Abstract

Ni/MgO catalyst has been designed as bifunctional catalyst for condensation reaction of furfural and acetone followed by hydrogenation reaction to produce C8-C13 alkane derivatives in one step reaction. Ni/MgO catalyst was prepared by wet impregnation methods using Ni(NO3)2.6H2O and MgO as supporting material. The charcterization by X-ray diffraction (XRD) showed the characteristic of Ni on 2q = 44,27o; 51,59o and 75,89o. Isoterm adsorpsi using N2 gas gave the decreasing surface area of MgO and forming microporous structure. The activity test of the catalyst was carried out using furfural and acetone (1:1) in autoclave bath system, heated at 100-180oC for 7-8 hours in the presence of water. Ni/MgO catalyst showed the good activity when hydrogenation reaction performed at 150oC lead to the conversion of alkane derivatives in 95.69%. Characterization of the product by GC-MS showed the formation of 4-(2-furanyl)-2-butanone; 1,5-di(2-furanyl)-3-pentanone and 1,5-di(2-furanyl)-3-(1-pentenone) from reduction of C=C alkene of furfurylidene acetone.

Abstract

Although photolysis of phenyazide has been widely reported to give 3H-azepine, the thermal deoxygenation reaction of alkylnitrobenzene derived similar products hitherto unexplored. Novel synthesis of 2-methoxy-3H-azepine derivatives was carried out using alkylnitrobenzene with tributylphosphine (Bu3P) reacted at 150°C for 24 hours in the presence of methanol. Reaction of m-nitrobenzene with the above methods gave two isomers of 3H-azepine, namely, 2-methoxy-6-methyl-3H-azepine and 2-methoxy-4-methyl-3H-azepine in 61%. Reaction of 2,3-dimethylnitrobenzene with Bu3P afforded the three isomers, that is, 2-methoxy-6,7-dimethyl-3H-azepine; 2-methoxy-3,4-dimethyl-3H-azepine and 7-methoxy-5,6-dimethyl-4H-azepine. Reaction of 3,5-dimethylnitrobenzene gave the sole product of 2-methoxy-4,6-dimethyl-3H-azepine in 42%. In contrast, reaction of 2,6-dimethylnitrobenzene didn’t give any product because the steric effect of methyl groups attached on C2 and C6. Structure elucidation of all novel products have confirmed by HETCOR.

Abstract

This research aims to determine changes of  the chemical composition in the hydration and oxidation reaction of Kaffir lime (Cytrus hystrix DC.) oil. The hydration reaction was carried out using a Amberlyst catalyst with variation time for 1.5, 3, and 4.5 hours. Furthermore, the oxidation process was carried out using PCC catalyst with variation time for 1, 1.5, and 3 hours. Then, the analysis of chemical composition was performed using GC-MS. The results showed that hydration reaction process for 1,5 hours has changed monoterpenes micrene and b-ocimen turned into linalool and it changes citronellal to be linalool, citronellol and dimer ether citronellyl citronellol. The longer process of hydration tends to increase the dimer ether citronellyl citronellol products. Within that process, it has turned citronellal into isopulegol and isopulegone. The longer oxidation will decrease  isopulegone products.

Abstract

The profile of chemical potential of benzene fluid has been investigated using Anisotropic United Atom (AUA) model. A Monte Carlo simulation in canonical ensemble was done to obtain the isotherm of benzene fluid, from which the excess part of chemical potential was calculated. A surge of potential energy is observed during the simulation at high temperature which is related to the gas-liquid phase transition. The isotherm profile indicates the tendency of benzene to condensate due to the strong attractive interaction. The results show that the chemical potential of benzene rapidly deviates from its ideal gas counterpart even at low density.

Abstract

The catalytic hydrogenation/deoxygenation (H/D) reaction was carried out using Ni/Al2O3-ZrO2 catalyst. The 10% (wt/wt) of Ni were impregnated on Al2O3-ZrO2 (10NiAZ) by wet impregnation method followed by calcination and reduction. X-Ray diffraction analysis showed that Nideposited on the surface, with specific surface areas (SBET) was 48.616 m2/g. Catalyst performance were evaluated for H/D reaction over furfural-acetone condensation products, mixture of 2-(4-furyl)-3-buten-2-on and 1,5-bis-(furan-2-yl)-pentan-3-one. The reaction was carried out in a batch, performed at 150°C for 8 hours. The H/D reaction gave alkane derivatives C8 and C10 by hydrogenation process followed by ring opening of furan in 15.2% yield. While, oxygenated product C10-C13 were also detected in 17.2% yield. The increasing of pore volume of 10NiAZ might enhance catalyst activity over H/D reaction. The alkene C=C bond was easy to hydrogenated under this condition by the lower bond energy gap.

Abstract

Polyaniline (PANI) is a conductive polymer and potential for application in the electronic device manufacturing. This paper discloses a recent strategy in synthesis polyaniline nanoparticle (NP-PANI) using inverse micelle (IM) microemulsion method, and also characterization of the provided products. The synthesis step was conducted by mixing of aniline as a polymer precursor with PEG 400, n-hexane, n-butanol, ammonium persulfate and hydrochloric acid in three different reaction times, i.e. for 2, 6, and 12 hours at 26 oC. NP-PANI was afforded as a brown powder in 2.87%, 1.97% and 2.30% yield for NP-PANI-IM-2, NP-PANI-IM-6 and NP-PANI-IM-12. The characteristic on ultra violet-visible and infrared spectra exhibited NP-PANI was formed as an emeraldine salt oligomer. Moreover, their morphology was observed through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and showed a different range of nanoparticle size, i.e. 50-62, 68-72 and 58-62 nm for NP-PANI-IM-2, NP-PANI-IM-6 and NP-PANI-IM-12, respectively. These products open the potency application in material science.

Abstract

Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is applied in fuel processing technology to convert bio-oils to green diesel with metal-based catalysts. The major challenges to this process are feedstock, catalyst preparation, and the production of oxygen-free diesel fuel. In this study, we aimed to synthesize Ni catalysts supported on silica-zirconia and alumina-zirconia binary oxides and evaluated their catalytic activity for waste cooking oil (WCO) hydrodeoxygenation to green diesel. Ni/Al2O3-ZrO2 and Ni/SiO2-ZrO2 were synthesized by wet-impregnation and hydrodeoxygenation of WCO was done using a modified batch reactor. The catalysts were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and scanning electron microscopy - energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), and N2 isotherm adsorption-desorption analysis. Gas chromatography - mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis showed the formation of hydrocarbon framework n-C15 generated from the use of Ni/Al2O3-ZrO2 with the selectivity of 68.97% after a 2 h reaction. Prolonged reaction into 4 h, decreased the selectivity to 58.69%. Ni/SiO2-ZrO2 catalyst at 2 h showed selectivity of 55.39% to n-C15. Conversely, it was observed that the reaction for 4 h increased selectivity to 65.13%. Overall, Ni/Al2O3-ZrO2 and Ni/SiO2-ZrO2 catalysts produced oxygen-free green diesel range (n-C14-C18) enriched with n-C15 hydrocarbon. Reaction time influenced the selectivity to n-C15 hydrocarbon. Both catalysts showed promising hydrodeoxygenation activity via the hydrodecarboxylation pathway. Copyright © 2021 by Authors, Published by BCREC Group. Abstract

This microalgae contains various valuable substances such as carotenoids, glycerol, lipid, protein, and vitamins, and thus, widely cultivated. One of the primary factors that influence the growth of cultured Dunaliella sp. is the availability of certain nutrient/chemical compounds in its culture media. One of the compounds that can stimulate the growth of microalgae is vanadate (VO43-). This study analyzed the effects of vanadate concentration in the culture media on the growth of Dunaliella sp. The vanadate concentrations used were 0.002 mg/L, 0.02 mg/L, 0.2 mg/L, and 0 mg/L as the control concentration. The results of this study suggested that the existence of vanadate in the culture media significantly affected the growth of Dunaliella sp. in which the best growth of Dunaliella sp. was obtained by the treatment with 0.002 mg /L of vanadate. This study recommends that the vanadate with concentration of 0.002 mg/L should be used in the culture media of Dunaliella sp.
