Abstract

Abstract

This community service project aims to address the serious environmental threat to Lake Toba caused by the massive proliferation of water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes), while also offering an economic solution for the surrounding community by utilizing it as a fermented probiotic feed with high monetary value. Lake Toba, as a Super Priority Tourism Destination, requires an integrated waste management solution. The implementation method for this activity involves participatory socialization and live demonstrations, with 50 participants from fish farmers, entrepreneurs, and housewives in the Sibola Hotasas Village area, Balige, North Sumatra Province. The main material presented included identifying water hyacinth nutrients and simple probiotic feed production techniques using probiotic bacteria and molasses. The questionnaire evaluation results showed a significant increase in participants' knowledge, with the average understanding score rising from 45% to 90%, indicating successful technology transfer. The use of water hyacinth as probiotic feed not only contributes to efforts to mitigate ecological waste in Lake Toba waters but also provides a direct economic impact through potential savings in animal feed costs compared to commercial feed. It is hoped that this activity will be the first step toward establishing a communal business unit based on water hyacinth recycling, serving as a model of environmental and economic sustainability for the Lake Toba community.

Abstract

Many high school students consider chemistry to be a difficult subject. Most students still have difficulty understanding chemical concepts comprehensively, but the obstacles they experience have not been fully identified by teachers. Chemistry is one of the subjects that is less favored by students, because science, especially chemistry, is studied abstract things. Students' difficulties in learning chemistry result in many students experiencing failure in learning chemistry material. This study aims to describe and explain various learning difficulties and the factors causing difficulties in learning chemistry experienced by high school students. This study involved 44 students from all grades XII MIA and one chemistry teacher as the subjects. This study used a phenomenological research type with a qualitative approach. The data collection process was carried out using document study methods, observation, questionnaires, and interviews. Based on the results of the study, the level of student learning difficulties is categorized as slightly difficult (43%), quite difficult (48%), and difficult (9%). Internal factors that cause learning difficulties include a lack of understanding of chemistry material, low mathematical ability, and minimal motivation in learning chemistry. External factors that influence learning difficulties include the teacher's teaching methods, the negative impact of socializing with peers, and less conducive learning situations and times.

Abstract

Project-based learning is a learning strategy where students must build their own content knowledge and demonstrate new understanding gained through various forms of representation. Learning containing ethnoscience based on local wisdom, invites students to be close to their surrounding environment and be able to understand the phenomena that occur around them so that they can create a generation of products that are responsive and sensitive to the social and cultural environment of the nation. Chemistry learning can be integrated into ethnoscience because it involves contextual experiences in everyday life about local wisdom as learning materials and phenomena that exist in society. This study aims to develop interactive teaching materials based on projects and ethnoscience on the material of reaction rates that can improve students' creative thinking skills. This study uses the type of Research and Development (R&D) development research, with the ADDIE model. Data collection techniques are observation techniques, written tests, questionnaires and documentation. The results of the study obtained: (1) The proportion of students' creative thinking skills completion in the experimental class and control class is more than 75%; (2) The average creative thinking skills of students using interactive teaching materials based on projects and ethnoscience on the material of reaction rates is greater than the completion value.; (3) Analysis of two-way tests proves that the application of interactive project-based and ethnoscience-based teaching materials on reaction rate material has an effect on students' creative thinking skills; (4) Analysis of the N-Gain test of the experimental class and control class shows a moderate increase, namely 0.4 and 0.3.
