Abstract

The spread of modern concept market development in Indonesia at the end of the 20th century was the cause of the weakening of the empowerment of traditional market traders. Twenty years later, to be precise in the first two decades of the 21st century, advances in digital technology accelerated to penetrate all elements of life in world society. The world becomes folded in the hands of a space and time that is not limited, including borderless in the world of markets. Shopping behavior via digital platforms, whether Shopee, Tik Tok Shop, Lazada, Zalora, is a sign of an era where shopping can be realized anywhere and anytime. This reality is different from traditional markets which interact and transact factually. As a traditional market, Babadan Market in Semarang Regency has been in operation for almost a century. Babadan Market is a pillar of community economic development, because of its ability to accommodate small-scale entrepreneurs, not just in the trader category, but also in the basket category. This article aims to reveal and then identify the socio-cultural values contained in the world of Babadan's "morning" market. Socio-cultural values in any shape or form are unable to stop the market boom.

Abstract

This study aims to produce a narrative about the government's efforts in handling the ongoing smallpox outbreak in Cirebon. Poor living conditions can make it easier for communities to be struck by disease outbreaks. During the Dutch colonial period, infectious diseases caused chaos and concern among the people, one of which was the smallpox epidemic. The spread of smallpox first entered the Java region in the 17th century and reached Cirebon in 1870. The study uses historical methods, namely source collection, critique, interpretation, and historiography. The research focuses on the handling of the smallpox outbreak in Cirebon. This epidemic was triggered by poor sanitation, population density, and regional modernization. The study also highlights the role of vaccination, quarantine, and traditional medicine in efforts to combat the smallpox epidemic, as well as the challenges faced in implementing health policies in the local community. Ultimately, this article shows that efforts to prevent the smallpox outbreak in Cirebon were not entirely effective due to resistance from some parts of the community and poor environmental factors.

Abstract

This study aims to produce a narrative about the process of suburban spatial transformation that occurred in Meteseh-Semarang from 1987 to 2000. The area that was originally hills and agricultural fields changed into a residential area along with increasing urbanization and urban expansion. The increasing need for housing drove this change, the influx of property capital, and spatial planning policies that opened up access to development in suburban areas. This study uses a historical method consisting of heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography using primary sources from Suara Merdeka, Abadi, and Analisa newspapers to reveal the social, economic, and political dynamics that influence the conversion of land from agrarian to residential, and its impact on the local community. The study results show that urbanization in Meteseh changes the physical landscape and triggers social dislocation, spatial segregation, and inequality of access between old residents and newcomers. These findings confirm that the development of suburban areas cannot be separated from market logic and the dominance of formal and informal actors in the production of space. Therefore, this research contributes to understanding the social history of urbanization and the urgency of more inclusive and equitable urban planning.

Abstract

This study examines the Kalitaman Hotel in Salatiga as one of the representations of colonial modernity in a small town. Through historical methods, including heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography, this study successfully presents a historical narrative that a building, such as a hotel, not only functions as a place to stay, but also as a symbol of colonial modernity in terms of architecture and socio-cultural functions. The Kalitaman Hotel was built in a tropical architectural style that adapts to the local climate, but still reflects a European style. This is because Salatiga is a city that is used as one of the residences for Dutch citizens who visit or settle in central Java. In addition, this hotel became an important socio-political and cultural meeting space, both for colonial and local elites. Activities such as dance parties, bridge competitions, and visits by important figures show that this hotel became a meeting point between the social networks of the Dutch East Indies and the local conditions of Salatiga. After independence, the function of the hotel underwent a transformation but remained a strategic social space. This study shows that colonial modernity was not only centered in big cities, but also had a strong influence on small towns like Salatiga.

Abstract

Chinese Muslims face the issue of cultural identity as a double minority. In an existential context, this group is a minority within their ethnic religion, and remains a minority among other ethnicities in Indonesia. This study uses qualitative and quantitative methods to discuss Chinese Muslim politics as an expression of their faith identity in building brotherhood with Muslims in Indonesia while maintaining their cultural identity as ethnic Chinese to avoid alienation within their community. Through this study, it was found that the socio-political life of Chinese Muslims in Jakarta in general, and at the Lautze Mosque in Jakarta in particular, is a manifestation of metropolitan Islam combined with an inclusive Chinese identity. The political vision of Chinese Muslims, expressed by maintaining their cultural background, is also demonstrated through the political movement of Oei Tjeng Hien, which is based on universal Islamic teachings that emphasize human values.

Abstract

This article aims to revisit the emergence of social awareness among the people of Semarang during the flood disaster of 1990. That year, the flood was caused by both natural and non-natural factors. One of the triggers was heavy rainfall, which caused the Kaligarang River to overflow and flood the areas of Sampangan, Simongan, and Bongsari. These three areas suffered significant losses, both material and non-material. In addition, the flood, categorized as a large-scale disaster, or as the community referred to it, a "flash flood," which occurred at 2:00 AM local time, not only shocked the people but also had an extraordinary impact on various aspects. One of the most felt impacts was the social aspect, as many residents lost their homes and belongings. This study uses historical research methods, starting with the collection of primary sources, both written and oral. Written primary sources were mainly found in the Suara Merdeka newspaper from the same year the flood occurred. Meanwhile, oral primary sources were gathered through interviews with three informants. The research findings revealed that the flood in Semarang on January 26, 1990, was able to foster social awareness among the city's residents. This was a condition rarely seen before, as the city's citizens were more individualistic. However, the 1990 flood helped cultivate a sense of solidarity among the city's residents. This solidarity was not only from the local community but also from various groups such as the Health Department, social organizations, corporations, religious organizations, and students. The active participation of many parties created social bonds that became key in forming survival patterns in the city. Keywords : Social Solidarity, Flash Flood, Semarang City

Abstract

This article examines the contestation of urban space in the Simpang Lima area of Semarang from 1975 to 2000 through the perspective of Henri Lefebvre's theory of The Production of Space. Initially designed as a public space for social and cultural activities, Simpang Lima experienced a struggle for space involving the government, private sector, and the community. This study explores how the shift in government policies prioritized public interests, leading to the commercialization of spaces. This transformation was marked by the replacement of public facilities such as sports arenas and meeting halls with commercial buildings like malls and hotels. The impacts of this spatial contestation included the removal of public facilities, the emergence of the informal sector, and increased economic activity. The contestation of space in Simpang Lima highlights the power struggle among various stakeholders, including government authorities, private investors, and the local community. The findings reveal that while commercialization brought economic benefits, it also resulted in social exclusion and the loss of cultural identity. This study emphasizes the transformation of public spaces into private spaces due to the lack of government support for public interests, ultimately benefiting the private sector economically.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the efforts to revitalize the function of Lawang Sewu, transforming it from a building known for its mystical image into a museum utilizing digital technology in the modern era. One of the main focuses of this research is the importance of preserving heritage buildings to raise public awareness, unlock economic potential through tourism, and serve as a symbol of local identity. The study employs a historical method, beginning with data collection from primary sources, both written and oral. Written primary sources were found in the Suara Merdeka newspaper and official decrees issued in the same year. Oral primary sources were gathered through interviews with six museum management staff and ten visitors to the Lawang Sewu Museum. The findings reveal the success of digital technology implemented by PT. KAI and the museum management. Moreover, the building has successfully adapted to the challenges of modern times through physical restoration, repurposing, and rebranding, effectively shedding its mystical image. Restoration efforts involved physical repairs, the addition of accessibility facilities, and the inclusion of artifacts relevant to the history of Indonesian railways. Modern technological applications, such as video mapping, immersive exhibitions, and virtual tours, have significantly enhanced the museum's appeal, particularly for the younger generation accustomed to digital technology.
