Abstract

Forest damage in any ways will determine all of the organism inside include the birds. Forest restoration is a positive step that would help to recover back the forest. Bird is one of bio-indicator of forest condition. This research was needed not only to compare the diversity of  birds between restoration area and primary forest (middle and edge forest), but also to know the species of birds which could adapt in both areas. The research was conducted in June – July 2012 at Sei Betung Resort, based on the IPA (Indices Ponctuels d’Abondence) or Point Count method. The result showed that bird diversity index in middle forest is 3,586 as well as in edge forest is 3,554. Both results are categorized as high diversity level, while the restoration area is categorized as middle diversity level with 3,095 index value. Some birds were founded in both areas such as Wreathed hornbill (Aceros undulatus), Emerald dove (Chalcophaps indica), Black magpie (Platysmurus leucopterus), Short-toed coucal (Centropus rectunguis ), Greater coucal (Centropus sinensis), Lesser coucal (Centropus bengalensis), Buff-rumped Woodpecker (Meiglyptes tristis), Rufous woodpecker (Celeus brachyurus), Red-breasted parakeet (Psittacula alexandri), Yellow-vented bulbul (Phycnonotus goiavier), Cream-vented bulbul (Pycnonotus simplex), Black-headed Bulbul (Pycnonotus atriceps), Red-whiskered bulbul (Pycnonotus jocosus), Ashy tailorbird (Orthotomus ruficeps), Rufous-tailed tailorbird (Orthotomus sericeus), Magpie robin (Copsychus saularis). Abstract

Mudflat and mangrove ecosystem both are the migratory bird habitat. This research was  counting  the index of diversity migratory shorebirds East Coastal of Deli Serdang District, Province of North Sumatra. The result showed  value average  an index of diversity  with medium category (H' 2.03). The highest diversity (H' = 2.12) was found at Bagan Percut and the lowest (H' = 1.94) found at Pantai Ancol. Included in medium category, the diversity of migratory shorebirds influenced by mudflat condition. Keywords: mudflat, migratory birds, mangrove, coastal area.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to account  the economic value of Hot Spring Nature Tourism Object at Siogung-ogung Village, Samosir Regency with using the travel cost and willingness to pay method.   The economic value of Hot Spring Nature Tourism Object, Siogung-ogung Village, Samosir Regency by using the travel cost method is Rp 11.108.505.560/year and willingness to pay method existing conditions Rp 1.000,- until Rp 5.000,- and willingnessto pay with addition facility and management with around Rp 15.000,- until Rp 11.000,-. Abstract

Research on "Analysis of the Trees and Nest Characteristics of Sumatran Orangutan (Pongo abelii) in Bukit Lawang Langkat District" was conducted in July until September 2012 at Pusat Pengamatan Orangutan Sumatera (PPOS) in Bukit Lawang, Bahorok, Langkat District. This study aims to investigate the characteristics of the nest tree and Sumatran Orangutan (Pongo abelii) based on age level and gender. Research method used line transect and focal animal sampling. Some characteristics of the Orangutans trees most often found in meranti trees (Shorea sp.) as Orangutans nest and feed, with hight 20-25 m, diameter 20-30 cm, branch pattern is adjacent and type of canofy is spherical, nest high 16-25 m. The position of the nest is most commonly found nesting in position III and nest type is B. There are differences and similarities between Orangutan who were subjected to experiments in determining the type of nest trees, nest trees high, nest trees diameter, nest high and position of nest. Abstract

The research about the value of potential and  attraction of tourism object in Linting Lake area hasn’t been never conducted. The research has aims to analyzed the potential and attraction of nature tourism in Linting Lake area and community appraisal in developing the tourism village in Linting Lake area. Questioneries involved the visitors, the public, staff of the Forest Ministry, and staff of Tourism Ministry. The results of the research showed that the potential of natural resources in Sibunga –bunga village are hot water sources, caves, and lime stones. Evaluation of object and tourism attraction is categorized to be feasible for further development. People are willing to participate in developing their village to be one of the tourism village. Abstract

Industrial Forest Plantation when viewed from storing carbon productivity (per unit area and per unit time) then there is a possibility of plantations will have the ability to store carbon in their stend in greater numbers than in natural forests because they have shorter cycle. The purpose of this study was to investigate and mapping the potential content of biomass, carbon storage and uptake of CO2 of Eucalyptus grandis stends Industrial Forest Plantation in PT. Toba Pulp Lestari Tbk. Sector Aek Nauli, Simalungun District, North Sumatra. The method of data calculation was using the model Allometric of Eucalyptus spp stand.There are four species of eucalyptus met at PT. Toba Pulp Lestari Tbk. Aek Nauli sector namely Eucalyptus hybrid, Eucalyptus grandis, Eucalyptus pelita and Eucalyptus urophylla.The results showed total biomass in Eucalyptus grandis has amounted to 8,4528 tons/ha, carbon storage at 3,8759 tons/ha, and absorption of CO2 at 14,2245 tonsCO2/ha. Abstract

Research on "The mitigation of wildlife-communities conflict in Gunung Leuser National Park" was conducted in July until August 2012. This research aimed to identify any factors caused wildlife that often enter into community plantations, to calculate the economic losses due to conflicts with wildlife and to analysis of wildlife handling by the communities. The method used in this research are observation, filling questionnaires and interviews to people directly. The results of this research are the factors that cause conflicts between wildlife with communities which the habitat destruction due to forest encroachment and the level of wildlife preference for the type of plant. The treatment used by communities to overcome the damage and economic loss are making sounds like fireworks, cheers by the owner of the land, shoot the animals with a pellet gun, maintained, done by making a trap or snare, made ​​a bonfire and leave it. Average economic losses of crops in the Timbang Lawan and Timbang Jaya villages are Rp. 104.090,00/person/month, while average annual economic losses of crops in Timbang Lawan and Timbang Jaya villages are Rp.25.465,00/person/month. Abstract

Indonesia's tropical forests is one of the richest in natural resources of orchids. North Sumatra is a suitable place for growing orchids. This study aims to inventory the orchids based on altitude in Siranggas Wildlife Kecupak I Village, Pergetteng-getteng Sengkut Subdistrick, Pakpak Bharat. Plots were determined by purposive sampling. The Observation of vegetation used line plot transect which divided in 3 locations with different altitude interval : 800 – 900 meter above sea level (m asl), 1.000 – 1.100 m asl and  1.200 – 1.300 m asl, measuring plot 20 m x 100 m, divided in to 5 subplots measuring 20 m x 20 m. The result found 54 species of orchids at Siranggas Wildlife from 21 genus, which there were 15 species of terrestrial orchids, 37 species of epiphytic orchids and 2 species os saprophyte. The highest of important value index (IVI) was 41,722% on Dendrobium tertraedre and the lowest was 0,884% on Vanilla sp. 1, Vanilla sp. 3 and Phaius sp 1. Abstract

Pitcher plant (Nepenthes spp.) is one of the unique carnivorous plant species, the numbers continue to decline in the wild. Habitat destruction caused by human activities and un cultivated exploitation as an ornamental plant threatened its existence. This study aims to invent and determine species diversity of Pitcher plant (Nepenthes spp.) in the area of Siranggas Wildlife Reserve . The study was conducted at a height categories: 900 – 1.000 meter above see level (m asl) (found 6 types Nepenthes Nepenthes grasilis; Nepenthes mirabilis; Nepenthes tobaica; Nepenthes sp.1 ; Nepenthes sp. 2; and Nepenthes sp. 3),  1.100- 1.200 m asl (none of Nepenthes) and 1.200 – 1.300 m asl (found 3 types of  Nepenthes; Nepenthes reindwardtiana, Nepenthes rhombicaulis and Nepenthes tobaica). Observation ware conducted on three different lines in each height category. Observation path length was 100 m. Determination of the first track was done with purposive sampling method, the next track was determined by systematic sampling. Observation of Nepenthes spp. used of sampling plots 20 m x 20 m. Nepenthes spp. found 8 types of Nepenthes grasilis, Nepenthes mirabilis, Nepenthes reinwardtiana, Nepenthes rhombicaulis, Nepenthes tobaica, and 3 types were unknown (sp.1, sp.2, sp.3).Keywords: Nepenthes spp., Siranggas Wildlife Reserve, Exploitation.

Abstract

The population of Sumatran Orangutan (Pongo abelii) decreases due to forest conversion. In addition, the availability of feed orangutans also declining so much potential extinction of the Sumatran orangutan if this trend continues. This study aims to determine the productivity of the tree of the Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii) and ecological niche in the area of Sumatran Orangutan Observation Center (PPOS), Bukit Lawang. This study was conducted for 3 months observations performed every week. The result showed that the productivity of the tree of sumatran orangutan lowest for the urinary tree (Quercuss sumatrana) while the highest species productivity found in the forest of mango trees (Mangifera indica). Animal species found in the hills of mace, among others, sumatran orangutan, long-tailed monkeys, kedih, turtles, squirrels and hornbills.
