Abstract

Abstract

During the COVID 19 pandemic, a vast number of universities need to limit their face-to-face teaching activities, including laboratory access. For Geography education students, this situation forced them to use Geographic Information System (GIS) as a major skill set in a virtual learning model, even only with minimum infrastructures such as laptops, mobile phones, and unstable internet connections. In the current study, the perception of undergraduate students from the Geography teaching program at Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto, Central Java, Indonesia, about the effectiveness and readiness of online learning platforms as the impact of the global pandemic were examined. The results showed that students were relatively satisfied and motivated in GIS online learning modules, although classical learning was still preferable. Nevertheless, some students were facing electricity and unstable internet connectivity issues. Finally, in the future, distance learning for GIS teaching programs should be integrated at the national level with sufficient infrastructure support, including supporting training on developing modules and evaluation to increase the student learning experience.

Abstract

The coastal area is currently the epicenter of various disasters, both sporadic and routine, that has an impact on human activities. This study examines the implementation of participatory mapping to improve the spatial ability of coastal communities, especially salt farmers. The approach used is qualitative with the subject of salt farmers in Pangenan District, Cirebon. Data collection on participatory mapping was collected through interviews and Focus Group Discussions on 14 farmer groups. The results of this study explore previous tidal floods (rob) in 2016 and 2018, which caused economic losses for farmers. The two events also provide different risk perceptions; in 2016, farmers who occurred during the harvest season had a greater risk. Meanwhile, the 2018 incident is considered a lower risk because it occurred during the land preparation season.

Abstract

This study carries an analysis related to the pattern of marketing distribution flow of the convection industry in Ledug Village through various levels of marketing channels. Three convection industries, namely Enjoy Apparel, Kayla Jaya Convection, and N Convection, are the main focus in this study. The data collected during the period of 2020 to 2023 becomes material for analysis to understand marketing strategies and adaptations made by the three actors in facing changes in market dynamics. The results of the analysis revealed significant differences in marketing strategy and performance among the three industry players. In zero and single-tier marketing channels, Enjoy Apparel was able to cement impressive distribution growth, reflecting responsive adaptation to fluctuations in domestic and international market demand. On the other hand, Kayla Jaya Convection and N Convection experience more complex performance variations, with repeated periods of increases and decreases. A deeper analysis of level two distribution channels reveals a more detailed shift in marketing strategy. While Enjoy Apparel continues to show steady distribution improvements, Kayla Jaya Convection faces a sharper decline, while N Convection remains at a steady level of performance. In this context, strategic adaptation and the ability to respond to market changes are emerging as decisive factors for maintaining competitiveness in a dynamic industrial environment.

Abstract

This study aimed to reveal the macroeconomic effects of the earthquakes that occurred in Türkiye in February 2023 on the country as a whole, the affected region (covering 11 provinces), and other provinces. Using secondary data obtained from data sets of various institutions, this research firstly attempted to estimate the negative effects of the February Earthquakes on the country’s GDP. The study presents a base scenario using the economic growth forecasts of international organizations such as the IMF and the World Bank for 2023 and 2024 as well as three possible loss scenarios for Türkiye, taking into account the effects of earthquakes of similar magnitude on the GDP in Türkiye and other countries. Furthermore, this study tried to estimate the losses caused by earthquakes in terms of employment, GDP, agriculture, industry, services, and foreign trade at the regional and provincial levels. To do this, we created the Base Scenario, which assumes no earthquake, and Scenario 1, which shows the impact of the earthquake. The findings indicate that, in the worst-case scenario, the country will contract by approximately 2.75%, which means a loss of $8.8 billion. Moreover, the study results point out an average monthly loss of 242 thousand jobs, a loss of $5 billion in GDP, an export loss of $3.5 billion, and an import loss of $4.7 billion in the 11 earthquake-affected provinces. The research underlines the need for comprehensive measures to mitigate the economic consequences caused by earthquakes. This includes disaster prevention plans, effective management strategies and initiatives aimed at strengthening regional economic resilience. Ultimately, the article provides valuable information for policymakers to facilitate informed decisions and the implementation of measures to increase preparedness, risk mitigation, and sustainable recovery in earthquake-prone areas.

Abstract

Cilacap is one of several areas that experienced significant damage due to the Pangandaran tsunami in 2007. Currently, tsunamis are one of the most serious threats to coastal areas as they can cause devastation to the function of coastal areas. The physical environment can extensively affect the probability of damage caused by tsunamis. In addition, it is critical to maintain building stability as a substantial component in the integrated management efforts of coastal areas. The aim of this research is to assess the physical susceptibility and the vulnerability of school buildings to tsunami, particularly senior high school buildings (known as SMA/MA) located in the coastal area of the Cilacap region. This research is essential for the continuity of learning and teaching activities in the coastal area. Therefore, mapping the physical environment and school buildings in the coastal area of the Cilacap region is necessary. In this study, the physical approach method and Papathoma Vulnerability Tsunami Assessment (PVTA) model were optimally applied to assess coastal vulnerabilities to tsunami. Ultimately, the results were further evaluated by using cross-tabulation. The results confirm that specific coastal areas were categorised as having “moderate to high” susceptibility. Simultaneously, owing to the field survey, we determined that school buildings at this location were made of simple reinforced concrete materials. Notwithstanding that the vulnerability of the school buildings were low, the conditions were deemed to be reasonably harmful given that the schools were located in a “moderate to high” susceptibility. The results of this study have implications for the level of potential physical susceptibility of the coastal areas and the vulnerability of school buildings to tsunamis in the Cilacap region.
