This discourse study examines the rhetorical structures of RA introductions in Sinta 1 indexed ELT journals by implementing the Swales’ (2004) CARS model as the framework for analysis. A corpus consisting of 36 RA introductions was randomly collected from three SINTA 1 indexed journals, namely TEFLIN, SiELE, and IJAL, in 2019-2021. The analysis was done by using top-down analysis. The findings of the study indicated that all three moves, i.e., Move 1 Establishing a territory, Move 2 Establishing a niche, and Move 3 Presenting the present work, appeared in the introduction section across three journals. Although not all authors presented the moves and steps in appropriate sequences, the structures of moves and steps found in the corpus data were based on Swales’ CARS model. It is highly suggested that EFL students follow the Swales’ CARS model in writing an introduction.

In advertising, one of the purposes of communication is to offer a particular product. Advertisements display the advantages, features, and values of the products. This paper aimed to analyse the language styles used in online Vogue Magazine fashion advertisements. The data were collected by selecting ten advertisements collected from Vogue Magazine’s compilation entitled “The Fall 2020 Trends Vogue Edition Editors are Shopping This Season” published on 18 September 2020. The researchers employed mixed methods to analyse the language styles used in the fashion advertisements based on nine types of language styles proposed by Wells, Burnett, and Moriarty (1995). The results showed that there were three language styles found from ten online fashion advertisements in Vogue Magazine advertisements, namely the hard sell style (three times), soft sell style (three times), and mixed style or the combination of the hard sell and soft sell styles (four times). Each advertisement style has its specific features and functions in fashion promotion.

Conversation, as a complex activity, requires some set of rules to be guided and worked cooperatively. However, violating the rules to create implications in some situations is a powerful and creative way to get across a point. This study attempts to discover the most dominant maxim violation in a Javanese song entitled Slénco by applying a qualitative approach. The data source is taken from the Internet in the form of dialogue manifested via musical communication, which violated Cooperative Principles of Maxims. To conduct this study, three steps were taken: Copying the song lyrics and translating them into English; categorizing them into different types of maxims violation; analysing them based on the violation of each maxim; and then concluded the reasons why the lyricists violated the Cooperative Principle of maxims in their utterances. The findings of the study showed that all types of maxims were violated: eight utterances on the maxim of quantity, three utterances on the maxim of quality, 11 utterances on the maxim of relations, and eight utterances on the maxim of manners. These violations of maxims portray the reality of dyslexia sufferers who are problematic in conversational exchanges and make the lyrics sound funny as a form of art in indirect communications.

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic caused the teaching-learning process to be done online. The online learning environment required EFL teachers to increase their technology use, including teaching literature classes. This influenced the teachers’ technology use in the long run, especially in post-pandemic teaching. To the best of researchers’ knowledge, only a few studied teachers’ perceptions of their technology use in EFL teaching and the post-pandemic era, especially for teaching literature. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate EFL teachers’ perceptions of their technology use for teaching literature and the technology use for teaching literature in the post-pandemic era. This study used a narrative inquiry design and a semi-structured interview to gather data from six senior high school teachers and analyzed using thematic analysis. The results showed that teachers had challenges in using technology for teaching literature at first because of low experience, but they had positive views on their current technology use for teaching literature, had positive perceptions on hybrid learning, and perceived that they had to make more adjustments for teaching literature in the post-pandemic era. This study may help teachers reflect on their technology use and adjust their technology use in online learning to meet the needs of the teachers and students.

The development of language affects speech cultures and modes of communication. Politer terms were created to avoid misunderstanding. This phenomenon is called euphemism. Employing euphemisms while discussing sensitive topics can help people express their ideas politely. This present study aims to determine the types of euphemism used in a famous television series entitled Bridgerton. The research was conducted only on the first episode of the series. This qualitative research employed content analysis as the research methodology. The research findings showed six types of euphemism identified, namely substitution, litotes, metonym, hyperbole, synecdoche, and colour-based metaphor for x-phemism. Nevertheless, this research was only analyzing the first episode of the series. Hence, the results might have differed in other episodes. Future researchers who are interested in the same topic may find other types of euphemisms that this research cannot cover.

Understanding illocutionary acts in English can be challenging for EFL students. To understand illocutionary acts, EFL students can see how native speakers express utterances in their speech and understand the context that constructs the basis for using the illocutionary act. This study explored the types and contexts of utterances in the movie Raya and the Last Dragon. Data, consisting of 31 utterances, were collected from the movie transcript and analyzed using content analysis to classify illocutionary act types and contextual utterances. Results showed the movie characters usall five illocutionary acts, and the most dominant illocutionary act was the assertive type, which occurred 13 times. The context underlined the characters expressing illocutionary acts was the place, the interlocutor, the purpose of the conversation, the use of words, and the tone. This film type of verbal communication without text was direct speech or dialogue. This study offers relevant knowledge and benefits to EFL learners and teachers in the learning-teaching processes, such as creating familiarity with complex meanings in English to avoid misinterpretation, developing their consciousness of English utterances, and growing their capability to execute the speech act flawlessly.

Many English words were formed through word-formation processes that can be found in English literary works, such as novels and short stories. One of the examples is the short story There Will Come to Soft Rains written by Ray Bradbury. Therefore, the researchers aimed to investigate the word-formation processes in the short story in order to answer a research question, namely: What word-formation processes occur in the story of There Will Come Soft Rains by Ray Bradbury? This research was conducted by using document analysis since it used a short story as the source of data. The results showed that 4 lexical items formed through cliticization, 22 lexical items through compounding, and 44 lexical items through derivation. With 44 instances, derivation, forming words by adding affixes, particularly prefixes and suffixes, was the most frequent word-formation process used in the short story.

This study investigates English Master’s Program students in producing suprasegmental features, namely word stress. The focus is on analysing disyllabic noun-verb words in six video presentations and what are the factors that affect word stress errors from 19 English master program students. The data were obtained from transcribing the videos and selecting the disyllabic noun-verb words from the transcriptions. Furthermore, a questionnaire was used to gather information about students’ background knowledge in learning English, especially linguistics. Qualitative content analysis was employed in this study. From those videos, there were 1,089 disyllabic noun-verb words produced by the students. The stress errors made were 15 words. The stress errors mostly occurred in the first syllable and no word stress. The findings showed the factors that affected the wordstress errors were students’ native language, Bahasa Indonesia. Bahasa Indonesia did nothave word-stress to differ a meaning, only for emphasis. The questionnaire showed that all students were Indonesian and only two of them used English as their native language. The background knowledge and gender had some effects on stress errors, but not vital. The results indicated that students needed to have a deeper understanding of word stress.

Nowadays, being bilinguals when communicating with others is something familiar. Many factors can influence people to be bilinguals at the same time. By being bilinguals, people are urged to do code-switching. This study aims to answer the questions of what types of code-switching are used by the main character of Emily in Paris series and the functions of code-switching that are found in the Emily in Paris series. This study used a qualitative method and the data were collected from the script of episode 1 till episode 10 of Emily in Paris series. The results of the research showed that there were 3 types of code-switching that are used by Emily in Emily in Paris, such as inter-sentential switching, intra-sentential switching, and tag switching. Furthermore, the functions of code-switching that are usually used by Emily were 6, namely reiteration, quotation, addressee specification, interjection, message qualification, and personalization versus objectification.

Indonesia is a diverse country consisting of various cultures and also religions. Currently, there are six official religions recognized by the Indonesian government, which are Islam, Protestant, Catholic, Hindu, Buddhi, and Confucianism. Thus, it is important for English book writers to design an English textbook that not only accommodates the needs of the students but also contains learning content which are representing all those varied religions and cultures in order to represent the background of the students. This study focuses on the portrayal of religious content found in the six Indonesian English textbooks published by the government and private sector. The purpose of the study is to assess, whether the six Indonesian English textbooks fairly distribute religious content through the textbooks’ visual illustrations or not. Visual content analysis was used as the methodology of the study to answer the research question. Based on the findings of the study, it was revealed that all the six Indonesian textbooks did not fairly distribute the religious contents. Some religions were having little to no representation in the textbooks. The religions portrayed throughout the contents were Islam, Protestantism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Confucianism.
