Abstract

Several important factors are associated with establishing a healthy island including a healthy social life, food security, and nutrition but in-depth information related to these dimensions is limited. The relationship dimensions include addressing poverty, managing natural and social disasters, handling disabilities, food availability, and food security. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the best model for establishing a healthy island in South Sulawesi. The experiment was carried out on five islands located in three municipalities/regencies in South Sulawesi, namely Tanakeke Island in Takalar Regency, Barrang Caddi Island and Lummu-Lumu Island in Makassar Municipality, as well as Saugi Island and Sapuli Island in Pangkep Regency. The sample consisted of 196 households, while data were analyzed using multivariate analysis through structural equation model tests. The results showed that addressing poverty (t value = 13.77; R2 = 0.75), managing natural and social disasters (t value = 12.15; R2 = 0.61), as well as handling disabilities (t value = 12,53; R2 = 0.64) significantly affected healthy social life. Additionally, food availability (t value = 6.25; R2 = 0.66), and security (t value = 2.72; R2 = 0.85) played key roles in the relationship between food security and nutrition affecting a healthy island. The best indicator of a healthy social life variable was addressing poverty (t value = 13.77; R2 = 0.75). Meanwhile, the best indicator of food security and nutrition variables was food availability (t value = 6.25; R2 = 0.66).

Abstract

Multidrug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) is a significant public health concern in Indonesia, resulting in substantial morbidity and mortality rates. This study aimed to quantify the impact of risk factors of MDR-TB. A case-control study was conducted at Makassar Community Lung Health Center (BBKPM) in Makassar City. A total of 132 respondents, 66 cases, and 66 controls have participated in the study. Data was analyzed using the Stata version 14 tool, odds ratio (OR), and multiple logistic regression. Multiple logistic regression analysis identified significant risk factors for the occurrence of MDR-TB include previous TB treatment (OR=8.46, 95% CI: 3.278-21.858), positive acid-fast bacilli (AFB) sputum (OR=6.40, 95% CI: 2.525-16.260), and adverse drug event (OR=3.45, 95% CI: 1.008-11.867). The probability of developing MDR-TB is 95.9% if there is previous TB treatment with cases of relapse/loss to follow-up/failed treatment, positive AFB sputum, and adverse drug event. The most dominant risk factor for the occurrence of MDR-TB is a previous TB treatment. We suggest that an efficient directly observed treatment shortcourse (DOTS) strategy, particularly in the management of adverse drug event, overseeing and supporting patients who have recovered from MDR-TB, involves the collaboration of MDR-TB healthcare professionals and patient supporters in the Yamali TB community, moving synergistically as an effort to MDR-TB control and prevention.

Abstract

The incidence of hypertension continues to increase. Hypertension is related to lifestyle and nutritional status. This study aimed to analyze blood pressure based on the nutritional status and lifestyle of employees with hypertension. An analytic study with a cross-sectional design was conducted from July to September 2022 by recruiting all Hasanuddin University rectorate employees with hypertension. The total number of respondents in this study was 63 people. Data was collected by measuring blood pressure and anthropometry, while lifestyle risk factors were collected using a questionnaire. Pearson correlation was performed to measure the correlation between blood pressure and nutritional status. A t-test and ANOVA were used to measure differences in blood pressure based on lifestyle. This study found a correlation between Body Mass Index and systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and there was no difference in blood pressure, both systole and diastolic, based on smoking behavior, coffee consumption, stress levels, and physical activity patterns in employees with hypertension. Based on these results, it is recommended that people with hypertension improve their nutritional status and lifestyle.

Abstract

The implementation of this validation aims to investigate the implementation of the field laboratory process of the 2023 Sungguminasa SKI Census Block, Gowa Regency, South Sulawesi. Biomedical process validation is an important step in ensuring sample safety and data validation of SKI 2023. This validation methodology involves observing the implementation of biomedical examinations, dental and oral health of respondents and interviews with medical personnel. The validation results show that the implementation of the biomedical process is quite smooth. The response of respondents was quite good, evidenced by the presence of 28 respondents out of 39 respondents who received informed consent. However, from the officer's side, there was non-compliance with the SOP for dental and oral health examination, such as not encouraging respondents to rinse their mouth and not using lighting according to the inspection SOP standards. This validation process also identifies several recommendations for the smooth implementation of biomedical examinations and dental and oral health, among others, the administrative process and filling out the form/file for the completeness of biomedical examinations by the enumerator team takes a long time, so there is often a time gap between respondents. Therefore, it is recommended that this filling process should be carried out before field laboratory activities begin. In addition, it is necessary to update and socialize SOPs in Dental and Oral Health examinations to local medical personnel.

Abstract

Background: Vitamin D has a role in the body's calcium balance and immunodeficiency effects, and stimulates dendric cells, monocytes, T cells, macrophages in pathogenic microbes’ elimination. The variation occurrence as polymorphism on VDR might cause problem in production, transportation, and activity of vitamin D. The gap between the occurrence findings in previous studies shows that there are indication factors of VDR levels that probably associate with the T2DM range in comorbid with pulmonary tuberculosis. To determine vitamin D levels and factors associated with vitamin D deficiency in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) patients with and without pulmonary Tuberculosis (TB). Method: The design of this study was cross-sectional. T2DM subjects with pulmonary TB were 45 people, and 43 people without pulmonary TB were 43 people. Sampling was done by consecutive sampling from October to December 2017. We collected data through interviews and examination of plasma vitamin D (25-OH) levels by ELISA. Data analysis using the Mann-Whitney test, and chi-square test with a confidence level of 95%. Result: There were 88 T2DM patients who met the inclusion criteria, consisting of 43 T2DM patients without pulmonary TB and 45 T2DM patients with pulmonary TB as the study subjects. There were differences in the distribution of T2DM subjects based on sex and BMI measurements. The mean plasma vitamin D levels in T2DM with pulmonary TB and T2DM without pulmonary TB were 20.08 ng/ml (SD ± 0.83 ng/ml) and 20.29 ng/ml (SD ± 0.81 ng/ml), respectively, we found no significant result in statistic (p = 0.287). Vitamin D deficiency was not associated with the incidence of pulmonary TB in T2DM, whereas female sex, age> 50 years, BMI ? 25.0 kg /m2, and duration of T2DM> 5 years were associated with vitamin D deficiency (p <0.05). This research has contributed in novel findings of the correlation between sex and BMI associated in duration of T2DM impacted the Vitamin D insufficiently. Conclusion: Sex, age, BMI, and duration of T2DM had a significant correlation with vitamin D deficiency in T2DM patients with and without pulmonary TB.
