Abstract

This article examines the social criticism expressed in two literary works: Laskar Pelangi by Andrea Hirata and The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. Using a descriptive qualitative method and an objective approach, the study focuses on analyzing intrinsic elements such as themes, characters, and conflicts within the texts. Laskar Pelangi portrays the social realities in Belitung, Indonesia, highlighting issues such as social inequality and limited access to education while delivering a message of hope and perseverance through the struggles of underprivileged children. In contrast, The Grapes of Wrath captures the hardships faced by migrant farmworker families in the United States during the Great Depression, emphasizing labor exploitation and the importance of social unity. Although the two works emerge from different cultural and historical backgrounds, they converge on the themes of social injustice and the pursuit of societal transformation. The findings demonstrate that literature serves as a powerful medium for articulating social critique and fostering awareness of significant societal issues. This analysis reinforces the role of literary works in illuminating social realities and inspiring critical reflection among readers. The research employs an objective study method to ensure an impartial evaluation of the texts' intrinsic elements.

Abstract

This study aims to develop and strengthen students’ nationalistic awareness through a literature learning model that integrates Indonesian national songs—Indonesia Pusaka, Syukur, Gugur Bunga, and Sepasang Mata Bola—using Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL). The focus is on embedding values of patriotism and love of the nation while enhancing language learning in a digital learning environment. The research employs a quantitative design with a simple experimental approach. Data were collected through pre-test and post-test to measure students’ level of nationalistic understanding and language comprehension before and after the implementation of the model. The participants consisted of undergraduate students in an English education program who were introduced to the lyrical and cultural dimensions of the songs via mobile learning applications. Findings indicate a significant improvement in students’ comprehension and appreciation of the patriotic values embedded in the selected songs. The post-test results demonstrated higher scores compared to the pre-test, showing that students not only acquired better linguistic understanding but also developed a deeper sense of national pride and identity. The use of MALL provided flexibility, accessibility, and interactive engagement, making literature learning more effective and appealing to digital-native students.

Abstract

This research aimed to reveal how commitment and communication are revealed as parts of faithfulness were portrayed in the movie I Still Believe, which told the true story of Christian singer Jeremy Camp. Using a qualitative approach, this study analyzed commitment and communication as parts of faithfulness through the lens of Abrams' (1979) objective theory. The data, derived from the film, highlighted two key aspects of faithfulness; commitment and communication both connected to God and spouse. These elements collectively illustrated faithfulness as a deliberate choice rather than an emotional reaction. Faithfulness to God was portrayed as unwavering trust and dependence on divine guidance, even in times of suffering. Likewise, faithfulness in human relationships mirrored this devotion through patience, trust, and perseverance. The film underscored that true faithfulness was not about seeking immediate answers but about surrendering to a higher plan. Ultimately, I Still Believe demonstrated that faithfulness strengthened both spiritual and personal bonds, shaping character and resilience in the face of adversity.

While undertaking the analysis for this academic work, the writer concentrates exclusively on the research questions previously defined. The study gives prominence to Jennifer Lee's leading character, Elsa, with an emphasis on examining her nature and the emotions she undergoes. The selected method for this investigation is qualitative research, due to the fact that the gathered information exists as quotations and explanations. The details analysed in this research were extracted from the film Frozen by Jennifer Lee, which served as the primary material, and were supplemented with supporting information obtained from applicable materials like books, articles, and other resources that cover emotional experiences, functioning as supporting sources. The research identified Elsa's persona as being a powerful and inward-focused individual. This particular persona has a significant influence on the advancement of the plot and the evolution of other figures. Additionally, Elsa tends to respond to issues by steering clear, paying them no mind, and keeping her thoughts and feelings locked up inside, creating difficulties in controlling her emotional state. Subsequently, having established this portrayal, the aim of the author's study is to recognize and thoroughly understand the emotions represented by Elsa's character within the animated movie Frozen. Drawing on the findings, the writer reached the conclusion that the primary emotions that are apparent within her experience are positive emotions such as joy and contentment, as well as negative emotions such as dread, rage, and sorrow. Notably, Elsa's surrounding environment triggers each one of these feelings.
