Abstract

To speak fluently in the target language, English, has remained a challenge for learners, particularly those who are non-native speakers of English. When speaking, therefore, learners should be aware of speech disfluencies. This paper, accordingly, investigates the speech disfluencies of non-native speakers in their presentations. Data were collected from TED Talk scripts and were then analysed and discussed, based on categories of disfluency. The findings of this document analysis reveal five types of disfluency in the data, namely unfilled pause, filled pause, repetition, deletion, and substitution. It is expected that learners of English at university level can benefit from the study results concerning speech disfluencies to improve their speaking proficiency.     Keywords: Disfluency; filled pause; non-native speaker; TED talk

Abstract

The use of suffixes in the English language shows various functions, and one of them is endearment that happens especially in common first names or the way one addresses other people. This study aims to analyze the use of the suffix –ie and -y and to show endearment, especially in common first names and other possible words that also indicate endearment. This is a qualitative study that uses document analysis. The main data came from a list of common names as seen in Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary 7th edition. Some additional data are also included, which are common names that are not listed in the dictionary. An additional observation was done to find adjectives-turn-nouns that are modified using suffixes -ie and -y that causes their category change. The research result shows that most of the nicknames usually come from either the first syllable of the name or the second or third syllable, and then those are modified using the suffix to create nicknames.

Abstract

This paper explored the types of collocations used in an English textbook entitled Bahasa Inggris (SMA/MA/SMK/MAK, Kelas X, Semester 1). The primary source of data was the textbook, entitled Bahasa Inggris, which was published by the Indonesian government for the first-year or class 10 students of senior high schools (SMA/MA/SMK/MAK). This study was a corpus analysis. The researchers utilized AntCont 3.5.8 to extract and discover the required data and then explored the types of collocations used in the Bahasa Inggris textbook. The results showed that the textbook comprised of Grammatical G1 (1807), Grammatical G3 (178), Grammatical G4 (1770), Grammatical G5 (1), Lexical L1 (594), Lexical L3 (125), Lexical L5 (21), and Lexical L6 (1). Grammatical G1 collocation was the most frequent type in the textbook. The results indicated that it would be beneficial for English teachers to provide collocation materials for the students to accommodate their writing and speaking skills.

Abstract

Writing the background is obligatory in undergraduate theses, and discourse markers are essential to creating cohesion and coherence in academic writing. Thus, this paper aimed to investigate discourse markers used by the undergraduate students in writing their thesis backgrounds and the extent of accuracy of the use of DMs in the students’ thesis backgrounds. Data were collected from 28 undergraduate thesis backgrounds written by the students of the English Language Education Study Program of Sanata Dharma University, Yogyakarta batch 2016, who graduated between May 2020 and January 2021. Descriptive research was employed, and the data were examined using document analysis. Results showed that elaborative markers were used 763 times (74.58%) and followed by reason markers 95 times (9.29%), inferential markers 85 times (8.31%), and contrastive markers 80 times (7.82%). In general, the EFL students used DMs accurately in their thesis backgrounds. Some DMs were, however, used inappropriately. It is essential that the EFL students better understand how to use DMs appropriately when writing their thesis backgrounds.

Abstract

This research investigates the conversations in the “Dilbert” comic written by Scott Adams. The data came from the dialogues in the comic “Dilbert.” They were analyzed using Gricean Maxims of Conversations. This qualitative study used content analysis as the data of this research is text. This research aimed to analyze the maxims that were violated in this comic to create humor and the reason why the characters were violating the maxims during conversations. Fifteen comic strips from the website dilbert.com were chosen and analyzed. The results show that the characters mostly violate maxims of relevance since they need to come up with an excuse for the given questions or avoid accusation. They also violate the maxim of quality as they sometimes lie too in order to get out of the situation or accusation.

Abstract

Parents are the first ones responsible for their children’s speech. Bad and good children’s speech behavior in society would be considered the results of their parents’ teachings. This research was conducted to analyze this phenomenon by exploring the positive politeness used by parents while communicating in front of their children. It showed how parents construct their speech to exemplify good speech behavior to their children. This research used qualitative research, specified to content analysis method to analyze the data. The data were collected from the video entitled “Peppa Pig Official Channel, Peppa Pig Adds Pineapple in Her Pizza” from Peppa Pig Official YouTube Channel. The results showed that the most strategy used was the ‘include both speakers and hearers in the activity’ which appeared in 36 out of 319 utterances. It showed Daddy Pig’s and Mommy Pig’s efforts to promote the politeness of appreciating others’ existence through their speech to their children. Furthermore, all the positive politeness strategies were used by Daddy Pig and Mommy Pig as the parents in Peppa Pig Video. Therefore, this video was recommended for parents to see how they can construct their language politely while speaking with their children. It will help children to get used to speaking politely and appropriately.

Abstract

Learners’ dictionaries are often intended to assist students with distinct proficiency levels. However, few studies have shown how dictionaries with different intended users were compared. This paper aimed to compare and contrast adjective clauses in -er suffix occupation definitions in two online dictionaries. Data, consisting of 33 occupation words with the suffix -er, such as ‘barber’ and ‘waiter’, were collected from the online Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English (LDOCE) and the online Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary (OALD) using purposive sampling. The data were analysed using syntactic analysis, focusing on the components of adjective clauses. The results showed the head noun of the adjective clauses differed; LDOCE used pronouns most frequently (80.6%), while OALD used noun phrases only (100%). The relative pronoun ‘who’ was used more frequently in LDOCE (48.4%) and ‘whose’ in OALD (62.5%). Transitive verbs were used the most in LDOCE (48.4%), but in OALD, it was linking verbs (57.9%). The additional information that affected the length of the adjective clauses was longer in OALD compared to LDOCE. The study results provide pedagogical implications for English learning-teaching by utilizing online dictionaries. English teachers and learners are encouraged to integrate dictionaries into the learning-teaching activities.

Abstract

The ability to use discourse markers (DMs) to create cohesion and coherence of a text is essential for EFL learners at the university level to express ideas and thoughts in various types of writing assignments, such as academic papers and reflections. Hence, this study attempted to shed more light on the use of DMs in academic and non-academic writings of Thai EFL learners. The main objective was to investigate the types, overall frequency, and differences, and similarities of discourse markers in both styles of writing. Sixty essays, consisting of 20 academic essays and 40 non-academic ones, were selected as the primary data. Academic essays were selected from the Critical Reading and Writing course of Xavier Learning Community (XLC), Thailand, while the non-academic ones were selected from the XLC English Newsletter. The data were analyzed based on Fraser’s taxonomy (2009). The results showed that 2.521 DMs distributed in five types, namely contrastive discourse, elaborative discourse, inferential discourse, temporal discourse, and spoken discourse markers, were identified in the 20 academic and 40 non-academic essays.  The most frequently used DM was elaborative discourse markers (EDM), F=1,703. This study concluded that raising awareness of DMs would assist Thai EFL learners in producing an effective and coherent piece of writing.

Abstract

The study aimed to identify the types of similes of woman and man in the Bible book, Song of Songs, and their underlying principal metaphor. While the Songs of Songs’ figurative language is commonly analyzed through the lens of historical and pure literary approaches, the authors analyzed it using the cognitive linguistics framework. Qualitative content analysis was employed as the method. The findings showed that the similes of the woman (35) outnumbered similes of the man (12), and they grouped into 7 types, namely Architectural, Artefactual, Botanical, Celestial, Comestible, Topographic, and Zoomorphic. The similes are mostly zoomorphic (13) and botanical (12). The similes represented the woman mainly as A Protected City, while the man as A City Protector. It was argued that the underlying metaphor of all similes of woman and man in the Song of Songs is Love Is Protection. The findings may contribute as an alternative way of reading and understanding figurative language in the Song of Songs.

Abstract

Abstract. Ecolinguistics may be one of the newest branches of linguistics. However, it has an important role in the educational field. Through ecolinguistics, students can possess both linguistics and ecological knowledge at the same time. Moreover, the case of environmental issues was getting higher day by day, Thus, it is important to put ecolinguistics representation through the contents of textbooks.  This qualitative research aimed to investigate the portrayal of ecolinguistics aspects in several Indonesian English textbooks. The purpose of this study is to analyze, whether Indonesian English textbooks use ecolinguistic aspects in their topics, words, or sentences or not. Five Indonesian English textbooks published by the Indonesian government were used as data sources. To gather the data, a corpus application, AntCont, was used. The descriptive qualitative approach and corpus approach were used in this study to analyze the contents of the English textbooks. The findings of the study indicated that not all Indonesian English textbooks represented ecolinguistics aspects in their topics, words, and sentences. Only three English textbooks from the total of five English textbooks portrayed ecolinguistic aspects in their contents. It is expected that the study results would improve the global understanding related to the environment and ecolinguistic topics, particularly through English textbooks for students. Keywords: Ecolinguistic topic, ecology, English textbook, EFL, ELT
