Abstract

This study aims to reveal students' understanding of prepositions and describe the types that often confuse students. Field research is the activity of collecting baseline data for research purposes. This research was conducted using tests, questionnaires, interviews, and direct observation. In this method, the author gives a test essay consisting of 30 questions. The test was given to 50 Xi SMA Hang Tuah Makassar class students to determine their understanding of English prepositions. The author proposes a questionnaire that attempts to identify the methods of language learning by students and the experience of students in learning languages. The author presents a questionnaire that attempts to identify the processes of language learning by students and the experience of students in learning languages.A preposition is a type of adjective that usually precedes its object. Prepositional properties include words expressing spatial relationships, such as y, in, on, under, over, too, from, through, etc. A noun always follows prepositions. These conjunctions show the relationship between the nouns that follow them and one of the main elements of the sentence. The noun or pronoun after the preposition is the object. The pronoun used in this position is always the object pronoun. This study showed that the average yield. of the correct answer for prepositions of place using in, on, and at can be calculated as 368/50 = 7.36. The result of using the wrong preposition is 382/50 = 7.64. These calculations show that the number of respondents who do not know how to use prepositions correctly is more excellent than those who do. Overall, this study shows that students' ability to use the prepositions in, on, and at to indicate time and place still needs to improve. But the average difference between correct and incorrect use is minimal. In other words, the results show that the ability to use prepositions in the XI SMA Hang Tuah Makassar class as respondents in this study were average.

Abstract

Although it seems straightforward, using conjunctions in recount text writing poses a serious challenge for Indonesian EFL learners who continue to use them incorrectly. This current research aims to identify and describe EFL learners’ types and causes of conjunction errors in writing recount texts. This research relays on a mixed-methods research design where 27 participants were 10th-grade EFL learners of SMK Muhammadiyah Berbah in the 2022/2023 academic year. Data were collected through documents and interviews. The collected data were analyzed both qualitatively and quantitatively. Qualitative analysis was used to discover EFL learners' types and causes of conjunction errors in writing recount text. In contrast, quantitative analysis was used to present the number and percentage of EFL learners' errors. This research shows that EFL learners make four types of errors in using conjunctions to write recount text. The types of errors consist of 55.81% omission errors, 23.25% unnecessary addition errors, 18.60% misuse errors, and 2.32% repetition errors. Ignorance of rule restrictions causes EFL learners to make errors of misuse, unnecessary addition, and excessive repetition. Meanwhile, the incomplete application of the rules caused EFL learners to make omission errors.

Abstract

Pollen can be used for plant identification because it has a distinctive structure and ornamentation, besides that it can also be used as a plant breeding agent as a contributor to male parental characters. The character of pollen as parental male is very important in plant breeding. One way to know the quality of pollen is to look at its viability. Pollen viability can be tested by staining method or by germination method. Pollen viability is known to be lost over a certain period of time. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of storage time on viability of soybean pollen, and to determine the best storage period with the highest viability of soybean pollen. This research was conducted experimentally with a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of 4 treatments, namely P0, Control. P1, 7 days of storage. P2, 14 days of storage. P3, 21 days of storage. The independent variable is variation in storage time while the dependent variable is pollen viability. The parameters observed were the number of stained pollen, germination capacity, and the length of the germinating pollen tube as evidence that the pollen was viable. The research data obtained were analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) with an error rate of 5%, then continued with the BNT test with an error rate of 5%. The results showed that the provision of storage time treatment on soybean pollen had an effect on pollen viability, namely by reducing pollen viability. The best shelf life to get the highest pollen viability in soybean pollen is 0 to 7 days after the sample is taken.

Abstract

Nepenthes adrianii is an endemic species of Mount Slamet. The existence of this species has begun to be threatened. This situation encourages efforts to conserve N. adrianii, which is through propagation using stem cuttings of N. adrianii. In order for the propagation of stem cuttings to grow properly, it is necessary to add growth hormone (ZPT) from the auxin group such as NAA (Napthalene Acetic Acid). This research has been conducted to study the effect of NAA and its effective consentration for the growth of N. adrianiistem cuttings. This research was conducted using experimental methods. The experimental design used was a Randomized Completely Block Design (RCBD). The block in this study is total leaves per cuttings. Block 1 is the leafless cuttings, block 2 is cuttings with one leaf, block 3 is cuttings with two leaves, and block 4 is cuttings with three leaves. The NAA concentrations in this study are 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 ppm. There are a total of 24 experimental units. The variable observed was the growth of N. adrianii stem cuttings. Parameters observed in this study are days taken for sprouting, number of shoots, number of leaves, leaf length, and leaf width. The results were analyzed using Variety Analysis and then analyzed with Tukey's test at the test level of 0.05 at the time of significant treatment. The results showed that the application of NAA did not affect the growth of the stem cuttings of N. adrianii. The best concentration of NAA could not be determined because there was no effect of NAA on the growth of N. adrianii stem cuttings.

Abstract

Researching the speech acts performed between Arabic and English speakers is one of the popular trends in pragmatic research. However, the majority of previous studies have only obtained data from native Arabic and English speakers, or Arabic natives who are learning English as a foreign language. This study intends to fill the research gap of comparing the speech acts of giving praise and responding to praise made by students who are studying both English and Arabic as their foreign languages. This descriptive study used two instruments, namely a discourse completion task questionnaire consisting of twelve scenarios and an interview, involving 70 English learners and 70 Arabic learners from UIN Alauddin Makassar which is the only university in Indonesia that offers the unique Foreign Language Intensification Development (PIBA) program. Results have determined that the dominant praise strategies of Arabic learners are awe and congratulating, while English learners tend to use surprise and congratulating strategies. Both language learners dominantly use the strategies of giving appreciation and reassigning praises as their praise response strategies. This study concluded that Arabic foreign language learners tend to have a small repertoire of praise and praise response strategies, while English foreign language learners’ arsenal of strategies is much more diverse.

Abstract

Exploring the cultural pragmatic speech of the Makassar people of various ages and genders is a popular trend in current pragmatic research. However, most of the previous studies have only obtained data from speakers of different genders and ages and have not addressed the cultural influences that influence them. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to fill in the gaps of previous research by showing that the dominant culture greatly influences verbal actions in response to praise from people living in Makassar, children, adolescents and adults. Three instruments are used in this descriptive research: observations, surveys and interviews with 15 adults, 15 youth and 15 children. The results show that Makassar culture influences the proportion of compliments used by Makassar people. 87% of female responses received praise in adulthood, 13% avoid praise, and 82% of female responses receive praise and 18% avoid praise in adolescence. In adulthood, 60% of their responses are praise, 40% avoid praise, 80% of men respond to praise, 20% reject praise, and 100% of boys accept praise.
