Abstract

Physical fitness is a fundamental determinant of athletic performance and is strongly influenced by dietary intake and lifestyle behaviors. Adequate protein consumption is essential for muscle development and energy metabolism, whereas smoking has detrimental effects on lung function and aerobic capacity. This study aimed to explore the relationship between protein intake and smoking habits with physical fitness, measured by maximal oxygen uptake, among athletes of Persela Football Academy under-eighteen. A quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design was applied, involving adolescent male athletes. Protein intake was assessed using a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire, smoking habits were obtained through structured interviews, and maximal oxygen uptake was measured using the multistage fitness test. Findings revealed that the average daily protein intake of athletes was relatively high, while the mean maximal oxygen uptake score fell within the good category. Correlation analysis demonstrated a significant association between protein intake and aerobic fitness, as well as between smoking habits and aerobic fitness. The results indicate that lower protein intake and higher smoking frequency are linked to reduced physical fitness capacity. This study highlights the importance of nutritional interventions and healthy lifestyle promotion as integral components in the development of youth athletes to optimize performance and prevent decline in fitness.

Abstract

Mung bean (Vigna radiata) is a widely consumed legume rich in high-quality protein. The development of enteral formulas using mung beans as a raw material represents a promising alternative nutritional approach for dementia patients with impaired oral intake. This study aimed to investigate the effects of different pre-treatment methods on the nutritional density, physical properties, and amino acid profile of mung bean–based enteral formulas. Three formulations were prepared: boiled mung bean blenderized formula (FA), steamed mung bean blenderized formula (FB), and powdered mung bean blenderized formula (FC). Proximate composition and viscosity were assessed in all formulas. The formula with the highest protein and most favorable proximate profile was further analyzed for amino acid composition and antioxidant activity. Pre-treatment significantly affected energy, protein, fat, carbohydrate, and water content (p <0.05) but not viscosity. The powdered mung bean formula exhibited the highest protein concentration, with glutamic acid (5340.93 µg/g) and isoleucine (3033.71 µg/g) being the most abundant amino acids. It also demonstrated antioxidant activity with an IC50 value of 60,719.07 mg/L.This study provided that the powdered mung bean formula has potential to become an enteral formulation for dementia.

Abstract

Anemia is a common complication in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) undergoing hemodialysis. Anemia in CKD is multifactorial, including impaired erythropoiesis, iron deficiency, and chronic eammation. Adequate nutrient intake plays an essential role in hemoglobin synthesis, anemia management, and improving patient’s quality of life. This study aimed to determine the association between protein, iron, folate, and vitamin C intakes with hemoglobin levels in CKD patients undergoing hemodialysis at Haji Regional Public Hospital, East Java Province. This study used quantitative with cross-sectional design. Purposive sampling was applied, involving 54 respondents who met the inclusion criteria. Data on protein, iron, folate, and vitamin C intakes were collected through direct interviews using semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire on previous month, while hemoglobin data were obtained from the most recent labolatory recods. Bivariate analysis used the Pearson Corelation test for protein intake and Hb level, while the Spearman test for iron, folate, and vitamin C intakes and Hb level. The results showed that protein intake was significantly associated with hemoglobin level (p=<0.001), with a moderate positive correlation (r=0.45). In contrast, iron, folate, and vitamin C intake were not significantly associated with hemoglobin level (p>0.05). Adequate protein intake, [articularly high biological value anemial protein, is required to compenste for protein losses following dialysis. Personalized protein management based on urea burden, metabolic acidosis, phosphorus status, and comorbidities may support improvements in hemoglobin level without exacerbating renal metabolic burden.

Abstract

Background: Physical fitness plays a key role in the performance of adolescent swimmers. However, gaps remain in understanding how body composition and macronutrient intake jointly influence fitness when accounting for individual variability. Research Objectives: This study examines the correlation between macronutrients and body composition with physical fitness in adolescent swimming athletes from Bojonegoro. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 41 adolescent swimmers. Macronutrient intake was assessed using a Semi Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (SQ-FFQ), body composition via Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA), and physical fitness through the Multistage Fitness Test. Spearman correlation and multiple linear regression were used to evaluate associations, adjusting for age, sex, weight, and height. Findings/Results: Physical fitness was positively correlated with skeletal muscle mass and intake of carbohydrates, protein, and fat (p < 0.05), and negatively correlated with total body fat. Demographic variables (age, sex, height) explained 42.7% of physical fitness variability (adjusted R² = 0.427, p < 0.001). Including exercise activities, body composition, and nutrient variables increased R² to 0.597, but the full model was not statistically significant (adjusted R² = 0.404, p = 0.803). Conclusion: Body composition and macronutrient intake are associated with physical fitness, but demographic factors remain the strongest predictors. Individualized training and dietary strategies may support performance optimization in adolescent athletes. Future studies with larger sample sizes and longitudinal designs are recommended to confirm and extend these findings.

Abstract

The management of blood glucose levels in individuals diagnosed with diabetes mellitus is a multifaceted process that involves the integration of pharmacological therapy and evidence-based nutritional interventions. Among these strategies, nutritional therapy plays a pivotal role in achieving optimal glycemic control and preventing diabetes-related complications. The success of nutritional therapy is closely tied to the individual’s adherence to prescribed dietary guidelines and the ability to meet adequate protein intake as recommended by healthcare providers. Protein is essential not only for maintaining muscle mass and supporting metabolic functions but also for its role in stabilizing blood glucose levels through slower glucose absorption and enhanced satiety. This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between dietary adherence and adequate protein intake with fasting blood glucose (FBG) levels among outpatients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus at RSUD dr. Iskak Tulungagung. A quantitative research method with a cross-sectional design was employed, involving 26 respondents selected using a non-probability sampling technique. Data collection utilized structured questionnaires to assess dietary compliance, interview forms to capture dietary behavior and protein intake patterns, and medical record documentation to obtain accurate FBG measurements. Statistical analyses included Pearson correlation tests for normally distributed data and Spearman rho tests for non-normally distributed data, ensuring appropriate analytical rigor. The results indicated a significant negative correlation between both dietary adherence and adequate protein intake with fasting blood glucose levels. This finding suggests that individuals who consistently follow dietary recommendations and consume sufficient protein tend to exhibit lower FBG values, indicating better glycemic control. Such results underscore the importance of not only emphasizing dietary compliance but also ensuring protein adequacy in daily nutritional plans for type 2 diabetes patients. These findings have practical implications for diabetes management programs, highlighting the necessity of sustained patient education, regular counseling, and individualized meal planning.
