Abstract

Customary forests are one of the social forestry program schemes in Indonesia that provide legal access to local communities in forest management by strengthening the local wisdom of customary law communities. The research location is in the Batu Kerbau (buffalo stone) customary forest, Muara Bungo Regency, Jambi Province. The Batu Kerbau customary forest is the first forest formed in Muaro Bungo Regency in 2002. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of customary forest institutions in the management of the Batu Kerbau customary forest. The level of institutional effectiveness of the Batu Kerbau customary forest uses 8 (eight) criteria according to Ostrom (1990). Sampling of respondents was carried out using purposive sampling method so that 25 informants were obtained. Quantitative data analysis is based on the results of filling out the questionnaire which is then analyzed using a Likert Scale and for qualitative data obtained from interviews and descriptions to strengthen the results of quantitative data. The results of the study show that the level of effectiveness of the Batu Kerbau customary forest institution is classified as moderate for the level of existence or existence of customary forest with a percentage score of 61.80%. Some of these factors are divided into 2 factors, namely driving factors and inhibiting factors. The driving factor is in the form of clearly identified boundaries and strict sanctions in accordance with the level of guilt. The weakness factor is that the contribution of customary forests from the economic aspect to the livelihood structure of the Batu Kerbau Keywords : Social forestry, Batu Kerbau customary forest, institutional

Abstract

ABSTRACT Senami Forest is a conservation area with strategic functions, including education, research, socio-cultural development, and tourism.  However, its designation as a forest park is not without its challenges of land conversion and social issues. This study aims to analyze community perceptions of the functions of the Sultan Thaha Syaifuddin Grand Forest Park in Jambi, covering aspects of education, research, socio-cultural roles, as well as tourism and recreation. The research was conducted in Jangga Baru Village, Batin XXIV Subdistrict, Batanghari Regency, from November to December 2023, involving 90 respondents selected through proportional random sampling. Data were collected using a three-point Likert scale questionnaire and analyzed descriptively. The results showed that community perceptions of forest park functions in education (33.33%) and research (33.33%) were in the poor category, while socio-cultural (44.61%) and tourism-recreation (55.60%) were in the moderate category. Overall, the community tends to view the area as more beneficial if converted into plantations, due to limited economic access, low educational levels, and minimal involvement in management activities. These findings highlight the importance of management strategies that actively involve local communities to ensure the balance between conservation, social, and economic functions.   Keywords: batanghari, community perceptions, conservation, forest functions, forest park   ABSTRAK Hutan Senami merupakan kawasan konservasi yang memiliki fungsi strategis yaitu fungsi pendidikan, penelitian, sosial budaya dan wisata. Katakunci: batanghari, fungsi hutan, konservasi, persepsi masyarakat, taman hutan raya

Jujun Village is located in Kerinci Regency and is one of the Integrated Laboratory Villages fostered by Jambi University. Jujun Village is known to have the largest area in Keliling Danau District, and most of its residents work as farmers and have cultivated land. The agroforestry cropping pattern approach has begun to be carried out by the community, especially since the benefits of agroforestry for the community were explained again from an ecological and economic perspective. In the journey of the agroforestry system in Jujun Village, it is necessary to know what its contribution is to community income. Specifically, this study seeks to analyze the contribution of agroforestry to the income and welfare of farmers in Jujun Village. This study ran for 8 months from April to November 2024 and was carried out in Jujun Village. This study uses quantitative and qualitative descriptive methods with an analysis focused on farmers' income and welfare. The results of the study show that farmers have implemented agroforestry on their land with a combination of various types of agricultural and forestry crops. The analysis carried out provides an overview of the contribution of agroforestry to farmers' income in general with varying levels of contribution. The average contribution of agroforestry to total farmer income is 51.97%. The average contribution of agroforestry to total farmer income is 51.97%. Meanwhile, the level of farmer welfare ranges from almost poor (33.33%), sufficient (26.67%), to decent living (23.33%).

Abstract

The density of mangrove cover is one of the factors that influence changes in shoreline both accretion and abrasion. This study aims to determine the effect of changes in density of mangrove cover on shoreline changes in 1989-2018 in the Coastal Province of Jambi. The method used is the interpretation of Landsat satellite images in 1989, 2000 and 2018 using NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) and overlaying images to see shoreline changes and DSAS (Digital Shoreline Analysis System) to calculate the area of change. The results showed that there had been a change in shoreline both accretion and abrasion in several locations that had different mangrove densities in the period 1989-2018. The results showed that accretion occured in 6 locations with an average change of Kota Sebrang 771 m, Tungkal Ilir 240.65 m, Kuala Betara 153.73 m, Mendahara 167.78 m, Kuala Jambi 169.35 m and Nipah 57.3 m, while abrasion occurs at 2 locations with an average change in Sabak Timur -41.8 m and Sadu -36.55 m. Where in the 6 locations that had accretion, mangrove density dominantly was in a close-densed and moderate state and only a few are in a low-densed condition. Meanwhile, the 2 locations that had abrasion were in a moderate state and have a low density mangrove forest.

Abstract

The existence of expanding oil palm plantations is inevitable, as it has contributed significantly to increasing household incomes. However, the continued practice of monoculture oil palm plantations in forest areas poses a critical challenge to the sustainability of the ecosystem. This study aims to analyze farmers’ perceptions and participation in oil palm-based agroforestry management, as well as the relationship. Data collection was conducted through interviews, data were analyzed using a descriptive qualitative approach and a quantitative approach using Chi Square. The variables studied were farmer perception (X) and farmer participation (Y).The study population consisted of members of Forest Farmer Groups (KTH) in the Jangka Benah program a collaborative effort between the Forest Management Unit (KPHP) Unit XVI Tanjung Jabung Barat and the Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) of Jambi Province. This program was implemented in Sungai Penoban Village and involved three farmer groups: KTH Anugerah, KTH Bukit Indah, and KTH Tri Jaya Makmur. The results of the study indicate that although farmers generally have positive perceptions, but the farmer participation is very low. The results of the Chi-Square test indicate that there is no significant relationship between perception and participation in Jangka Benah programs (0.406) with a contingency degree of 0.1 (very weak). The main factor influencing this reluctance was concern over potential economic risks, especially the perceived threat of reduced oil palm productivity. In addition, poor growth of intercrops planted three years earlier further hampered participation, ultimately leading most farmers to discontinue agroforestry practices in their oil palm plantations.

Abstract

Peatland fires in Jambi Province are recurrent, consuming above-ground vegetation and causing large-scale ecosystem damage. Peat ecosystem restoration efforts must begin with rewetting through the construction of canal blocks to inhibit water loss and keep peat soil moist during the dry season. The construction of canal blocks in peatlands has been carried out, including in Jatimulyo Village, Dendang District, East Tanjung Jabung Regency, Jambi Province. Semi-permanent canal bulkhead structures often break down if the water discharge from upstream is very large so that the bulkhead does not last long. The purpose of this activity was to design a model for strengthening canal bulkheads using endemic vegetation species including pulai, jelutong, and gelam planted on the bulkhead body structure. Endemic vegetation planting was carried out in four canals by planting pulai, gelam, and jelutong seedlings. Each canal was planted with a distance of 50x 50 cm so that there were approximately 74 seedlings planted in each canal bulkhead body. This PKM activity is expected to have an ecological impact on peatlands, especially in Jatimulyo Village, both in the short term to strengthen the canal structure and in the long term to maintain a wet state on peatlands.

Abstract

Jati Mulyo Village is one of the villages in Dendang District, East Tanjung Jabung Regency, Jambi Province which is one of the areca nut and pineapple producing areas in Jambi Province. The productivity of areca nut produced is very good but until now areca nut waste has not been optimally processed by farmers. The low knowledge of farmers in processing areca nut waste into soil improver (compost) is an obstacle in the desire of farmers in processing areca nut waste. The purpose of this community service activity is to provide education and training to farmers about the utilisation of areca nut waste into compost as well as the utilisation of the compost to increase areca nut and pineapple production in Jati Mulyo Village. This community service activity includes counselling activities, demonstrations and training, mentoring and evaluation to partners to be able to use the science and technology in the management of areca nut waste.  This community service activity resulted in an increase in farmers' knowledge and skills in making compost made from the main raw material of areca nut waste.
