner, namely reasons of politeness, confusion in giving answers, forgetting, nervousness, empathy, avoiding direct speech, secrets, substitute vocabulary, pleasantries, pleasantries, lying, habits, and upset/angry. Violation of Grice's cooperative principle is not a bad thing, in fact the violation occurs because of the cultural influence that exists in the language. The violation of Grice's maxim of cooperation in a language is a manifestation of the actual principle of cooperation in that language.

Abstract

The approach in this research is a qualitative approach with content analysis method. The source of the data in this study is a comment on Rocky Gerung's Youtube "The Governor of NTT Makes a Thrill, Orders High School Students to Enter at 5 in the Morning. Misunderstanding of the World of Education”. The data used are expressive speech acts contained in the comments. Data collection techniques used are observing, documenting, and taking notes. The collected data were then analyzed using the Burhan Bungin analysis technique. Based on the results of the study, 156 utterances were found which were identified as expressive speech acts. The most frequent speech acts were expressive speech acts of blaming because the policies set were contradictory so that people expressed their psychological attitudes in the form of blaming comments, while the speech acts that were not found from the results of the analysis were expressive speech acts of interrupting, welcoming, forgiving, condolences, and accusing. The analysis also found new data findings, namely: contempt, support, expressions of disappointment, surprise, and sadness, as well as found several non-literal speech acts with the utterances spoken.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the gap between Grice's theory and the culture of Indonesian society. Differences between western culture and Indonesian culture give rise to utterances that contain maxims in the principle of cooperation. Discusses issues regarding compliance with and violations of cooperative principles, and reasons for violations of work principles. This study aims to describe the cooperative principle contained in the teacher's utterances, both those who obey and those who violate. This research is guided by the theory put forward by Grice about the principle of cooperation. The approach in this study is a qualitative approach with content analysis methods. The data in this study are all teacher conversations that contain the principle of cooperation. The source of the data in this study was teacher conversations at SMAN 3 Gunung Sahilan, Kampar Regency, Riau. The techniques used in data collection are observation techniques, note-taking techniques, and interview techniques. The results of the study suggest that of the four maxims, the dominant maxims that appear are the maxims that obey, because these utterances are taken from the utterances of teachers in the school environment. The school environment is a formal environment. So that it raises more adherence to maxims in the utterances that occur. However, even though school is a formal environment, the teacher's speech does not always fulfill the principle of cooperation, sometimes when speaking the teacher can violate the principle of cooperation. This is due to several reasons, such as; familiarity, want to create humor, want to explain something in detail, want to be polite, and want to look polite.
