Abstract

This paper proves that the ideological construction of an interpretation will determine the tendency of a product of interpretation and has the potential to reduce the meaning of a text and even reject other interpretations. The product of such interpretation is only more concerned with the process of elaborating verses for certain interests by designing themes and sub-themes as well as tendentious conclusions and even blaming "infidel" Muslims who are not in line, intolerant of differences of opinion, partial and fanatical which are full of radical ideologies. The findings in this article prove that the construction of Rokhmat S. Labib's interpretation is more of a process of elaborating verses for certain interests by designing themes and sub-themes with tendentious conclusions and even blaming "infidels" Muslims who are impartial, intolerant of differences, partial and fanatical. . The interpretation is often separated from the context of the verse, which causes this work to be inconsistent in taking references even though it does not ignore the historical context of the verse. This article also proves that the author's background determines ideological tendencies and interests in an interpretation.

Abstract

This study aims to prove that Islamic philosophy can present alternatives to overcome intolerance, radicalism, and extremism in Indonesia. This suggests that the teaching of Islamic philosophy in the country has succeeded in changing student perspective and mindset which tends to be closed-minded, exclusive, and extreme in nature in seeing differences in religions, sects, and beliefs to be open-minded, inclusive and moderate. With rational, critical and comprehensive teachings, students and alumni from the Islamic Theology and Philosophy (ITP) study programs have a more positive attitude in understanding plurality and diversity. Such change in mindset and attitude results from a curriculum design which offers moderate values, critical-dialectical teaching methods, and direct experiences in diversity. This study uses field research with qualitative technique and applies purposive sampling with snowballing technique to decide the study subjects. To collect the primary data, the data collecting-instruments include in-depth interviews with 28 resource persons comprising of lecturers, students and alumni in 5 ITP study programs in Indonesia, field observation and literature.

Abstract

This article examines the views of Sahl al-Tustarī on the Qur’an. As the first Sufi Mufasir who write a Sufi commentary of the Qur’an, al-Tustarī has laid down the principles of Sufistic interpretation of the Qur’an. This research is a library study that its data is based on written sources. The main source of this research is Tafsīr al-Qur’an al-’Aẓīm by Sahl al-Tustarī. The research approach used is a structural approach initiated by Robert Scholes with an interpretive and comparative framework. This paper shows that among al-Tustarī’s views on the Qur’an which are important and the basis for his Sufistic interpretation is that the Qur’an is an Arabic holy book and has four levels of meaning; ẓāhir, bāṭin. ḥadd and maṭla’.

Abstract

This article discusses the ideology of Sayyid Qutb and how this ideology has influenced his approach to the Qur’an. Although, in the beginning of his life he saw the Qur’an as the literary text and hence the literary approach to the Qur’an is the preferred approach, in his later life – when he became Islamist – he revised this approach and treat the Qur’an as a political document. Because of this political interpretation of the Qur’an, his tafsir Fi Zilal al-Qur’an has influenced many radical groups in Egypt and other countries. The primary sources of this article are Sayyid Qutb’s works, especially al-Taswir al-Fanni fi alQur’an, Masyahid al-Qiyamah fi al-Qur’an, and Fi Zilal al-Qur’an. These works are read chronologically and historically to see the development of Qutb’s thought and the shifting of his ideology. Thus, the knowledge of the social-historical and political context of Egypt is important to determine its influence to Qutb and vice versa. Finally, this article concludes that Qutb’s literary approach to the Qur’an has been transformed into ideological and political approach. This shifting is due to the changing of Sayyid’s Qutb worldview, from a secular Muslim to be an ideological one. Furthermore, at the end of his life, he became a theoretical ideological Islamist.

Abstract

This article attempts to examine M. Dawam Rahardjoʾs interpretation through his two works, Ensiklopedi al-Qurʾan: Tafsir Sosial Berdasarkan Konsep-konsep Kunci (The Encyclopedia of the Qurʾan: Social Interpretation Based on Key Concepts) and Paradigma al-Qurʾan: Metodologi Tafsir & Kritik Sosial (Paradigm of the Qurʾan: Methodology of Interpretation and Social Critique). In the treasures of Indonesian commentary literature, the two works of Rahardjo were unique, new and different at the time they appeared. The presentation in encyclopedic form and discussions that raise social issues make these work one of the pioneers of social-thematic interpretation. By using a descriptive-analytical method and a historical approach, this article attempts to trace and examine the ideas of interpretation in the two works hermeneutically to see how Rahardjo reads the Qurʾan in responding the social problems in society. The results of this study show at least three things: first, that Rahardjo’s interpretation from the beginning was directed to respond to ongoing social issues of his time; second, Rahardjo’s thinking was classified as progressive in his time because he attempts to solve social problems by integrating thematic interpretation with social science approach that he masters; third, his hermeneutical reading of the Qurʾan allows his interpretation to be relevant to the problems that exist in society.

Abstract

This article discusses an alternative perspective in understanding the content of the Qur’an i.e., the perspective of minority Muslim scholars. The object of this study is the thought of tafsir Abdullah Saeed and Farid Esack who are positioned as Muslim scholars of Western institutions living as a minority, how their views of the Qur’an and how they develop interpretive methodologies according to the context of the environment in which they live. This article shows that the construction of the thought of Abdullah Saeed and Farid Esack positioned as minority scholars can represent its own contemporary model of interpretation. Abdullah Saeed with the idea of contextual interpretation laid out three bases of interpretive methodology: hierarchical values, contextual meaning, and systematic contextual interpretation. The three bases of the methodology are used to see the extent to which verses on ethical law can be understood and practiced in contemporary contexts while remaining grounded in the substance of the values carried when they are derived. While Farid Esack with his idea of liberative exegesis tried to break conservatism in South Africa with three methodological foundations: progressive revelation, reception hermeneutics, and the liberation theology of the Qur’an. The foundation of this methodology was used as a basis for value and legitimacy in supporting the agenda of popular solidarity between Muslims and non-Muslims in South Africa to overthrow the apartheid regime.

Abstract

The present paper is a study of Tabyin al-Kalām, especially in relation to the notion of taḥrīf. Some scholars, like Bruce B. Lawrence, believe that Ahmad Khar’s thought was not original, and depended heavily on al-Tafsīr al-Kabir of Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī (d. 1209). In order to assess this assumption, the paper will also compare Tabyin al-Kalām with al-Tafsīr al-Kabir.
Reassessing the Originality of Tarjumān al-Mustafīd: Dāūd al-Rūmī’s Contributions and the Scholarly Significance of the First Tafsīr in The Archipelago Amin, Muhammad; Rahman, Yusuf; Zulkifli

Abstract

Peter Riddell and Salman Harun have conducted studies on the originality of Tafsīr Tarjumān al-Mustafīd. However, their study was based on a limited sample (the 16th and 30th juz), which resulted in the omission of several significant aspects. This study seeks to broaden the scope of research by employing a more comprehensive methodological approach, specifically textual criticism and comparative analysis. Textual criticism is used to assess the authenticity of the text, identify its primary reference sources, and evaluate the interpolations found within the work. Additionally, this study employs comparative analysis by juxtaposing Tarjumān al-Mustafīd with notable classical commentaries, including al-Jalālain, al-Baiḍāwī, and al-Khāzin. Furthermore, an analysis of colophons and variations in writing style is conducted to elucidate the role of each contributor. This study presents three key findings. First, both Riddell and Harun concur that this work is not a translation of al-Baiḍāwī but instead of al-Jalālain. This study aligns with Harun’s assertion that Tarjumān al-Mustafīd is an orally transmitted translation of al-Jalālain, supplemented with quotations from al-Khāzin and additional interpolations, particularly in the 29th and 30th juz, which were primarily influenced by Dāūd al-Rūmī. Secondly, this study reveals that Dāūd al-Rūmī played a crucial role in the preservation and textual modifications of the work, despite its attribution to ʿAbd al-Raʾūf. Third, the scholarly significance of Tarjumān al-Mustafīd  is demonstrated through its role as the first tafsīr in the archipelago to document diverse qirā’āt traditions, reflect the vernacularization of Malay culture, and serve as a vital Qur'ānic guide for the general Muslim populace in 17th-century Aceh.
