Abstract

The field of ESP teaching has undergone a revolutionary transformation with the integration of ICT tools and other authentic materials. These resources have proven to be invaluable to learners as they enable real-life interactions with native speakers. Various studies have explored the challenges faced by teachers and learners in ESP teaching situations. Therefore, this paper aims to describe the effectiveness of reading authentic materials toward the reading proficiency of psychology department students.   The study was conducted at the Psychology Department of Universitas Wijaya Putra. The students participated in 14 meetings, during which the experimental group was exposed to authentic reading materials and the control cluster received streamlined materials, a pre-test and post-test of the reading comprehension test were given to the students. The marks obtained were analyzed using SPPS and the students were given a set of tasks that included 50 multiple-choice questions and 10 essay questions. The research results revealed that the mean deviation score for the experimental group was 80, while it was 65 for the control group. Consequently. This provides evidence supporting the acceptance of the hypothesis, indicating an improvement in student performance after receiving the treatment. Specifically, the results revealed that exposure to authentic materials improved the reading proficiency of psychology department students

Abstract

This research explores how discourse, actors, societal structures, power dynamics, and illocutionary acts play significant roles in shaping communication and influencing individuals' beliefs and attitudes. It emphasizes the importance of analyzing language and social interactions to gain a deeper understanding of how power and meaning are constructed and perpetuated in society. The researcher employed the concept of code-switching to interpret the film "The Judge" and derive insights into the dynamics of power within it. Social interaction and language were scrutinized through Communication Discourse Analysis (CDA), with van Dijk's Critical Discourse Analysis serving as the overarching theoretical framework, addressing core aspects such as grammar, metaphor, intonation, social cognition, and societal structures. A descriptive qualitative approach was utilized for data analysis. The film's script was referenced extensively. The researcher focused on the protagonist due to the significance of their remarks in shaping social relations and legal contexts. The investigation uncovered instances of power dynamics, including the manipulation and coercion employed by key figures. These protagonists exploited their authority within the community to dictate agendas.

Abstract

This study employs a qualitative research design to examine the representation of masculinity in the film "Padman" through a semiotic analysis. Utilizing Barthes' semiotic framework, the research explores how denotative, connotative, and mythic elements construct the character of Lakshminkant, played by Akshay Kumar. The analysis reveals that Lakshminkant embodies a form of masculinity that diverges from traditional portrayals, emphasizing empathy, resilience, and innovation over physical strength and aggression. Visual cues such as his traditional attire and confident yet humble body language, alongside his engagement in physical labor, highlight his connection to rural roots and industrious nature. His focus on menstrual hygiene, a taboo subject in many parts of India, challenges patriarchal norms and promotes gender equality. The study finds that Lakshminkant's character redefines heroism by aligning it with perseverance, moral courage, and social innovation. This redefinition challenges hegemonic masculinity and offers a progressive model of manhood that values emotional and social intelligence. Additionally, the film's portrayal of Lakshminkant as a benevolent innovator underscores the potential of individuals to drive social change, suggesting that modernity can coexist with traditional values. Theoretical application of Barthes' semiotic framework proved effective in uncovering the layers of meaning within the film, providing a comprehensive understanding of its portrayal of masculinity. This research contributes to the discourse on gender roles in Indian cinema and highlights the importance of inclusive representations in promoting societal change.

Abstract

High Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) have been a topic of discussion among educators in Indonesia in recent years. The awareness of the importance of making test questions that contain HOTS is getting higher after seeing the test results of Indonesian students in several international standardized test events such as the Program of International Student Assessment (PISA) and Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS). It is a fact that PISA test and evaluation, the performance of Indonesian students is still relatively low. Consecutively, the average achievement scores of Indonesian students were ranked 62, 61, and 63 out of 69 countries evaluated. The fact drives this community service is done to enhance teachers’ competence in integrating HOTS into assessment, particularly in reading skills. The aim of this community service is to mentor Senior High School teachers who teach English Subjects with advanced skills to construct item tests that emphasize higher-order thinking skills in reading skills. The methods employed to achieve the goal are mentoring and focus group discussions. The result of this supervision is the increased ability of teachers in developing assessment of reading skills. This can be seen when the initial observation of the assessment of learning collected and analyzed was seen to have HOTS elements only 50%, and after the supervision and Focus Group Discussions were held, the ability was seen to increase to 80%, which means that the reading assessment created by Wijaya Putra High School teachers contain HOTS questions much higher than the initial conditions. In conclusion, this service activity is able to improve teachers' skills in developing HOTS-in reading assessments.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the 'need analysis' of English for Psychology courses and evaluate the ESP textbook from the point of view of the textbook users at the Faculty of Psychology. A need analysis survey in learning ESP and ESP textbook evaluation was conducted and then analyzed quantitively. The data sources of this research were students of the Faculty of Psychology who were taken by purposive sampling, which amounted to 20 people already in the 4th, 6th, and 8th semesters, the head of the Psychology department, and three lecturers in the Psychology Faculty. The data collection used was a questionnaire and documentation. The data is in the form of questionnaire results and interviews. Documentation technique is used in collecting data, while analysis technique is used in analyzing data, namely reduction, data display, and drawing conclusions and verification. The study results show that language skill materials are crucial for future Psychology students. Regarding speaking skills, students primarily require resources for conversing with current issues that are up-to-date. Regarding the students' need to access psychology journals and textbooks, writing and skills in composing scientific articles, reports, and lab documents are essential. However, the study reveals dissatisfaction among Psychology students with the current ESP textbook, particularly in appearance, visuals, design, layout, and writing materials. Despite some elements meeting their needs, such as layout, content, exercises, and speaking resources, improvements are needed in certain areas. Consequently, it is recommended that the ESP textbook be enhanced to better cater to these requirements, and future researchers undertaking similar studies should consider this focus on English for Specific Purposes (ESP).

Abstract

Movies are a potent medium for learning, as they are not only accessible but also have the capability to shape behaviour and provoke meaningful conversations. It is crucial to recognize that not all cinematic content promotes positive examples; some scenes reinforce negative portrayals and harmful stereotypes. This study decisively examines the gender dynamics in the Walt Disney Company film "Brave," which exemplifies the persistent issue of gender stereotypes in media. The primary objective of this research is to assertively analyse the gender roles depicted in children's films, with a particular focus on Merida’s character in "Brave." A qualitative research approach is adopted, employing a thorough methodology that includes multiple viewings of the film, detailed summary readings, extensive note-taking, script interpretation, identification of key terms and dialogues, and review of pertinent academic journals and articles online. This study delves into the gender dynamics presented in the Walt Disney Company’s animated film "Brave," which serves as a compelling example of the lingering issue of gender stereotypes in media. The primary goal of this research is to critically assess the gender roles depicted in children's films, with a particular emphasis on the character of Merida in "Brave." It seeks to understand how Merida challenges traditional gender expectations and whether she ultimately conforms to established gender norms. The research questions are designed to scrutinize the characteristics of Princess Merida. The findings reveal that Merida embodies ten distinct masculine traits, illustrating her complexity as a character who defies conventional expectations of femininity.

Abstract

In the current independent learning curriculum of the independent campus, learning in Higher Education has shifted to being based on internet digitalization. SPADA, which will be developed, is an application owned by Wijaya Putra University, which is located at spada.uwp.ac.id. The combination of project-based learning that implements hybrid learning is learning simultaneously online and offline. The problem formulation is formulated: How is the feasibility of developing a project-based hybrid learning model based on the SPADA application for student learning? How can the project-based hybrid learning model based on the SPADA application improve students' self-regulated learning abilities? This study aims To produce the feasibility of developing a project-based hybrid learning model based on the SPADA application for student learning and To explain the project-based hybrid learning model based on SPADA in improving students' self-regulated learning abilities. The research method uses an experimental approach with pretest and posttest. Based on the research results, the project-based hybrid learning model based on the SPADA application to improve the self-regulated learning abilities of Wijaya Putra University students is very effective. This is because the self-regulated learning ability for the goal-setting indicator has increased by 0.98, the environment setting indicator has increased by 0.90, the task strategy indicator has increased by 1.06, the time management indicator has increased by 1.32, the help-seeking indicator has increased by 1.81, and for the self-evaluation indicator has increased by 1.14. The implications of the findings in this study reinforce that knowledge and skills in self-regulated learning abilities are very much needed to support educational models and processes that are increasingly disrupting traditional methods by knowing the selection of digital learning resources and can encourage efforts to improve abilities in self-regulated learning abilities.
