Abstract

The implementation of the school zoning policy in the student admission system of the lower secondary schools since 2017 aims to promote equal educational access for all pupils in Indonesia. The new policy has been constantly under scrutiny, confusing the grounds, particularly for parents whose kids failed to get admitted. Based on a qualitative study in the typical Indonesian regency of Temanggung, Central Java, the article underscores that the geographical based of school zoning system might have never assured equal education access for all pupils as the available seats in all state-owned public schools combined do not meet the number of prospectus students in the regency per annum. Moreover, there are some different understandings among government officials, particularly regent educational officers, schools’ principals, and teachers, regarding the primary goals of the policy as well as attention to its long-term unintended impacts. Under this zoned student admission system, some traditionally reputable and favorite state-owned public schools have to admit students with diverse academic motivation and performance, including the lower one, which eventually leads them to struggle to maintain academic quality and reputation.

Abstract

The increasing religious conservatism within Indonesian society has propelled the growth of hatred and vigilantism targeting sexual minorities—which are seen as committing an unforgiven sin—especially towards LGBTs (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender). This study addresses the processes that these minorities experience in order to express their sexual identities and forge social relationships with fellow same-sex queers. In specific, this study focuses on the ways young gays begin to understand and develop their sexual identity amidst a largely hostile social environment. By utilizing social media, these young gays have built digital communities for socialising with fellow gay people, as well as to express their sexual orientation while remaining concealed from other parts of society. Yet, by being forced to keep a low profile, they have also been disincentivized from paying attention to promote their civic and citizenship rights. The findings of this study are based on several qualitative interviews with young gays living in the city of Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

Abstract

Crime often occurs. The crime rate in an area will be different from that of other areas according to the characteristics of the area. The clustering carried out in this study is based on the number of reported crime rates. This study aims to cluster crime-prone areas in Yogyakarta City so that they can identify areas to seek to handle them more effectively. The method of this research is ex post facto, which is a quantitative exploratory descriptive. Data was collected through the crime documentation of Yogyakarta City, which has 15 regional units and with crime rates from 2016 to 2020. Clustering is carried out by cluster analysis of the average linkage hierarchy method because the variables are less than 100, so multi-storey clusters are more appropriately used and return to the goal, namely, to identify crime-prone areas. The research results on the crime rate in Yogyakarta City based on data in each reported police unit for five years, namely from 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020, show that the unit area is divided into 3 clusters consisting of clusters 1, 2, and 3. Each cluster has members, namely Cluster 1, Yogyakarta City Resort. Cluster 2 consists of Gondomanan, Ngampilan, Gedongtengen, Jetis, Tegalrejo, Wirobrajan, Kraton, Mantrijeron, Mergangsan, Kotagede, Danurajan and Pakualam. Cluster 3 consists of Umbulharjo and Gondokusuman. So, cluster 1, according to the total number of 5 years, is indeed the most, but for clusters 2 and 3, it is different, so in this clustering, the underlying is the similarity between the variables owned. Crime in the city is often encountered due to the heterogeneity of the community from various fields, so practical efforts must be made to deal with it.

Abstract

The study aims to explore the meanings of gotong-royong, a core national and cultural value in Indonesia, as it is presented and disseminated in the Social Studies curriculum, particularly at the lower secondary level. Since introducing character education in 2017, the Ministry of Education and Culture has sought to promote the value of gotong-royong among students to foster and maintain a peaceful and harmonious society. This research involved a quantitative and qualitative content analysis of 11 Social Studies textbooks published and used in Indonesian schools over the past decade. The analysis examined the forms and meanings of gotong-royong presented to students in various social and cultural contexts. The findings revealed three general meanings associated with gotong-royong: (i) cooperation and social support (56%), (ii) mutual respect for all members of society (33%); and (iii) societal commitment (8%). Although the meanings of gotong-royong are not equally represented, the study found that this value has been readily adopted and integrated into the local and national civic and social values presented in the Social Studies textbooks for lower secondary education.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the role of Endris Foundation as a community-based social institution in assisting underprivileged communities in Gerung District, West Lombok Regency. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation involving 10 informants, including organizational staff and aid recipients. The findings show that Endris Foundation provides two main types of assistance: material support, such as wheelchairs and food packages, and service-based support through medical accompaniment. The wheelchair aid improved mobility for 10 elderly and disabled recipients, while the medical assistance facilitated access to healthcare services for five families. In addition, food distribution helped reduce household economic burdens. Key challenges included family resistance to medical intervention, lack of transparency regarding beneficiary conditions, and communication gaps with village authorities over activity documentation. This study recommends implementing health education for beneficiary families and establishing formal coordination between the foundation and local government to strengthen collaborative efforts. The findings reinforce the vital role of community-based social institutions in addressing disparities in access to basic public services, particularly in areas with limited infrastructure.

Abstract

The establishment of the DPD (Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat or Regional Representative Council) in Indonesia in 2004 has provided individuals and civil society organizations such as Muhammadiyah with the opportunity to participate in the legislative process without formally entering politics. As exemplified by three cases in Yogyakarta, South Sulawesi and West Sumatra, three local Muhammadiyah branches have participated in the last three DPD elections (2004, 2009, and 2014), with each winning a seat each in the 2014 election. This reveals the inherently political nature of civil-cum-Islamic social-religious organizations such as Muhammadiyah, which will manifest itself whenever opportunities become available. Yet, due to different organizational strengths and the social-cultural capital of each local branch office, diverse approaches and political strategies were used to mobilize members and sympathizers, thereby encouraging them to vote.

Abstract

Unplanned pregnancies among teenagers are often perceived merely as a lapse in individual self-discipline. Nevertheless, in Paremono Village, located in Magelang Regency, a community that upholds strong Islamic values, this issue reveals a sociological contradiction. This research seeks to understand why the moral regulations associated with religion fail in deterring risky sexual activities among young people. Employing a qualitative case study method, data were gathered through comprehensive interviews with 20 participants: 10 adolescent girls who are pregnant, 5 parents, and 5 religious leaders. The study's results indicate a breakdown in informal social control structures. Cultural and religious stigmas surrounding sexuality create obstacles to communication within families, resulting in a “reproduction of ignorance.” Consequently, adolescents experience cognitive dissonance: they have theological awareness about what constitutes “sin,” yet lack meaningful moral support to withstand external pressures. Viewed through the framework of Social Learning Theory, the absence of parental and religious guidance is compensated for by peer groups that normalize a liberal dating environment and digital pornography. This research concludes that an abundance of religious symbols does not guarantee moral internalization without engaging in and facilitating open educational discussions. This study suggests enhancing the involvement of religious leaders to reduce the stigma surrounding reproductive health education and to transition the teaching approach from a rigid to a more conversational style.

Abstract

The increasing cases of sexual violence, harassment, and gender-based bullying among adolescents raise questions about the extent to which sexuality education has been integrated into the formal education system. As one of the primary learning resources, textbooks play an important role in shaping students’ understanding of sexuality and social relations. However, the representation of sexuality in school textbooks remains relatively underexplored. This study aims to analyze the representation and transformation of sexuality discourse in Indonesian senior high school sociology textbooks across three curriculum periods: the School-Based Curriculum (KTSP), the 2013 Curriculum, and the Merdeka Curriculum. This research employs a qualitative approach using content analysis of 18 senior high school sociology textbooks to identify how sexuality is represented within the contexts of sexual violence, gender relations, and social deviance. The findings indicate that discussions of sexuality in textbooks remain limited and are generally positioned as a minor part of the topic of social deviance. Sexual violence is mostly presented in a descriptive manner without comprehensive discussion of its psychosocial impacts or preventive strategies. This study contributes by demonstrating how textbook discourse reproduces a limited understanding of sexuality and highlights the importance of integrating more comprehensive sexuality education into sociology learning materials.
