Abstract

This study examines the resistance message against capitalism conveyed by tomato farmers in Cikareumbi Village, Lembang Sub-district, through the cultural tradition of Rempug Tarung Adu Tomat (Tomato Battle). Using a qualitative approach within a critical discourse framework, the research explores how farmers employ symbolism to express collective resistance. The findings show that the resistance is articulated in two stages: first, by deliberately allowing tomatoes to rot as a rejection of unfair pricing; and second, by staging the Tomato Battle as a symbolic protest. Key symbolic elements include the masked guards representing capitalist oppression, the masks themselves symbolizing deception, and the tomato battle signifying solidarity and unity among farmers. Furthermore, the processing of rotten tomatoes into compost and seeds highlights their pursuit of independence from exploitative systems. This resistance is driven by two main factors: the unfair pricing practices imposed by intermediaries and the lack of government support. Ultimately, the farmers’ message reflects not only their opposition to capitalist exploitation but also their demand for fair recognition and state intervention.

Abstract

Museum management can no longer rely on traditional archiving methods due to the dynamic development of media. A new approach is needed through digital archiving presented via interactive multimedia devices, enabling information to be delivered quickly, easily, and engagingly. The main challenge lies in ensuring the effectiveness of information delivery so that content is thoroughly understood by visitors. This study was conducted at Bale Panyawangan Diorama Purwakarta (BPDP) and Bale Panyawangan Diorama Nusantara (BPDN), employing an e-learning approach to assess the effectiveness of information delivery and a user experience (UX) framework to evaluate the quality of user interaction. The research process was carried out under conditions where the museums were deliberately arranged to be free from other visitors, in collaboration with the museum management, allowing the trials to run more focused and controlled. The findings indicate that visual multimedia formats were the most effective in delivering information, while text-based formats scored the lowest. These results highlight the significant role of pragmatic UX quality in enhancing information reception. Building on these findings, the study also proposes a follow-up design in the form of a wall projection (hyperwall) as an alternative to touchscreen devices to strengthen interactivity. The outcomes of this research and design provide a foundation for future multimedia development in museums.

Abstract

This research examines the message of resistance against capitalism conveyed by the tomato farmers in Cikareumbi village of Lembang sub-district through the cultural event of Rempug Tarung Adu Tomat or, as it is simply called, the “tomato battle”. Methods: This research adopts a critical discourse approach with a qualitative method. Results: The research shows that the Cikareumbi tomato farmers present their message in two steps. Firstly, they let their tomatoes go bad. Secondly, they start the tomato battle event. In practice, the message of resistance is delivered through the symbolisms found in the tomato battle. The guards represent capitalism that has made the farmers suffer, the mask worn by the guards represents the falseness of capitalism, the tomato battle represents the unity and strength of the tomato farmers against capitalism. Meanwhile, the processing of rotten tomatoes used in the battle into fertiliser and new seeds represents their class’ independence. Conclusion: Their action is propelled by two things, i.e., the unfair price set by the bourgeoise class and the lack of government’s support for the farmers. Their resistance is ultimately against capitalism that is represented by the bourgeoise class and their message also conveys their wish to be supported by the government.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the role of digital media literacy in addressing the phenomenon of character assassination against the Governor of West Java among students in Bandung. In today’s digital era, the spread of inaccurate or harmful information can quickly circulate through social media and other digital platforms, potentially damaging an individual’s reputation. Students, as an active and critical age group in using digital media, are at high risk of becoming both targets and spreaders of detrimental information. This study employs a qualitative approach, using in-depth interviews and focus group discussions (FGDs) with students from several universities in Bandung to understand their perspectives on digital media literacy and their responses to information related to character assassination. The results indicate that, while students possess a basic understanding of digital media, many still struggle to identify and counter the spread of inaccurate information, particularly regarding political issues. Furthermore, students tend to underutilize skills in information verification and understanding the negative impacts of disseminating harmful information. Therefore, this study underscores the importance of strengthening digital media literacy to enhance students’ critical abilities in addressing character assassination, with a focus on skills such as source verification, contextual analysis, and ethical information dissemination. This study recommends that digital media literacy be further incorporated into higher education curricula to better prepare students to become responsible and discerning media users in the digital age.

Abstract

Increasing environmental challenges and the growing volume of waste have highlighted the need for sustainable and community-based waste management approaches. However, limited public awareness and lack of practical knowledge remain major barriers to the implementation of circular economy practices at the community level. This study examines the role of knowledge sharing in empowering communities through the implementation of circular waste practices at the Bening Saguling Foundation, West Bandung Regency. The program integrates plastic recycling, maggot-based organic waste processing, and sustainable layer farming as a comprehensive approach to waste utilization and community development. This research employs a qualitative approach with a case study design to explore the processes and impacts of an international community service program (PkM).Data were collected through direct observation, interactive discussions, and participant involvement during the program activities. The findings reveal that knowledge sharing, supported by participatory communication and hands-on practices, significantly enhances community understanding and engagement in circular waste management. Participants demonstrated improved awareness of circular economy principles and the ability to apply waste processing techniques, particularly in utilizing maggots as an alternative feed in layer farming systems. However, the sustainability of program implementation remains a challenge, highlighting the need for continuous mentoring and institutional support. Overall, the integration of knowledge sharing and practical training within a circular framework proves effective in strengthening community capacity and promoting sustainable environmental practices. This study contributes to the development of a replicable model for community empowerment based on integrated waste management.
