Abstract

This study aims to reconceptualize pesantren and local wisdom as ethnopedagogical models through a systematic review of academic literature published between 2015 and 2025. Using a systematic literature review guided by the PRISMA framework, this study examines Scopus-indexed articles to identify how pesantren and local wisdom are represented in the scholarly literature. It explores the foundations of ethnopedagogy, emerging research trends, thematic patterns, and pedagogical models that arise from integrating Islamic teachings with local cultural practices. The findings indicate that pesantren are increasingly understood not merely as religious educational institutions, but as culturally embedded learning ecosystems. Within these ecosystems, knowledge production, value transmission, and pedagogical practices are shaped by the interaction between Islamic epistemology, local wisdom, and lived social practices. Three interrelated pillars consistently sustain pesantren-based ethnopedagogy: culturally grounded epistemology, experiential pedagogical practices, and value-based social learning. Based on this synthesis, the study proposes a pesantren-based ethnopedagogical model that comprises an epistemological foundation, culturally embedded pedagogical practices, and the internalization of values through lived experience. The study contributes theoretically by extending ethnopedagogical discourse to religion-based education and practically by offering a conceptual framework for culturally responsive Islamic education.

Abstract

This study examines the Manyanggar ritual practiced by the Dayak Bakumpai community in Central Kalimantan as a mechanism for social resilience and conflict resolution. Two research questions guide the inquiry: (1) How does Manyanggar function as a symbolic medium for reinforcing social cohesion? (2) In what ways do community members interpret it as a conflict resolution tool? Drawing on an ethnographic approach, the study integrates in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis conducted during fieldwork in 2018. Findings demonstrate that Manyanggar operates as a ritual of purification and symbolic communication, facilitating social bonding and the negotiation of cultural and religious identities. Drawing on symbolic interactionism and Alatas's concept of articulatory labor, the study examines how Manyanggar has evolved within an Islamic moral framework while preserving its indigenous social functions. These findings contribute to broader scholarly discussions on indigenous knowledge systems, vernacular Islamization, and the role of ritual performance in contemporary peacebuilding.

Abstract

As a global movement, Salafism has transformed the religious landscape of the Malay world, which is commonly associated with moderate religious characteristics. While some scholars have found Malay acceptance of Salafi ideology in Southeast Asia, this article explains Salafi activism in Bangka Belitung and the resistance of traditional religious authorities to it. The paper utilises a qualitative approach, combining library studies of online and offline sources with field research through interviews. A comparative social movement perspective, particularly political opportunity structure and resource mobilisation, was used to gain a holistic comprehension of the topic. The study found that Salafi activism gained momentum with the establishment of Bangka Belitung as a new province and the changing structure of society, which provided room for Salafi activists to mobilise resources in da‘wah (proselytisation) and education. To promote their ideology, recruit followers, and exert influence on Malay society, they conducted various activities, including religious gathering forums and learning circles known as halaqah and dawrah in mosques, the establishment of Islamic schools and pesantren, publication, and the use of communication and information technology. Although it remains small and exclusive, Salafi activism has confronted traditional religious authorities that tend to have a passive, tolerant attitude towards it. In general, they applied two main approaches: a preventive approach against Salafi ideological influence and a defensive approach to protect the internal Malay Muslim community, including strategic actions to avoid internal religious conflicts and maintain peace and harmony in the plural society.
