Abstract

This paper discusses the passion of Islamization of the New Order, at the same time the mainstream of this power is based on economic development that provides opportunities for the growth of the Muslim middle class. Patronage model used by the New Order gives an indication that the power built by this regime wants to instill a strong influence in society.  At the same time, the New Order is depoliticizing the political attitudes of Muslims. This has implications for the marginalization of the interests of Muslims on the national stage. In this study will also be affirmed the influence of the New Order's power on the presence of the Muslim middle class. On the one hand their birth was the result of the economic development that the New Order echoed. On a different aspect, the presence of the middle class gives strong legitimacy that they are part of the dominating class structure in a country. Also will be reviewed about middle-class interference with the trend of Islamic populism that actually occurred in the era of the 80s, but re-spread after post-reform. Popular Islamic culture becomes a trend that spread through various media such as, internet, magazines, newspapers and so forth. This has received considerable response from middle-class Muslims and led to commodification. Religion facilitates to interact with modernity. Materialistic and hedonistic interests intersect with obedience in the practice of religion. On the one hand, the mode of consumption of the Muslim middle class changes with the adaptation of piety values in the public sphere.

Abstract

The Pathok Negara Mosque has an important meaning in determining the boundaries of the Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat Sultanate as a dependent state. After the Giyanti Agreement, the Mataram Kingdom in Java was divided into two regions, namely the Surakarta Sunanate and the Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat Sultanate. As the first Sultan, Sultan Hamengkubuwana I began to build the Keraton as the center of government (Nagari Ngayogyakarta) and borders with the Great State (Negaragung) by building the Pathok Negara Mosque in the four corners. This study examines the meaning of Masjid Pathok Negara as a defense system for a new kingdom at that time. The research method is qualitative by looking directly at each Pathok Negara Mosque, analyzing, redrawing, reviewing data and then interpreting according to the relevant theory. The results obtained show that the meaning of the Pathok Negara Mosque as a state spirituality system is shown from the main function of the mosque as a center for spiritual and cultural development, the concept of kiblat papat limo pancer as a macro-microcosmos concept. The existence of physical forms and spaces in the mosque and the area around the Pathok Negara Mosque is an embodiment of values to maintain the spiritual community from that time until now.

Abstract

The prevalence of urban spiritualism is on the rise among residents of major cities. One observable manifestation of urban spiritualism is the growing number ofdiverse social recitation gatherings. The present research looks into four distinctprofiles of assemblies that have emerged in the urban areas of Yogyakarta andSurakarta. The four assemblies comprise Muslim United and Teras Dakwah. InSurakarta, it is worth noting the presence of two prominent organisations, namelyMajelis Ar-Raudhah, established by Habib Novel Alaydrus, and Majelis BusytanulAsyiqin, founded by Habib Syech Assegaf. This study elucidates the techniquesemployed by the aforementioned four assemblies to disseminate moderatereligious knowledge within urban circles, as well as their respective reactions tothe evolving spiritual dynamics observed within urban communities. The presentstudy employs a qualitative methodology, specifically a field study approach. Thefindings of this study suggest a shift in the dominance of religious authority amongrenowned ustadz and habaib figures. By endorsing the dissemination of widelyrecognised da’wah conducted by these prominent individuals, it contributesto the enhancement of religious literacy among urban populations. The studyfindings also interpret the santrinisation and piety activities observed in urbancommunities as a tangible expression of the veracity of religious teachings.

Abstract

This study examines how sound and community are essential for understanding the Qur'an in Javanese Muslim settings, where recitation is essential. It investigates how Qur'anic soundscapes serve as a form of contextual tafsīr during communal rituals. The research was conducted in Yogyakarta, Kudus, and Surabaya from February to June 2025. This study employs participant observation and informal interviews to examine Qur'anic recitation within communal gatherings, including pengajian wetonan, tahlilan, and slametan. The findings show that sound serves as an embodied hermeneutics, influenced by emotional resonance and Javanese values such as rukun (harmony) and unggah-ungguh (respect). Kyais and pesantren communities are key in mediating these interpretations. This work contributes to contextual Qur'anic studies by framing listening as a mode of exegesis that encompasses sonic, affective, and communal dimensions of Javanese Islam.
