Abstract

Sequential condensation and hydrodeoxygenation reaction were perform using autoclave batch reactor in the presence of water as a solvent. The condensation of furfural and acetone was performed using MgO catalyst followed by hydrodeoxygenation using mix catalyst Ni/SiO2 and Cu/SiO2. The catalyst was prepared by wet-impregnation method and analyzed by XRD, SEM-EDX as well as BET surface. Condensation of furfural and acetone in 1:2 mol ratio was carried out by reflux gave 4-(2-furyl)-3-buten-2-one and 1,5-bis-(2-furanyl)-1,4-pentadien-3-one. The condensation product was then subjected for hydrodeoxygenation using batch reactor, catalyzed by mixed Ni/SiO2 and Cu/SiO2 at 150 and 180 °C for 2 h. The product identified as alkane derivatives with the conversion at 38.83 and 50.35%, respectively. The selectivity of hydrocarbon is 61.39% at 150 °C and 16.55% at 180 °C. Increasing the reaction temperature to 200 °C did not give any products except the recovery of the precursor. It showed that higher temperature enhanced the catalyst activity but the selectivity is controlled by low reaction temperature.

Abstract

The solubility of the compound is a crucial task for new drug design. Quinone is a promising candidate to develop as a new drug. In this research, the synthesis of 1,4-benzoquinone derivatives, that is, 2-(5-bromoamyl)-3,5-dimethyl-1,4-benzoquinone (2a) and 2-(5-bromoamyl)-5-methyl-1,4-benzoquinone (2b) were carried out by decarboxylation and insertion reaction of alkyl bromides. The product 2a and 2b are purified using SiO2 gel column chromatography and analyzed by UV-Visible, FT-IR, and NMR. The yield of 2a is 13.75%, and 2b is 4.04%. The solubility of 2a and 2b, expressed by log P, is measured in the n-octanol/water (3:7 (v/v)) system by the shake flask method. The log P of 2a and 2b are 2.99 and 1.36, respectively. It is showed that the log P of 2a is higher compared to 2b. The presence of two methyl substituents on the quinone ring of 2a supports the increase of hydrophobicity of the compound in the n-octanol/water system.

Abstract

The wide therapeutic effect of quinone-based drugs has received considerable interest for a long time. In this research, Friedel-Crafts performed a facile synthesis of quinone derivatives using the mixture of Brønsted acid. Reflux of 2,3-dimethylhydroquinone (1), isopropanol, glacial acetic acid, and H2SO4 for 15 minutes gave yellow oil product of 5-isopropyl-2,3-dimethylbenzene-1,4-diol (2) as a major product. Characterization using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) revealed the methine proton splitting for isopropyl at δ 3.13 ppm, which has a cross-coupling with aromatic carbon at δ 119.6 ppm suggested the substitution of a proton on quinone ring with isopropyl group. Analysis Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FT-IR) showed the broad spectrum of –OH, the vibration of CH sp3, and isopropyl groups. The minor products identified as 5-isopropyl-2,3-dimethylcyclohexa-2,5-diene-1,4-dione (3), 5-isopropyl-2,3-dimethyl-1,4 phenylene diacetate (4), and 2,3-dimethylbenzene-5,6-isopropyl-1,4-diol (5) confirmed from 2D HETCOR and MS analysis. The partition coefficient (log P) of compound 2 showed a higher solubility by 1.9-fold compared to hydroquinone 1. It is suggested that an additional methyl group increased the partition into the organic phase.

Abstract

The biological activity and solubility of compounds are influenced by its chemical structure. These properties can be improved by substituting alkyl, alkoxy, and/or haloalkane in the parent skeleton. In this research, the synthesis of 3-(7-bromoheptyl)-2-methyl-5-methoxy-1,4-benzoquinone (3a) and 3-(10-bromodecyl)-2-methyl-5-methoxy-1,4-benzoquinone (3b) was achieved through the decarboxylation reaction. The solubility and biological activity of 3a and 3b were compared with that of thymoquinone (TQ), which acts as an anti-inflammatory agent. Compounds 3a and 3b were successfully synthesized and analyzed using Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR) and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR). The FTIR spectrum showed the increasing intensity of C-H sp3 and the absorption of C-Br because of the presence of the bromoheptyl and bromodecyl substituents. 1H-NMR showed the prominent chemical shift of olefinic methylene at δ 1.29–3.40 ppm. The solubility test showed the differences in the partition coefficient (log P) of 3a and 3b in the n-octanol/water system. The log P values of 3a and 3b are higher than those of TQ, indicating that methoxy, bromoheptyl, and bromodecyl support the increase in solubility. Biological activity test using the in silico approach showed that 3a and 3b have a higher tendency to bind with the translocator protein (TSPO) macromolecule than the phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) macromolecule. The binding interactions of TSPO-3a and TSPO-3b, similar to that of TSPO-TQ, showed that both synthesized compounds have comparable activity. The binding energy of TSPO-3a is lower than that of TSPO-3b, indicating that 3a has a higher activity for anti-inflammatory drug candidates than 3b.

Abstract

Synthesis and characterization of cellulose acetate and nanocellulose acetate have been carried out. Cellulose was isolated from sengon wood powder waste using 6% NaOH solution and bleached with NaOCl. The cellulose was hydrolyzed with 60% formic acid to obtain nanocellulose. Cellulose and nanocellulose were then modified with acetic anhydride. The synthesized products were characterized by FTIR to identify organic functional groups, powder XRD to measure crystallinity, and SEM to observe surface morphology. Solubility tests in several types of solvents were also performed. The degree of substitution (DS) of cellulose acetate and nanocellulose acetate was carried out based on Indonesia’s SNI 0444:2009 method. The DS calculation show that the cellulose acetate and nanocellulose have DS of 2.9 and 2.1, respectively.

Abstract

Microplastics are contaminants resulting from plastic fragmentation with a size <5 mm. The spread of microplastics threatens the imbalance of the environment and organisms in the waters. So it is necessary to know the abundance, size distribution, and correlation between microplastic abundance and water quality parameters. This study used a quantitative descriptive method with purposive sampling. The study parameters included total microplastic abundance, microplastic abundance based on size characteristics, type of microplastic polymer, water quality parameters, and correlation between microplastic abundance and water quality. Calculating the total abundance of microplastics obtained a value range of 3311.11 – 18111.11 particles/m3. The results of the microplastic size distribution got the highest abundance percentage value in the class with a size <50 µm, which was 84.39%. There were eight types of polymers identified, including Polyethylene (PE), Polyvinyl chloride (PVC), Polypropylene (PP), High-density polyethylene (HDPE), Low-density polyethylene (LDPE, Polyethylene terephthalate (PET), Polycarbonate (PC), and Nylon. Water quality measurements obtained temperature range of 17.37-26.63 °C, pH value range of 6.66-8.51, current velocity value range of 0.13-0.8 m/s, DO value range of 4, 32-6.103 ppm, BOD value range of 4.69-6.07 ppm and TSS value range 0.005-0.019 ppm. Correlation analysis using the Canonical Correlation Analysis (CCA) statistical method. The study showed that water quality parameters such as temperature, current velocity, and DO have a high score of 0.95, 0.83, and 0.8.

Abstract

Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is applied in fuel processing technology to convert bio-oils to green diesel with metal-based catalysts. The major challenges to this process are feedstock, catalyst preparation, and the production of oxygen-free diesel fuel. In this study, we aimed to synthesize Ni catalysts supported on silica-zirconia and alumina-zirconia binary oxides and evaluated their catalytic activity for waste cooking oil (WCO) hydrodeoxygenation to green diesel. Ni/Al2O3-ZrO2 and Ni/SiO2-ZrO2 were synthesized by wet-impregnation and hydrodeoxygenation of WCO was done using a modified batch reactor. The catalysts were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and scanning electron microscopy - energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), and N2 isotherm adsorption-desorption analysis. Gas chromatography - mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis showed the formation of hydrocarbon framework n-C15 generated from the use of Ni/Al2O3-ZrO2 with the selectivity of 68.97% after a 2 h reaction. Prolonged reaction into 4 h, decreased the selectivity to 58.69%. Ni/SiO2-ZrO2 catalyst at 2 h showed selectivity of 55.39% to n-C15. Conversely, it was observed that the reaction for 4 h increased selectivity to 65.13%. Overall, Ni/Al2O3-ZrO2 and Ni/SiO2-ZrO2 catalysts produced oxygen-free green diesel range (n-C14-C18) enriched with n-C15 hydrocarbon. Reaction time influenced the selectivity to n-C15 hydrocarbon. Both catalysts showed promising hydrodeoxygenation activity via the hydrodecarboxylation pathway. Copyright © 2021 by Authors, Published by BCREC Group. Abstract

Waste management by society not only reflects individual responsibility but also plays a crucial role in environmental sustainability and community welfare. This research aimed to understand society’s perception and behavior regarding domestic waste and its surrounding waters. Understanding societal behavior is the key to sustainable environmental management. Direct inquiry was conducted to the sample population of 25 respondents who represented various age, education, and cultural groups in the densely populated residential area surrounding the Brantas River in Dinoyo Ward. Field observations were done to take water quality parameters and monitor the residents’ behavior regarding waste management. The results indicated that 76% of respondents know the impact of river pollution, although most did not contribute actively to reducing their domestic waste volume. About 44% of respondents never saw anyone littering the river, which may be due to the regular waste pick-up system. This was supported by water quality parameters that did not demonstrate any sign of pollution, although high turbidity was indicated. Comprehension of the results of this study is hoped to inspire the ideas of solid intervention plans to increase awareness and decrease the negative impact of domestic waste on the Brantas River in Dinoyo Ward. Keywords: society perception and behavior, domestic waste management, aquatic environment, Brantas River
