Abstract

The research aims at studying the performance of solo organ nowadays popular among Minangkabau people, especially in the wedding ceremony (Baralek) in Padang. The performance is of a new music genre, which in the last two decades has become more and more well-known in the urban area as well as in the rural one. At the beginning, the performance was particularly organized in hotels. A year later in 1984, it was performed in private houses and culminating in 2000 many new solo organ groups emerged in Padang. Malam Bainai and Alek Nak Mudo serve as the main songs played in the traditional procession of welcoming and escorting the bridal couple, while Anak Daro and Marapulai are played when they go to the nuptial seat and when they leave it during the Baralek. The existence of solo organ performance in the ceremony plays important roles as emotional expressions, personal entertainment, symbols, communication, social integrity, physical reaction or productivity stimulation and serves the ritual function. Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to explain the benefits orof thetechnique usesbowing in the practice course of major stringed instruments in the Music Education Study Program, Department of Drama, Faculty of Language and Arts, Padang State University. This type of research is qualitative with descriptive analysis method. The research instrument is the researcher himself. The object of research istechnique bowing in learning major string instruments 1 and 3 in music education study program FBS UNP. The research subjects were students of major string instruments 1 and 3, lecturers of major stringed instruments. Data collection techniques through literature study, observation, interviews and documentation. Data analysis techniques are data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results showed that the use of the Whole Bow (WB) had not been maximized because the strength of the index finger was not strong enough to push the swipe straighter or not controlled. The use of legato has not maximized the results because it has not been able to share the swipe as much because the strength on the index finger is not strong enough to control the swipe. The use of staccato has not maximized the results because a weak index finger in pushing the swipe and a stiff wrist cause friction to be less balanced. The use of spiccato has not maximized the results because the strength of the index finger that is not strong enough to push the friction causes the short length of friction to be less controlled to produce a shorter friction than the staccato. The use of legato staccato has not maximized the results because weak index strength and stiff wrists make friction not evenly distributed and staccato friction is less than optimal. The use of legato spiccato has not maximized the results because it is less able to produce a friction sound that is shorter than staccato due to the weak force on the index finger pushing the bow both up (Up Bow) and down (Down Bow).

Abstract

This article aims to describe and provide an overview of the analysis of the musical structure and violin playing techniques contained in the works in Suzuki Violin Book Volume 1. The research contained in this article uses a qualitative method with a systematic content analysis approach, objectivity, and generalization. The works analyzed in this research are "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star", "Lightly Row", and "Song of the Wind". The results show that the three works are simple works that are appropriate as teaching materials for educators in teaching students who are just learning violin instruments. This is evidenced by violin playing that only uses the A string and E string with 1, 2, 3, and 0 (open string). The works are composed of intervals that make the melody movement dominated by stepping movements rather than jumping. In addition, the techniques that appear in these works are simple techniques such as up-bow, down-bow, tenuto, and staccato, and a little complicated for beginners is syncopation. So, the three works are the right works to learn for beginners.
