Abstract

Background: Irregular menstrual cycles are a risk factor for developing type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) in women. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate irregular menstrual cycles as a risk factor of type 2 DM in women of childbearing age with body fat percentage, waist-hip ratio, diet quality, and physical activity as confounding factors. Methods: This was a case-control study. Its subjects were subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus (n=31) and subjects without any clinical evidence of abnormal glucose regulation (n=31) who attended Puskesmas (Community Health Centre) Rowosari, Tembalang, Semarang with over 30 years of age. Based on their menstrual cycles, they were divided into two groups: women with irregular menstrual cycles, and those with regular menstrual cycles. Cochran Mantel-Haenszel test was used to control their confounding factors. Results: There was an association between irregular menstrual cycles and type 2 DM (p<0.05) with a 7.2 greater risk on women of childbearing age (OR = 7.2, 95% CI=2.18-23.75). By the Cochran Mantel-Haenszel test, the association was still significant; women with over percentage of body fat and central obese with irregular menstrual cycle had 4,85 times and 4,37 times of sequentially greater risk on type 2 DM (OR = 4.85, 95% CI=0.98-23.95 vs OR = 4.37, 95% CI=0.93-20.51).Conclusion: The irregular menstrual cycles was a risk factor of type 2 DM, especially in obese women of childbearing age.

Abstract

Abstract

Excessive weight gain during pregnancy is a risk factor, which can be modified to prevent pregnancy and postpartum complications. Gestational weight gain (GWG) is also influenced by the regulation of nutritional intake and physical activity, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between nutritional intake and physical activity in overweight pregnant women with gestational weight gain. This cross-sectional study was conducted in May and November 2022. A total of 66 overweight/obese pregnant women aged 20 – 40 years at the Public Health Center in Semarang were recruited using a consecutive sampling technique. Data were collected using interviews, questionnaires, and anthropometric measurements.  Data analysis was performed using the Pearson’s correlation, Spearman’s correlation, and linear regression. Pregnant women who were overweight or obese gained an average of 0,42 kg of weight each week, with the bulk of this gain deemed improper (68,2%). Parity (p=0,011; r=-0,309) and sufficient protein consumption (p=0,031; r=-0,266) were associated with GWG. The conclusion is that there will be less weight gain during pregnancy if the protein intake is high.

Abstract

Autism is often associated with macronutrient deficiencies due to food sensory preferences, as well as gluten and casein allergies, which can trigger digestive disorders. In this study, gluten- and casein-free (GFCF) biscuits were developed by substituting kidney bean flour and keluih seed flour, followed by an evaluation of their energy content, macronutrient composition, and sensory characteristics to determine the best formulation. Four formulas were tested: F0 (100:0:0), F1 (30:52.5:17.5), F2 (30:35:35), and F3 (30:17.5:52.5). Macronutrient content was analyzed using standard laboratory methods (Kjeldahl, Soxhlet, and difference), whereas energy was calculated based on macronutrients. The hedonic test involved 50 untrained panelists, and statistical analysis was conducted using One-Way ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis test, and a multi-attribute decision compensatory model. The biscuits contained 432–455 kcal of energy, 3-8% protein, 30-32% fat, and 32-40% carbohydrate. Significant differences were observed in energy (P =0,028), protein (P <0,001), fat (P =0,005), and carbohydrate (P <0,001), as well as sensory preferences for taste (P <0,001), aroma (P =0,002), and overall preference (P =0,017). F1 was selected as the best formulation because of its favorable sensory score and balanced nutrient content. Kidney bean flour improved protein and sensory properties, while keluih seed flour increased energy and fat but lowered preference levels. This product offers practical potential as a GFCF snack to support the dietary management of children with autism.

Abstract

Muscle dysmorphia (MD) has several impacts on the decline in social and health functions. This study aimed to determine the correlation between MD with eating behaviors and exercise loading among fitness center members and analyze the factors affecting it. This study used a cross-sectional design with 100 subjects chosen by a consecutive sampling method at three fitness centers in Semarang City. The subjects were all male members of an active fitness center between 17 and 45 years. The data of MD were obtained using the Drive Muscular Scale (DMS), while eating behavior data were obtained using the Eating Attitude Test-40 (EAT-40) and the training load data, including the duration and frequency of weight training data. Social influence data, self-esteem data, and perfectionism data were obtained using a questionnaire. The findings revealed that 61% of the subjects experienced MD, 80% experienced impaired eating behavior, and 80% consumed supplements. There was a correlation between the occurrence of MD with eating behavior with PR = 2.56 and consumption of supplements with PR = 2.56. The most influential factor on MD was a social influence.

Abstract

Purpose: This scoping review aims to explore the determinants influencing the nutritional status of adolescents with intellectual disabilities, including macronutrient intake, family income, and other contributing factors. Methods: A systematic search was conducted for articles published from 2012 to 2022 in PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Scopus databases, using keywords such as "nutritional status," "dietary intake," "family income," "intellectual disability," and "adolescent". Relevant studies were selected through title and abstract screening, followed by full-text review, resulting in nine articles for analysis. Results: The review found that inadequate dietary intake, particularly high consumption of unhealthy foods, significantly impacts the nutritional status of adolescents with intellectual disabilities. Family income, while affecting food security, does not independently determine dietary outcomes. Comorbid conditions like Down syndrome, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and cerebral palsy, along with physical limitations and the use of psychotropic medications, further contribute to malnutrition risks. Conclusion: Adolescents with intellectual disabilities are at increased risk of malnutrition due to poor food intake. While family income influences food security, it is not the sole factor. The presence of comorbid conditions, physical limitations, and psychotropic medication use is also a key determinant of their nutritional status.

Abstract

Female students in Islamic boarding school are one of the vulnerable groups to experience nutritional problems caused by several factors, one of which is because there are traditions that can change eating patterns. Changes in eating patterns can be caused by fasting traditions, such as Daud and Ngrowot. Objectives: This study aims to analyze the differences in nutritional status and body composition among female students based on type of fasting habits. This research is an observational analytical study with a cross sectional design at API Asri Syubbanul Wathon Islamic Boarding School Tegalrejo, Magelang in female students aged 16-18 years who were selected using stratified random sampling techniques. Subjects were divided into the Daud (n=34), Ngrowot (n=30), Daud and Ngrowot (33), and without Daud Ngrowot (n=31) groups. Data were analyzed using One-Way ANOVA and Kruskall-Wallis test. Most subjects had been fasting for 3 years and the majority of subjects who practiced Daud and Daud Ngrowot fasting rarely did sahur. However, the eating habits of the four groups did not different significantly. The majority of subjects eating twice a day and rarely exercising. Most of the subjects in the four groups had normal nutritional status, muscle mass, and body water percentage, but most subjects had above normal body fat percentage. There was no difference in nutritional status based on BMI/A (p=0.707), MUAC (p=0.594), WC (p=0.372), and WHR (p=0.201) and body composition such as body fat percentage (p=0.393), muscle mass (p=0.403), and total body water percentage (p=0.346) in the four groups. Nutritional status based on BMI/A, MUAC, WC, WHR, body fat percentage, muscle mass, and total body water percentage did not differ significantly between Daud, Ngrowot, Daud with Ngrowot, and without Daud Ngrowot groups.

Abstract

Formulations of biscuits from kedawung seed tempeh flour (Parkia roxburghii G. Don) for diabetes mellitus patientsBackground: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disease characterized by hyperglycemia. Blood glucose can be controlled with food consumption with low glycaemic index (GI) and glycaemic load (GL) values. Kedawung seeds contain high protein and fiber and can be an alternative to low GI and GL food sources for DM patients. Objectives: This research analyzed total protein, crude fiber, glycaemic index, and glycaemic load levels from biscuits by substituting kedawung seed tempeh flour. Methods: The study was an experimental study with four treatments. The substitution of kedawung seed tempeh flour in biscuits was 0%, 10%, 30%, and 50%. Protein content was analyzed using the Kjeldahl method, and crude fiber was analyzed using the gravimetric method. Statistical analysis was done using the One Way ANOVA and Tukey posthoc test. A hedonic test on 25 semi-trained panelists was conducted to determine the best formulation, and the results were analyzed using the Kruskal Walls and Friedman post-hoc test. IAUC analyzed the glycaemic index from 10 respondents. Results: Biscuits substituting kedawung seed tempe flour affected protein content (p=0.00) and crude fiber (p=0.00). The best acceptance was biscuits with a 10% substitution of kedawung seed tempeh flour, which has a 32.28% glycemic index value and a 9.98% glycemic load. Conclusions: The biscuits substituting kedawung seed tempeh flour significantly increased protein and crude fiber content. Biscuit formulation with 10% kedawung seed tempeh flour had a low glycemic index and glycemic load.
